About Me:
My typical daily intake: oranges, bananas, peaches, a kale-spinach-romaine lettuce smoothie with agave nectar, maybe an Organic Raw Bar (though I try to stay away from grains, even sprouted grains, and this bar lists grains in its ingredients). Today I ate a pear-watermelon-cinnamon powder smoothie. It tasted OK.

My journey to raw veganism: grew up eating S.A.D., since I was a teenager made multiple attempts to switch to vegetarianism, finally discovered raw veganism in January 2007, experienced intense detox and weight loss, then fell off the wagon in summer 2007, finally got back on the raw vegan wagon in April 2008, have been cruising to better and better health ever since. I feel great!

Currently I am trying to be an ~80% raw, live food vegan on "glycolysis" (meaning my body runs on glucose/sugar because I eat so much sweet fruit) during the spring/summer and in the winter an ~70% raw, live food vegan on "ketosis" (meaning I try to stay away from sugary foods and just eat mostly non-sweet vegetables, cooked and/or raw, and some legumes/beans like lentils so my body will run on body fat not sugar). I read in David Wolfe's "Eating for Beauty" that beans/legumes are bad and not meant for human consumption, so I don't eat them in the spring/summer, but I do eat lentils in the winter. If you have any advice for me on how I can kick this winter-lentils habit (which I think is an emotional addiction), I would really like you to share it with me.

This describes my dietary intake in a nutshell: 100% vegan all the time, 70-90% of which is raw vegan (if I go to a restaurant with friends I will order salad with no dressing, sometimes a cooked veggie side dish like steamed broccoli, what else can I do? What do you do? Hmmm.).

I must disclose that I do take supplements. I take Vitamin B12 as a skin patch once a week and a Vitamin B12 under tongue mouth spray a couple times a week. I read that the B12 pill is not absorbed much by the body but these skin and mouth absorption methods are hundreds of times more effective. Because of the depletion of our soil and contamination of our waters, we no longer get enough B12 from foods grown in our soil, from our drinking water, etc. So I believe I will take a B12 supplement in some form for the rest of my life.

I am currently taking an vegan source (algae) of omega 3/EPA/DHA in capsule form. I am told that people who have been vegetarian all their lives do not have omega 3/EPA/DHA deficiencies, so they do not need supplements, but for the majority of my life, I ate the S.A.D. diet, which is very high in omega 6 EFA, so I think I may be deficient in omega 3/EPA/DHA. My plan is to take this vegan omega 3/EPA/DHA supplement for at least six months to a year to address my perceived deficiency, and then try to go without it. Why? Because I read in Douglas Graham's 80/10/10 book that algae is very acidic, and my goal is to be more alkaline. If I feel like I need it again, then I will start taking it again. I also grind flax seeds (more omega 3) and put them in my berry + almond milk smoothie every morning.

I take MSM powder, which I got from David Wolfe's Sunfood Nutrition site. I read in his book that we used to get this MSM from natural rainfall water, but because of pollution, we no longer do.

And finally, I take a vegan liquid mineral supplement that comes from a plant source called "humic shale." I think many people who were or still are on S.A.D. are mineral deficient, and also the fruits and veggies I get from my local grocery store, even though they are "organic," are just not grown in mineral-rich soil like back in the day, so to get my minerals, I take this liquid mineral drink almost every day.

As a conversation starter, I am very much interested in any information people out there have about how vegans should tackle the issues of deficiencies in Vitamin B12 and the omega 3 EFAs/EPA/DHA. Thoughts?

Hi Audrey, welcome and thanks for sharing so much of your journey!
I'd love to talk to you about your lentil "addiction" and find out the true root cause. I'm leaving for Raw and Living Spirit Fest on Friday...can you please contact me in late Sept (I'll also be at Tree of Life for a couple of weeks).

B12..I recommend the liquid form from Natural Zing which is somewhat local to you in Mt. Airy, MD. Their MSM powder also rocks!

For trace minerals and when I think I need balance, I like VitaMineral Green (also available at Zing).

re: flax....I hope you are soaking overnight and then grinding so that it breaks up and is gooey before adding to you shakes. Otherwise they are just passing through and you won't get the omega-3s. Another great source of omega-3 is purslane. You see it in sidewalk cracks and everywhere! If you can find some in a clean location (hasn't been fertilized or pesticided) dig it up, transplant, water and watch it grow! It's a weed, so will grow easily and even in a pot or window-box. Cut some and throw it in the blender--stem and all.

hugs and greens,
Sharon
