Give it to me Raw - Raw Food Community

Hey Guys!
So, perhaps it's the oldest one in the raw vegan book...but I'd love to hear how different folks deal with the following scenario:

It's a chilly, misty morning--the fam is all stoked to have you home for the holidays-- and mom is pouring coffee, dad boils eggs, and your little sister is slicing up leftover apple pie from last night's party...and you are making a green smoothie...

Food. It's a big one, right? It's where we've come from, it's how our ancestors survived immigration, poverty, drought... it's what we're made of physically and emotionally (I tip my hat to parents working to raise their kids on a raw diet) And now you're "turning your back on your roots...what? my food isn't good enough for you?" Welcome to Passive-aggression City, USA. And it really sucks to have to make a speech 'cause "Of COURSE we support you, but really, apple pie is made out of apples!"
I try to stay loving, and humorous but...Wow. I just wanna enjoy my smoothie...maybe I should get one of those Raw Food: officially bringing sexy back shirts and just say "read the sign" when they swoop in for another round...
Any other ideas out there?

My mom told me earlier today that I'll come to my senses one day about my diet and realize that I've been completely wrong. She thinks I've taken things way too far and that I'll probably endanger any kids I might have one day (because they won't get enough calcium, protein, blah blah blah).

So, yeah, this is gonna be a freakin' work-in-progress with her.

I'm sorry to hear that! You're not sick are you? And you're probably healthier than anyone she knows so what;s the problem? She probably feels like you're rejecting her when that isn't the case at all. I would explain this to her and then politely ask her to not bring up the subject again. The comment about the kids is really a low blow and completely unnecessary. It sounds like she brought this up over the holidays too and I don;t understand why people have to say hurtful things over the holidays- it seems particularily seflish and rude to me.

You could also explain that if there were a world-wide nuclear war you may consider eating spam if it was the last thing on the earth but for now, you choose to eat fresh! There are a lot of people out there with serious health problems who wish they had treated themselves better but for many it is too late.=) Take care! I know your 500 plus friends here understand!

I'm not sick at all. I've never felt better. I think she was pissed off that I wasn't eating any of her cooked food. She doesn't get it that I just don't eat it anymore. Oh well. Like I said, she's gonna be a work in progress.

Won't she be surprised one day when you present her with a beautiful, strong and perfectly healthy grandchild. Touche! (=^_^=)

My Advise is to share with your family. Make them feel like they are included. If they don't like the green smoothies let them join in on something else raw and tasty like some great dessert you make. Anything foreign to anyone is always perceived as a threat in someway. You don't want to perpetuate that because really your family is way more important than food will ever be. If they ask questions just answer them honestly. You should also be really upfront with them and let them know why you drink the smoothies in the first place, tell them how great they make you feel. They will be curious and respect you for informing them as well.
Good Luck!

I sympathize with you.
;-) sometimes I have to eat before I go.
I do sit and drink tea. One friend has trouble eating with me if I don't eat.
I don't like to be in position to have choose between staying healthy and being agreeable.
Since I started to work on my diet my friends and family say it no fun to eat with me anymore.
Hang in there!

It is unfortunate that food is such an emotional thing. However, here we are telling each other to walk gently with non-raw folks and to not push it on them. Too bad they cannot offer us the same respect with cooked food, dairy, meat, junk food, etc. Oh well. I still feel strongly about my conviction to have the freedom to chose how I wish to take care of myself, no matter what anyone says or how they feel. Funny thing is, I am never ill, and they are quite often down with one ailment or another. (=^_^=)

I totally agree with that phrase "staying healthy vs. being agreeable." It's a battle I fight on a weekly basis.

Every time I go home my Mom offers me ice cream. I always say, "no thanks Mom I don't eat dairy." I don't think this will ever change. I guess I'm lucky that my folks don't pay too much attention. Last Thanksgiving I brought my own food, prepared it, and ate it with my family. It had the same colors as the food they were eating and only my sisters noticed. At the end of the meal my Dad asked me if I felt tired after eating all that turkey. I just rubbed by belly and smiled. My strategy is to quietly blend in.

Hi Rachel! What did you have that looked like turkey? That would be a neat trick- food that looked so real no one would notice! =)

Sadly nothing looked like turkey on my plate - my family just doesn't pay that much attention. I think the orange and white colors sealed the deal. We also ate Thanksgiving dinner on paper plates so it was very informal and easy to blend in. Maybe there is a faux-holiday plate opportunity here that can be invented on this forum that we can all use.
