I went 100% raw almost a year ago. I was 250 pounds when I started and now I weigh 170. Even though I lost weight, I still want firm up and build muscle. I want my body to look like Anthony, The Raw Models body. Right now I do 200 crunches a day and 30 minutes of cardio on a rebounder which I love and I do a lot of walking and bike riding. I went to the gym today for the first time in a long while and got on some of the machines and did some bench presses. I was doing 120 pushups daily a few months into going raw but I had hand surgery so I can't do pushups anymore. Hopefully that will be resolved in the next 6 months. I can do most anything except pushups and yoga right now because I cant put my right hand flat on the floor. Do you have any tips on how to get lean and ripped? Perhaps additions or subtractions of certain foods? How do you work out?
A very light workout that I do and have done is with an exercise ball - I weighed 225, now weigh about 150-155 and you can't tell I lost the toddler at all. I lost the weight through nutrition and toned with simple exercise.
I have an exercise ball (2 is better, 3 or 4 is advanced) and just do a lot of stuff on it. Just sitting and balancing gives you core strength and really helps. The maximum resistance is you, so its hard to hurt yourself and you can get your muscles to burn and tone quite easily. I used to lift 3 hrs a day in the gym as a yute, but today understand I was doing more damage than good I think.
I'm by no means big or ripped, but I don't look like a fat kid that lost weight, I look normal and I must admit that the exercise ball workouts have done a bunch to help.
I don't go to the gym b/c its weird marketing and seems every time I go it costs $50. Also weird meat eater sweat and madness coupled with steroids freaks me out these days...
Bikram Yoga (and others), Exercise ball, and good food will tighten you right up. I think if you do this stuff and couple it with a few other outdoor activities (biking, hiking, climbing, swimming, etc) you will be just fine. Let me know when you get your ball and I'll further explain some stuff I do.
Note: If you go buy a ball, make sure you get the one that is not the cheap shiny plastic b/c those stick to you when you are rolling around and it sucks. Get the dull looking plastic ones, they are better.
Peace
Whenever I do sets of pull-ups, I feel like I lose body fat. I don't know why, but I really think it is a really effective exercise. Putting a pull-up bar in your doorway is really easy !
I second everything raw climber said.
Oh and for my exercising, I do sets of 200 pushups, 200 crunches (it does NOTHING), 30 minute cardio every other day. Then the rest of the days I do vigorous rock climbing workouts. On wednesdays I do 200 squats and 200 hyper extensions. Oh and yoga...
Yay!! I love deep breathing. I remember you, me, and steve did these when you came to visit. Deep breathing is great for conditioning the lungs of any athlete. Your workout routine is awesome and it's definitely working for you. Keep it up Anthony! Steve has been working out with me too. (few days a week) lol I should just take him on a looong run to your house. It may take a few days but hey... we can do it! : )
sadly i threw my back out right around the time i decided to go raw. i used to be into yoga a couple years ago but now i'm scared of causing further damage. if i had the money to get some individual lessons to discuss with someone my possibilities i would feel more comfortable. anyway i guess most people aren't really into yoga but i think its the best work out ever! nothing like constantly pushing yourself to stretch further in life! =)
Hey Tuesday,
I just want to say that you can heal your back...YOU! Bikram yoga is specifically designed for beginners and people working with injuries, especially back problems. There are so many testimonials from people who had ruptured, herniated discs, were told they would have to have their spine fused, told they may never walk again or would have to live in pain for the rest of their lives and on meds...they all had the same experience (check on the testimonials on www.bikramyoga.com. Many western docs are even recommending bikram for people who don't want/can't afford surgery. The best part is that every Bikram teacher is trained to address your specific issue in a class setting so you do not need to pay crazy money for private lessons (though many bikram teachers do offer privates for people wanting to advance their practice or focus on specific postures).
In the class you can do as little or as much as you are comfortable with...just talk to the teacher ahead of time and they will guide you. We are designed with the innate ability to heal ourselves...we just have to put the body in the best place to support its natural self-healing capability. You have already taken a huge step by going raw...you are already stretching ;-)
Good luck in your journey!

im defintly going to try, I have back pains all the time! it could be growing pains, or just sitting the wrong way, im a tall chick and i tend to slouch a lot..so Im dying to some alleviation!
I'm 5'10''! I want to grow another inch but I don't believe it's going to happen. However, I heard pilates wan wonderful at lengthening your spine which might actually make you taller!
Has anyone else heard this? Does Yoga do the same?

i have "gotten taller" while doing both, but i think it is due to the correction of spinal misalignments, tight back muscles...and better posture. so many people slouch and don't realize it!
Bikrams will give you the alleviation you seek. It may take afew sessions but you will improve. Strengthening the back muscles will dramatically decrease back pain. Stretching, strengthening, and cleansing. I also found that when I ate cooked foods, or high amounts of raw fats, the back pain comes back and its quite stiff in the morning.
For me I love to go long at a nice and steady comfortable pace. The longer you go the more your body looks at fat for fuel (instead of muscle glycogen when we go shorter at higher intensities) and starts getting efficient at burning it.
I like to do one long run and one long bike a week(I do other bikes/runs but shorter) as my key workouts. I have slowly build up where my long run is now at 2:45 hours and my bike has been kept at 5:30 hours for some time. I burn up over 4000 calories in some of those workouts. If you want to see definition...you have to show the muscle first. Meaning getting rid of the fat that is hiding it. Low fat diet seems to be working well for me now too, it also allows the body to carry more oxygen, thus increasing your ability to going long.
I hardly ever do any crunch/lifting but when I do it is body weight exercises. Once a month I may do swing ups, pull ups, different core workouts. I love watching videos by Scott Sonnon on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be6vO01rgx8&feature=related He puts out videos like that from which I take what I like for body weight exercises. The guy is also amazing at yoga.

i don't know your situation, but if you can, i would look up a very experienced yoga instructor and try for some private lessons. there are many, MANY things you can do with yoga even if you cannot put your right hand flat on the floor.
