Fats and Oil, is one better? Is there purpose for them in adults?

My hands used to hurt too much when I'd try to handle cold things. My main fats were EVOO and wild raw coconut. I was 99.9% vegan most of that time.

When I was younger, and totally whole (vegan) food (not all raw) my periods stopped for months. When I added wheatgerm oil to my diet it came back and was fine again.

My hands and everything have been great on a high animal fat diet. I've been avoiding butter (unpasteurized pastured) this week. Now this morning when I was cutting up refrigerated meat for my cat, my hands really hurt from the cold, that hadn't happened in a long time.

You know I'll be eating lots of butter today.

Who has any fat or oil stories? Pro or con.

I have a little experience with people with diseases like ALD, ALS, MS, Gran Mal Epilepsy, Petit Mal Epilepsy and the like, fat? Very needed. Without it they go into convulsions, spasms, crippling pain and it just gets worse then.

I think they partially increase the fats for fuel Nigi, as carbohydrates seem less tolerated. Yes, I do fully believe with all my being that raw fats would actually help nourish their nerves and heal the nerves and get rid of the scar(s) little by little. Too bad they don't seem to have made that jump yet. I don't think the FDA would ever allow it anyway.

In my experience, fat is absolutely necessary. Whenever I (accidentally) eat a very low-fat diet, my skin gets dry and flaky, my nails get soft, and my hair is dull. I know that sounds vain (and it is), but it is also a way your body is trying to tell you that you are missing something important. I try to eat 1 source of natural fat (e.g., avocado, olives) everyday. I don't do too well with raw nuts (too heavy and hard to digest), but I can take a tablespoon or two of nut butter (go figure). I try to minimize oils, but I do use good EVOO for salads and whatnot. Seems to be working well for me, but everyone is different!

It's not vain. If your nails are soft then it's hard to work or play with them. If your skin gets too tight and dry, it may be hard to move those areas. Some people can't handle nut fiber (when it isn't broken up), so the nut butter makes some sense, I've seen that.

I know personally someone who has not had menstrual bleeding for over 5 years on a 100% raw diet. I don't think she minds her fats though, she eats at least one avocado every day and most times 2, along with nuts for Omegas. Doesn't touch the oils though. She doesn't think it's logical, to add something that far out of it's natural state. And she's had 2 healthy kids since she's stopped menstruating, so I think a lot of that common knowledge stuff about menstruation being natural and healthy maybe isn't the whole truth? It most likely lies in the fact that besides raw foodists, there isn't another group of people besides those with severe malnutrition (like anorexics and bulimics) who lack regular periods. Adding that to the fact that Raw Foodism isn't generally researched or even known about to a lot of general practitioners or obgyns and you've got a lot of confusing "facts" to muddle through. I do know this though, since around my second month raw my period became a lot lighter. I went from 5-6 days of constant heavy bleeding to 2-3 days of light spotting. And the cramps disappeared ^_^ So.... Who knows :P

Regarding the OP, I DO think fats are necessary to adults. I mean, clearly! People who go long on no-fat or very low-fat diets develop loads of health issues, most obviously with skin, along with organ health issues. I know that from personal experience as well as having researched into it.

If animal fats and extracted fats make YOU feel better, why stop them? Everyone is different, for me personally I can't seem to handle them. I tried raw cheese I got from a relative and a few days later I broke out in a horrible way and started craving cooked food again like mad for the first time since I've started raw. It took a week of a no-salt "cleanse" to get me out of that. But then again prior to that I hadn't eaten cheese for around... 6 years? So definitely to each his own :)

My periods have definitely got lighter - I went from 5-6 days down to exactly 3 days this last cycle (the cycle was a week longer) and the stomach cramping was less! (although I am excited by the day when I don't get that too). But, having said that, I had no outbreaks on my skin (unheard of) no sore breasts........must be the raw!

:) That's wonderful!

I've had a similar experience. I went raw vegan from cooked vegan. 8 months later my periods are perfect. They come every 28 days and last for 3 days. They are light and pain free. I used to have heavy, 6 day long periods every 21 one days when I ate cooked vegan.

I eat cold stone-pressed olive oil and raw extra virgin coconut oil. I also eat lots of flax and sunflower seeds. I don't eat any nuts. While I don't think that extracted oils are the absolute best food ever, my diet now is a lot better than it used to be, and I feel a lot better :) . I hope to eventually move away from the extracted oils and just do whole raw vegan foods like durianrider does. But I am making changes slowly at a pace that is comfortable to me, because otherwise I would just go back to SAD.

"I used to have heavy, 6 day long periods every 21 one days when I ate cooked vegan."

For a couple of months as a teen while vegan I under-ate (mostly ate a small SAD salad no dressing) and didn't eat whole food (no brown rice no real nuts etc). During that time I had my period (bleeding) like 80% of the time. I was extremely thin, so weight's not the reason I bled.

Great input. Thank you.

On the primal diet, we are never to eat cheese alone, cheese must be accompanied by a side serving of at least equal size portion of fat. In store bought (or even co-op share) raw cheeses, many are heated to 137 degrees F and still labeled raw (darned misguided labeling laws); because pasteurization isn't till a higher temp and a longer time than those. Also in these cheeses, most of them have salt added. In the primal diet we are never to have salted cheese. Some people are prescribed a few grains of salt, I'm not sure what foods they are to be combined with, I assume added to naturally sparkling natural mineral water.

I wish I could eat cheese, but even the raw stuff makes me phlemmy and I end up with a big zit somewhere on my chin! The only dairy I've ever tolerated was the yogurt and feta I had in Greece a few years back. That yogurt is so unbelievably good that I didn't care- I had to have it and i usually run from dairy! It was Fage Total full fat. I think the Greek version isn't pasteurized, unlike the Fage sold in the U.S. I had no skin problems and my sinuses where totally clear every morning.
