Sorry for the delay. I stayed at Konacopia Farm in Captain Cook on the Big Island. The owners, Steve and Sahdna were really great people and the work was a fair trade for stay. Tons of fruit on the land and great snorkeling near by. I did not visit any raw communities there but there was a cool place near the farm called Paleaku Gardens where they had all of these spiritually based gardens. It was a great place to go meditate.

I am not in Hawai'i. I have spent time on the big island, Maui and Kauai.
Wwoof is an organization that helps you find organic farms that are accepting volunteers. The farms/gardens provide food and a place to sleep in exchange for your help. It is a great way to travel and make friends and learn about gardening.
I wwoofed on the big island and it was wonderful!
