Give it to me Raw - Raw Food Community

Fats and Oil, is one better? Is there purpose for them in adults?

My hands used to hurt too much when I'd try to handle cold things. My main fats were EVOO and wild raw coconut. I was 99.9% vegan most of that time.

When I was younger, and totally whole (vegan) food (not all raw) my periods stopped for months. When I added wheatgerm oil to my diet it came back and was fine again.

My hands and everything have been great on a high animal fat diet. I've been avoiding butter (unpasteurized pastured) this week. Now this morning when I was cutting up refrigerated meat for my cat, my hands really hurt from the cold, that hadn't happened in a long time.

You know I'll be eating lots of butter today.

Who has any fat or oil stories? Pro or con.

I use coconut oil on my skin and hair too, its great. Olive oil on your bike chain? Haven't tried that one...

Coconut oil is also a great K-Y replacement, if you know what I mean;P

I guess it would be. I've never tried either. I heard a vulgar term for vaginal secretions used to be goose grease because before K-Y existed people from outside the tropics used it, either that or they used goose grease to lubricate truck johnson bars or shafts or something. I guess it would be better than Vaseline, as some people use anything handy.

did someone just say vaginal secretions??? lol

uh-huh. That's what I said. Goose-grease hehe. I bet coconut cream might be good though, for those that need something.

Depending on your body chemistry, olive oil can be good on skin hair and scalp too.
I find coconut oil holds up better on inanimate metal objects than olive oil (seems some people used to use goose grease or lard). We used olive oil for the Champions at Ann Wigmore's, but I find coconut works better for me there.

Lard was also used in herbal skin healing preparations (and still is in some countries on pharmacy shelves). Cottonseed oil, now we all know that's a big business.

From AskAnOrganicMom April 2008:

using hexane-extracted omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (DHA/ARA) derived from algae and soil fungus: “Organic products with the prohibited fatty acid supplements include ... DHA (Dean Foods) and organic infant formulas, including Similac Organic (Abbott Laboratories), Earth's Best (Hain Celestial), and Bright Beginnings Organic (PBM Products.)”

The fatty acids are said to help with brain and eye development, but there is some question as to whether or not these vegetarian extracted versions do. These supplements are produced by Martek Biosciences Corporation and extracted ... with the use of a “highly explosive neurotoxic petrochemical solvent, hexane. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration lists hexane as a serious hazard to worker health and safety, and the Environmental Protection Agency classifies it as a hazardous air pollutant. The National Organic Program strictly prohibits its use in the processing of organic foods and ingredients.”

According to FDA reports Cornucopia obtained via a freedom of information request, formula – both conventional and organic, the reports didn’t differentiate between the two – containing DHA/ARA has sickened infants (side effects include diarrhea and vomiting). They’re focusing on organic formula and not on conventional because their goal is to shed light on the fact that companies are breaking organic rules and the USDA is looking the other way.

So, I'm just asking what about hexanes or babies? (but mostly hexanes for those of us that choose supplements)

I just wanted to say thank you for making this post. I've been concerned about my fat intake lately, but I have no desire to eat any fats. I think the only lipids I've been getting in my diet in the past few months are the trace amounts in fruits and vegetables. Reading everyone's experience makes me more open to the idea of implementing some changes in my diet. And to add my opinion to everyone else's, I think that the best sources of fats are in fresh avocado, durian, coconut, etc., not oils or seeds that have been sitting on shelves for ages. <3

You're welcome. It does make sense that fruit fat is better than seeds on a shelf. One can basically feel the enzymatic life in fresh naturally wet fruit, while seeds almost feel dead.

That being said, While I was vegan, for a time most of my fat was from fresh ground sesame seeds, and I felt and looked very well. Maybe it made my eyes too wide, I'm not sure, but I felt really good AND menstruated every month on time and without ever having experienced PMS in my life. Periods were light. I was more sensitive to temperatures than I am now (didn't like jumping into cold water, totally disliked the feel of very warm showers).

Thank you Joy.

Do you happen to have the link to the freeze damage wheat discussion?

I was trying to pull up the discussions I have commented on, but had trouble getting more then 20? I left a message for Dhurmil because it says I have (192) discussions, but then when I try to access them it says I have 0, which is what I have started, none as of yet. I also left a message for Debbie Took, because I know that her listed blog on this discussion was a very good blog, about frozen wheatberries which she experimented with, and about frozen produce, and I think there were also other sites listed by other people. I asked her if she knows which discussion this was on GITMR.

Thank you, so much Joy. There should be an easy way to get our old discussions. Have a good night.
