Give it to me Raw - Raw Food Community

since starting raw in March this year, I've had food poisoning TWICE. I've never had it before, and wasn't sick like this since at least my early teens- over 15 years.

has anyone else had this occur more frequently with raw foods? do you know what caused it? how to avoid it?

the first day I planned to start on 80-90% raw in March, I had to eat a restaurant meal (salad) and got extremely sick for the next two days. It set back my raw ambitions for a couple weeks. :)

now, I've been 99% raw for about 2 months, and got mild food poisoning last night. Can you get it from a banana or grapes? I didn't have much food in the twelve hours prior to getting sick (at 3am). It seems extremely unlikely that some raisins, nuts, dried apricots, or a larabar caused it- the other foods I had. I feel fine now, but I'm afraid to touch the $6 worth of new organic grapes in my fridge...I only had about 4 of them last night.

any advice and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hmmmm, I would be interested to see what more experienced raw foodies would say, but I almost wonder if you were detoxing, as opposed to dealing with food poisoning. I know detoxing can be extreme for some people. It just doesn't seem likely that you would get food poisoning from what you were eating.

Anyone else?

it would be odd if it were detox ..i ate 50-60% raw before, and very unprocessed. and i've felt great for the past two months.... I found out that my boyfriend ate the same bunch of bananas and grapes (only three times as much as me) but didn't get sick. I'm wondering if the nuts were rancid or something...

Wash your fruits and veggies, you can bet the grocers and growers don't.

True, I don't eat the skin though. I do eat the skin of grapes though and as much as they may say "organic", I don't trust them. Particularly when they don't come from the US.

I think a vinegar dilution can help clean insecticides off.

When in doubt..
If you have any questionable foods like the grapes or nuts, throw them into a bowl with water and 'Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide'. This will kill any bacteria that is on them. You will also be able to see how much bacteria was present, by how much the water foams. For a drastic example of this, toss some bulk-bin walnuts in HP water. Bubble bath!

You might be able to find food grade hp at your co-op.

I highly recommend soaking all nuts in that solution before dehydrating and eating them. The less immune system load, from our food, the better.

On a side note. I've learned to limit how much dried fruit I eat, especially in combination with nuts. I've never felt good after that combo...
I stay far away from Nama Shoyu and Miso.
Bee pollen in only the tiniest bits.
All of those have given me the feeling of being food poisoned at times.. Incapacitated for days, I know what it's like.

And if all else fails and you still are concerned that something you ate had bacteria that may poison you. Drink a cup of Apple Cider Vinegar and water. Old remedy.

Cooked meat, especially cooked liver is about the only thing that did that to me, even if it was only the slightest unnoticeable residue of cooked meat and no more.

hmmm.. i haven't eaten meat since I was 12, though I don't remember ever getting sick off it. I did used to get sick as a kid, about once a year, but thought all children did.

interesting about the nama shoyu and miso- I always considered them traditional Japanese foods, and remembered some of the longevity studies always identified a group of people in Japan. I could be remembering this with wild inaccuracy though...

I left something out there, it's the fact they have processed grain/pulse. But, come to think of it, I think Japanese have the highest rate of stomach cancer. If the same internal bodily organ gets insulted enough times, cancer may develop in it. I read a medical thing stating that might be due to eating salt containing foods as much as the do. I think you're referring to the Okinawans (which belongs to Japan). And they do eat quite a bit of plain raw fish on their small island, if I'm not mistaken.
