Give it to me Raw - Raw Food Community

Hi. I've been here for a couple of weeks, and have replied to some posts, but haven't properly introduced myself. I'm a newbie to the raw food world. Currently I'm eating about 70-80% raw and have been really enjoying my transition. So much so that my meat loving former marine husband is now thinking about making the change. He tried some of my zuchini pasta last night and looked back at the couscous on his plate with definite disappointment.

I am lucky enough to be the mother of 2 of the smartest, sweetest most beautiful souls on the planet (one of whom is in my picture), and although I'm haven't begun transitioning them to a raw diet yet, they're intrigued by all the colorful interesting things that I've been enjoying eating.

So, the other reason for starting this discussion is that I'm curious about what folks do for a living. I know that some of you out there are professionals in the raw/health food industry, but I'm curious how many of us aren't and what we do.

I'll go first. I'm a trainer/instructional designer for a very large software company that shall remain nameless.

It's interesting being raw in the corporate world. My company has a tendency to bring in food for us like pizza and buffalo wings and (ech!) fried chicken and ice cream. We do have a cafeteria that has a salad bar, but there is also a lot of bad bad food around. Plus I don't have the luxury of being able to blend or juice or chop anything in our break rooms, so anything I bring in for lunch has to be prepped at home first.

So, let's hear it. What do you do? Do you find it hard to balance the raw food life w/ working life?

I make my lunch every night for the next day. It's often fruit or salad, but I do also make complex recipes (many from goneraw) like raw dancing chicken salad, collard green wraps with cheese with spring onions, etc. I work as an administrative assistant at a University. No kids, life is all about me. So i have lots of time for food prep and fun.

How nice, I love that dancing salad. I've always reacted to onions though.

I have worked as a natural holistic vegan (and beegan because owner requested) chef, vegan kitchen director and vegan nature therapy instructress in several different religious and health establishments.

For the last three years am very much a stay at home wife and mom, caregiver, other responsibilities etc (a woman's work is never done, and that old saying is much more apt in some cases than others).

Hi! I am a single 24 year old living in a floating home by myself in Portland, Oregon!

I work as a Loss Prevention Agent for a large high end department store....So I am basically a paid people watcher, I watch people steal and then I arrest them! It's a fun job, I enjoy it. It is a lot of report writing though.

I am learning how to stay raw while working in a mall. There is only one option for me if I don't bring fruit and that's Jamba Juice. I do not like their fake tasting "real" smoothies. If I get too busy to bring food, I usually will get a large fresh juice from there.

Hah, that's cool. Do you have a card like Laurence Fishburne on 21 that says "Loss Prevention" :)

I work as a Human Resources Advisor for an organisation that supports people with learning disabilities. I travel a lot with my job so there are two sides to being raw for me. When I'm not travelling I get to work from home which means it's easy enough to take a break and go whizz up a raw storm. Working from home and raw go well together as there's literally zero temptation and everything is at hand.

On the downside, when I'm away in hotels I usually end up having to take a suitcase full of food and a travel blender and sometimes I end up eating crap if I've not prepared enough :)

First I am a mama and the youngest is two months. Being a single mother doesn't permit a lot of time to focus on complex raw meals. So, I eat very simply. When in an area where I can pick wild edibles freely that is the best! When that is not an option, we have smoothies, fresh fruits and salads. I would like to have more time (and hands) to create some beautiful yummy raw dishes and have in the past..that time will come again. Oh, and I am a natural living educator that has the best 'boss' every...myself:) A lot of time is spent writing online right now because of wanting to support us doing what I love but staying with the kids. I also do private consults and public speaking etc when the opportunities are presented.

I travel a good bit too, although not yet since going raw. I may pick your brain for some tips before my next business trip.

Thanks,
M

I provide all sorts of building and repair services in a rural Northern California County. I do off-grid alternative energy systems, build and repair country water systems using creeks and springs, plumbing, electrical and various phases of carpentry. I especially like to do upgrades of energy systems that were built by the "back to the landers", who came here in the 60's and 70's. I bring some of these inefficient makeshift systems up to state of the art and reduce the owner's dependence on expensive fossil fuel generators.

I'm on the go a lot, so I have gotten used to packing my cooler bag for a day away from home with enough fruit, greens, nuts and sometimes fancier raw recipes. Mornings I often have the rest of a big breakfast smoothie. More often than not my meals are mono. Because I drive so much I will often take things that I can snack on while driving.

This sounds a lot like what I do some days... when I'm traveling I take little snacks and some fruit with me. I'm an educator at an organic farm now, so I also get to pick fresh fruit and veggies as snacks as the day goes by.

I used to be in the school system and I found it tough sometimes. I realized that most people really have no idea about this way of living. It made it tough for me, too because I did it on my own. I've decided to educate myself more on raw living and then I'm going to teach it.

Uti - youre doing some good things, I'd love to learn more about it. It all sounds like things I am interested in.

I am a student. :-) It may not make money, but it definitely is a (more than) full-time commitment! I am a super-senior at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando and hope to graduate this December. I am a Political Science major, so I am always involved in various extracurricular activities, both on campus and off. Right now, for example, I am interning with the Mike Smith for Congress campaign and working to get a new student-run newspaper up and running (while taking 4 summer school classes - ack!!). Once I graduate, I hope to go to grad school for Public Policy, and then...who knows. As long as it is politically related, I'll probably love it! :-)

I imagine that it is slightly easier to be a raw student in that most of your peers are less dogmatic about such things (at least in the crowd I run with), but I don't know any other raw students in my area. On the other hand, it is difficult because I am always broke (I'm too busy for even a part-time job, so funds are very limited) and I never have much time for food prep. I have a green smoothie in the morning and that frequently lasts me through both breakfast and lunch. Dinners are harder, and I won't lie - they aren't always raw. But when they are they are very simple: salads, zucchini noodles, wraps. I am about to embark on a 3-week green smoothie feast, which should cut down on food prep time a little bit. It's a bit of a struggle to be 100% raw as a student, but not impossible if you're committed! :-)
