About Me:
My name is Stephanie (everyone just calls me Steph) and I am married with 2 beautiful children and 1 sweet angel in heaven. I have an active 5yr old diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (Sometimes called PPD, Sensory Integration dysfunctions or one of many other name variations falling under the same spectrum each person with it being a unique individual with no two having quite the same symptoms or behaviors.). I was blessed to have had him come into my life when he was still a toddler and we are blessed to be his parents. It has been a long, sometimes difficult but welcomed road and I am determined to continue learning about living with autism and sharing my knowledge and experience about it with others. He has come such a long way, he is the apple of my eye and I couldn't love him more if he were biologically my own. I also have a daughter that turned a year in Nov 2006. She is just a doll. She is headstrong, determined and I have no doubts about her; accomplishing whatever it is she choses to do in life. She already thinks the world revolves around her so what can I say. LOL! With one look of those big blue eyes, red hair; and sweet smile she can melt your heart and steal it away forever.

I was born and raised in South Louisiana. Yes, I have an accent and no people from here do not sound like something from the water boy, yes we wear shoes and no we don't travel from one place to the other in boats. I have been a licensed cosmetologist for almost 15 years now. Though I love the work and artistry involved, I hate working in salons and avoid them like the plague. Catty behavior and drama that seem to consume the industry just aren't me, so for the time being I am enjoying being a stay at home mom. I am looking into going back to school. Although, I am still juggling what area I should pursue. My dream way back when was to go to medical school but as it happens with dreams many times than not life gets in the way and we move on to other things that fit the path it has taken. Raising a child with autism has actually re sparked that desire to go back to school. Anyway, I keep juggling the idea of going back for nursing (with intentions of seeking NP over time), sonography, respiratory care, or something else along that line. I have mainly been spending my time researching the different areas and checking out information on schools in my area before taking the leap. At the moment, sonography is in the lead because of the classroom hours that fit my mommy schedule. I am not sure when or if that will happen (hopefully within the next few months) I am leaving it in God's hands until he directs me to which door I should take and when.

A bit more about my raw journey

Over the years I have bounced back a fourth between SAD, vegetarian, preparing clean foods, now I am very happy at 85-95% raw vegan. I am by no means a radical vegan, I am in the process of changing my diet to achieve overall better health and I like how eating this way makes me feel. And, it is a heck of a lot easier to clean up after "cooking" as well. It is easier to rinse a few utensils than scrub a sink full of greasy mess. Haha!!Though at this point I can't see myself going 100% raw just yet with a family of 4 and one having food texture sensitivity due to sensory processing issues that take a bit more creativity in preparing healthy meals the he can swallow.

I started my raw journey at the beginning of 2008. But before I get too much into that let me fill you in on what brought me here. As I stated before I have always tried to eat somewhat healthy. Though I do have a bit of a sweet tooth that I have to try to control the best I can. I tend to be a stress eater. Anyway, I gained quite a bit of weight after having my daughter in '05. Pregnancy wise I managed to gain only 20lbs within the last 2 months which stayed pretty much under control while I breastfed her for the first 5 months. She self-weened at 6 months after contracting a very bad case of strep throat. After she stopped breast feeding I started to gain a bit, which I hear is common for some women after ceasing BF. For the next few months I did pretty well eating healthy, exercising regularly, etc etc. I had managed to actually lose approximately 50 pounds in 6 months and was still losing.

This leads me up to March '07 when I found out I was pregnant again. With this pregnancy I started gaining weight very rapidly, extreme morning sickness and fatigue. I eventually starting having problems with the pregnancy (which I will not get completely into since it is still very difficult for me to talk about) and coupled with added anxiety from dealing with extended family issues I eventually went into premature labor and lost her after an abruption on July 23. We were blessed to have her with us for 3 hours before she left us to be with the lord but losing my sweet little angel, Paislea Skye, has left a mark on me forever.

About a month after losing her I was put on prescription medications for PPD, Anxiety, Depression and severe insomnia resulting from my loss. One of the medications I was put on has a bad side effect of weight gain which has since been reported to cause permanant changes in metabolism in some people. It was during this time that I discovered Raw and began my journey.

I really like the way my body feels eating raw and I can defiantly tell a difference when it comes to digestion. Unfortunately, even with eating primarily raw, I am still battling the side effects of the medication. So, in mid January I began to wean myself off of the medication and am working towards getting back my health and diving deeper into the raw lifestyle. (As of February 1st, I am completely off said medication so I hope to start seeing a change for the better as it fully leaves my system.)

At times it is difficult trying to come up with creative meal ideas for a family of 4. My husband and 2 yr old daughter enjoy eating raw as well but our 5yr old with autism has sensory issues that make it difficult to find foods he can actually swallow. So I find myself making multiple meals to satisfy everyone though green smoothies and raw spaghetti seem to be an overall family favorite.

Finally got one!

I know it has been quite some time since I have updated. things have been pretty hectic over the last several months and it has been difficult to find extra time to check in everywhere I roam online. Anyway, we finally got the opportunity to purchase a Vita-mix..hurray!! Dh had been giving me a hard time justifying spending so much for a blender. So rather than purchsing at the beginning of the year like i had planned on doing I didn't get to purchased one until this weekend thanks to Sams Club… Continue

Planting

I haven't been around too much lately because I have been a busy little bee the past couple of months. We found a bee keeper about a half mile from here that sells raw honey. That was quite a find, we had seen the beekeeper sign for years but never stopped in. After visiting a local organic farm to purchase some fresh kale we found out that this keeper sold raw honey so we stopped on the way home. I have to say it is the darkest richest tasting honey I have ever had. I was so impressed by his se… Continue

Starting a garden

I am so excited. Today we went to a plant show that is being held over the weekend. All sorts of local farmers, nursery's and individuals were set up selling and showing their plants, trees and ornamentals. We purchased several vegetable plants (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, several herbs etc.) We were also given a black walnut tree by the Arbor Day society who had a booth set up. As well as the kid each got a little plant of their own by a friendly vendor. I can't tell… Continue

A little update on what is going on with me and spouting off a few random thaughts

I haven't been posting much lately mainly because my raw journey has taken a stand still. My husband was hurt at work several weeks ago and we are having to live off of workmans comp until he is released to go back to work. We have no idea when that will be but it seems right this moment that this may be quite awhile. He has 2 herniated disks in his lower back; one of which is pressing against his spinal cord. So the doctors are going to be doing some epidurals on him to inject steriods and p…

Almond Milk

Yum yum! I just made my very first batch of almond milk. I have to say I am quite impressed because I didn't think the recipe would have made as much as it did. I wish I would have had some dates to sweeten it a bit, I am out at the moment, so I substituted Agave nectar figuring we would drink it really fast anyway. Next time I want to try it with a couple dates though to give a richer flavor.

My only complaint is I need to find a cheaper source for cheese cloth or some sort of reusabl… Continue

Hi Stephanie, My name is Louise and I am also from So. La. born and raised in New Orleans, but moved to St. Tammany Parish several years ago and love the country life; cleaner air, cleaner delicious well water, etc... I was touched by your profile and wish you and your family blessings. The images of your raw food journey inspired me. I recently became a raw/vegan. I love it and can't imagine going back to a SAD diet EVER. My health has improved so much that I want to shout it from the rooftops. I have a LOT of weight to lose and am still severely obese. I thought I was doomed until I started a raw food lifestyle. No one around this area has even heard of a raw foodist and think its crazy, even my dr.s are very concerned that it could harm me. I say, what do I have to lose? Do you come across as many uninformed people as I do? It is so sad.I guess all we can do is pray for our crawfish eating and beer guzzling friends in our area. Now I know I will be successful at becoming healthy. What a journey this has been. I had almost given up hope of ever being healthy. My life has been saved and I wish more people in our area could be turned on to the truth about their health. Instead of listening to their Dr.'s they should just start listening to their own bodies. Blessings to you and your family. Louise in Pearl River

Just mention, if you can think of a simple, home recipe for a citrus shampoo in a small batch, as a home experiment, I'd be so interested. The fruit I thought of is lime. I understand soap somewhat, and that is what I see here do spending hours and using the three soap oils, but I do not think I understand shampoo, unless that is a broader spectrum of approaches. Forgeting the bad shampoos-- all those cheap ones, yes. But an acceptable shampoo approach at home? I wonder if one batch. like a quart, could be done at home easily to try out.
Our water is soft, well water. Excellent for suds. The family has hair that tangles far too much, but could you think of a simple recipe?

Hi Stephanie, I have not yet seen your web page on soap yet, I have now read your profile-- the left side here. We have an angel in heaven, too. 1993. We have 11 children. Yes. We homeshcaool. We like walnuts, apples, and currants (rasions). We adopted a special-needs boy. We both have clinical experience or certifications. Layla is the sopamaker. We appreciate your voice concerning soap. You know so very much about it. Blessings to you from both of us...
