Give it to me Raw - Raw Food Community

So I'm having alot of issues with breakfast, it seems. I wake up absolutely starving, my hungriest time is in the morning and afternoon and I know that alot of raw foodies suggest eating light in the morning (green juices, mono fruit meals, etc) I have tried that a number of times and when I do, I always end up falling off of the wagon later in the day because I'm starving. I would love to come up with some kind of filling smoothie to have every morning and to hold me until lunch. I've tried green smoothies with just greens and fruit. I've never tried adding fat to it because I've heard that's not great for food combining??

Any suggestions?

also, I'm trying to lose weight so I would like to keep my breakfast not too high in avo or banana.

thanks!

Yes, the Spanish breakfast scramble by Ani Phyo is fantastic, filling and delicious.

Karen Knowler has a good filling breakfast recipe as well: raw muesli

* 0.5 cup of almonds
* 0.5 cup of hazelnuts
* 0.5 cup of Brazil nuts (cut in half)
* 2-3 dates or 2-3 dried apricots (cut in pieces)
* 1 cup of berries
* 1 banana (sliced)
* 1 apple (cut in pieces)
* 1 cup of almond milk
* topping: coconut fibres

You can vary this recipe with different nuts and fruits.

I was thinking of the exact same recipe Janine & you put it on here, thanks! This def. helps b/c its a little bit more filling than just a smoothie. I have such a hard time in the mornings also, and if I don't get someting to fill me up I end up eating something that I shouldn't be eating b/c I am soo hungry. But I have found that something like granola (it's not completely raw,) or a raw food bar will help mid-morning & help me last until lunch. And sometimes if I have to, I will have a bowl of plain, all natural oatmeal with flaxseed oil & hemp seeds to fill me up a bit. Again, not completely raw but it helps for those really hungry mornings. I usually have a long morning at work and don't get a chance to eat until later so the oatmeal keeps me pretty satisfied until then.

Ani Phyo has awesome smoothie recipes, that use fruit, but also algaes and nuts, which keep you full. And don't let anyone tell you that what works for you is "wrong." Everyone's body is different. For the first year of eating raw food, I was constantly trying to drink only water for breakfast, because that's what "everyone" recommended. But I felt a lot better when I started having breakfast first thing in the morning.

Here's a sample recipe idea:

1 T hemp seed
1 T flax seed
3 ice cubes
1 T green algae powder
1-2 pieces fruit of your choice (apples, pears, oranges, berries, peaches, etc.)
1/2 C water

Blend everything in a high-powered blender and drink down. Very filling.

don't sweat the bananas and avocados too much. i'm trying to lose weight too and i haven't found them to be a problem. (but of course, i only know my own body. yours might act differently!)

proper food combining means nothing if it's hindering you rather than helping. i add just a small amount of fat, such as a handful of almonds, to my usual green smoothie breakfast. if the combining realyl bothers you, wait half an hour before eating nuts. i really noticed a difference when i made my breakfast a little bit fatter.

There are so many ways to keep weight down or lose. I know people (who live in the tropics) who specifically eat bananas when they want to lose weight. They grow their own, and swear by it helping anyone lose weight. Me? Bananas I don't think ever put weight on me, but then I've barely eaten a lot of them in my life.

Avocados too, I've found if I only combine them with tomato, tomatillo, cilantro and lemon, I don't see how they put weight on anyone. Maybe you need to be more careful with your food combining. If you eat a lot of carbs with the avo, that may be why you gain weight from it.

I was vegan up until a few years ago. I had a few extra pounds on. I completely switched over what I ate in one day to mostly of all foods only saturated fat (raw) with a little unheated unfiltered honey, a half a piece of fruit and celery juice each day. I took off a couple of pounds/week the first month, and felt fabulous and so much better than previous. It was a different feeling though, like slower (good slow), calmer, more aware, more blissful, serene, very sated, etc. It also took off all my celulite during that time and improved my response to things (as I got better reactions from people too). Of course there's the problem that if you tell most Americans that you're on a high cholesterol or raw egg diet, they highly fear for your heart health and for salmonella and other fears that haven't affected me at all. These people calm down when they see the differences in you, and if they don't, that's their problem, but trust me, they do calm down and some even get interested in trying your foods or recommending them. By the way, I used the honey to ptomote healthful bacteria, but it had a side effect of strengthening my heart. What I'm describing is from the Primal Diet. It's a very low carb diet.

One breakfast that keeps me going for HOURS is a cereal of dehydrated buckwheat sprouts (buckwheaties) mixed with some coconut and a banana, with almond milk poured over it. It's perfect. I've realized that i go so long without eating after i've eaten that for breakfast. Not too much fat. Not some unsatisfying sugar high. Might not be angelic food combining principles but as lots have said already, do what works for YOU.

I totally agree with everyone here who has said to just go with what your body is telling you, and to try not to overthink the food combining or "rules" for weight loss. Your body may do great with something that doesn't work for other people, so try to listen to what you are craving and see what happens when you follow those instincts. I was following food combining for a while and I found that it actually made me feel worse. Really sweet fruits like bananas and melons and such make me feel awesome as long as they are combined with fats, but when I eat them alone, they make me feel awful. Since I'd like to keep eating bananas and melons, I'm going with the good feeling for now, totally aware that what feels good may change in the future.

I've noticed so many changes in my appetite since I went raw. Sometimes I am thrilled to only have juice until early afternoon--lately I've really been feeling the need for something substantial in the mornings. My favorite breakfast at the moment is a blended up frozen banana mixed with ground dates, pecans, and a splash of vanilla (kind of like a blonde brownie sundae). It's a terrible choice according to food combining principles, but it is delicious and it makes me feel great for hours and hours. Often I go until evening without being hungry after eating that for breakfast, and I've been seeing amazing weight loss, too. I was nervous about using bananas and nuts, too, but I've found that if I listen to my body, I see incredible changes happening. When I am getting ravenous cravings or hunger pangs, it is almost always because I really want a bit of fat, and I feel so much better if I just eat half an avocado or a few nuts (waaay better than any cooked fat option I might succumb to otherwise!). But your body may be asking for something different...

One last suggestion--when I know I need to go a while without eating for whatever reason, I love to eat a grapefruit with a spoonful of blue-green algae. The algae makes me feel amazing and gives me a ton of nutrients, and the grapefruit ensures that I won't be hungry for a good long while. Good luck!

To keep the nuts down, I've been eating a lot of oatmeal lately. It's so yummy and filling. Buy rolled oats and they only need to soak 5-10 minutes. By the time I'm making the rest of the recipe they are ready. Try adding a Tablespoon hemp seeds if you think you need a little more fat. Hemp isn't as heavy as other nuts but gives you a bit of that rich creamy consistency that you might be wanting.

*Oatmeal with Applesauce:
1/2 c soaked rolled oats
handful raisins/dried fruit soaked with oats
2-3 apples/pears pureed to a chunky sauce
pinch salt
1/4 t cinnamon/nutmeg/cardamon etc.
1T hemp seeds

That's good to know Erin. I never know which oats to buy that are most likely raw.

Soaked buckwheat (soaked overnight, then drained) and fruit makes a great breakfast (particularily with a liquid). I have 1/3 of a cup of soaked buckwheat groats and a couple bananas or cut up apples. I think that raw food alone should really help with weight loss, and that your body is much more able to dispense of the food in a raw state. I really doubt that avocado or banana (unless you had 6+ bananas a day) would inhibit weight loss, but I could certainly be wrong.

Cheers, and good luck.

Hi! I almost always have fruit with coconut oil, cacao and banana for breakfast. yet I have lost 13 pounds in just 3 weeks, I do think that Teran has a good point that whole raw foods are better used and eliminated and thus don't tend to hang out where they aren't wanted...

how about eating enough fruit at dinner so that you dont wake up hungry?, to lose weight it is not necessary to feel starving all the time, just up your activity level i have heard from dr graham that to trim up to lean more on the veg side while this still compromises your nutrition, you look like you are already loosing weight, i dont think you need to worry about overeating fruit it can be a hard thing to do, my breakfast is often water then activity then sweet fruit, sometimes i wake up hungry and eat a smaller than normal fruit meal just to get going. you can get scientific about it at fitday.com or nutridiary.com would you believe that i eat around 20 bananas in one meal? by the way hubba hubba and you are the one that led me to this site
