Give it to me Raw - Raw Food Community

Hi-
I have been high raw for 4 months, and in the last month, maybe 3 weeks, I have experienced a lot of hair loss..in the shower every day chunks of about 10-20 strands fall out...I have very thick hair, so it's not noticeable, but wonder what this is attributable to...has anyone else experienced this??? My nails are strong still, but I am wondering if this is a detox thing, or if I am eating insufficient B vitamins (hard to fathom, really) or protein (I eat about 10% protein on a 1600 calorie a day diet)...I am reading on the Mayo site that physical and or emotional changes can manifest as hair loss up to 3 months later, and I know that my detox was strong (not crazy strong, but like pimples and greasy hair and fatigue) for about 2 weeks, so perhaps this is just the aftermath of that.

Updated: okay, so i just bought a supplement for Hair Skin and Nails from the HFS...it has a bunch of vitamins in it..I took one pill, which is 1/3 the dosage they recommend, and with 20 minutes, my scalp stopped tingling. I don't know which ingredient in the pill might have helped. Perhaps the Biotin?

Anyone know raw foodies consumption of biotin? It's found in grains, eggs, and a bit in spinach, mushrooms and corn...also in legumes....Biotin is critical for hair growth etc, and this was the nutrient that the guy at my HFS suggested might be deficient for me.

I am going to take this supplement in a low dose for 2-3 weeks and see if my hair loss decreases.

Am curious about other's experiences with biotin.

Hrm.. on whfoods.com. It it says "One of the least well-known of the B-complex vitamins was originally referred to as 'vitamin H' " Here it says: egg yolks as well as Swiss Chard are rich in Biotin. I guess this is actually water soluable, maybe that is the difference.

o, I found a better link. I like Linus Pauling: http://lpi.oregonstate.edu/infocenter/vitamins/biotin/

many different deficiencies such as iron can cause hair loss

thanks--and i have been anemic in the past so i am trying to pay attention to that. I don't feel fatigued, which is how i felt with anemia. I might take floradix, an herbal iron infusion.

I used to loose a lot more than 10 or 20 everyday in the shower, for years, eating healthy vegan for years straight or unhealthy vegan, but me too, my hair was thick, so no one else knew. I wasn't raw then though. I am not vegan now, and my hair is thick, and I might lose 1 hair in the shower, at most, and that is very rare. When I was raw vegan, if I am remembering correct, I didn't lose hair.

That's interesting. Aajonus says that in his experience (and that of those around him who have done raw veg and done raw pd) that raw veganism is kind of an emotional roller coaster, and that's one of the reasons he prefers raw omni.

Me personally, hm, emotionally raw veganism was hard to deal with all the sudden emotionalities at first, but then I got used to it and it was like a big high all the time, I guess like some kind of drug, maybe like a constant cocaine.

With RAF I mostly feel (since the beginning) a calm loving feeling (it's a different kind of healing vibration), no big high, no big lows, no outbursts, pretty much calm and under control, must be the hormones. The hormone smell is one of the major things that made it hard for me to start eating this diet. I wasn't used to it, as vegan foods didn't smell like hormones to me. I think hormones were kind of disgusting me for a few years before I switched to pd.

I have always heard that losing anywhere from 50-100 hairs a day is "normal". That our hair follicles grow at different times and that we are always losing hair. Based upon this site that appears to be true.
http://www.wisegeek.com/how-many-hairs-are-lost-from-the-average-hu...

Also, I read somewhere, it could have been in one of Tonya Zavasta's books, that the hair is the last thing that the body will supply nutrients to. So, we have a tendency to gray, and lose hair, because our body isn't receiving the nutrients it needs (there are also those that have it as a hereditary factor). That once our body begins to receive all the necessary nutrients for the organs that it will then start to supply the hair with the means to return to it's natural color. That is why there are people like Ann Wigmore who was able to return to her brown color after being previously gray. Who knows....

I take it that this is not a "normal" occurence for you, otherwise you wouldn't have posted this :) I lose about 20-50 per day, always have. I have a lot of hair that is rather fine so I have never really been concerned about it.

thanks-yes, this is very unusual for me, i've never lost any hair in any noticeable amount. I don't want to analyze my diet to death, but I do want to be sure i am eating a nice variety....

Stop having showers:)

Sometimes hair loss is partially from touching the scalp a lot and irritating it. I would like to learn more about rolfing though, as I know people who were helped greatly y it.

Maybe it will change back in the winter. Remember, many mammals shed their winter coats, then regain them for the cold again. You are now eating raw, like animals do, maybe that accounts for this.

maybe...i'd love to figure the tingling thing out though.

I had a similar thing happen. It was when I was eating too much fat, not enough greens and too little protein. I started taking Biotin, B vitamins and B 12 and make pea protein shakes daily and my hair is luxurious now. I also eat a brazil nut a day to get the selenium that is crucial. Sounds like you're on the right track!
