Fats and Oil, is one better? Is there purpose for them in adults?

My hands used to hurt too much when I'd try to handle cold things. My main fats were EVOO and wild raw coconut. I was 99.9% vegan most of that time.

When I was younger, and totally whole (vegan) food (not all raw) my periods stopped for months. When I added wheatgerm oil to my diet it came back and was fine again.

My hands and everything have been great on a high animal fat diet. I've been avoiding butter (unpasteurized pastured) this week. Now this morning when I was cutting up refrigerated meat for my cat, my hands really hurt from the cold, that hadn't happened in a long time.

You know I'll be eating lots of butter today.

Who has any fat or oil stories? Pro or con.

Since the human brain is about 2/3 fat, I would say yes, fat is VERY important. I'm sure most people in this community know this, but eating fat doesn't necessarily make you fat. Eating bad fats, and refined sugars makes you overweight and unhealthy. I think it's very important to eat a good amount of fatty foods daily or semi-daily. Usually I stick to avocados and olive oil, but if the Primal Diet is working for you now (as I'm sure it is for many people) then eat all the butter you want.

I always think it's better to do what you feel is right, and not worry about the preconceptions and prejudices of others.

Thank you Rohit. My preconception was that avocado is better. My soul thought fruit and thinks lovely fruit is numero uno food. My body said different. I accept my body. I'm grateful for knowledge and for having learned to read my body.

Blessings-
Have a wonderful night :)

Finally, some common sense!

LOL, as you know this is highly debatable!
I've studied far too much in this area, and applied it towards myself. No fats and I'm a goner. Terrible consequences. I can't listen to dogma about fats being toxic and all that. Clinicians have PROVED otherwise in their reversal of serious disease and other ailments, take someone with MS and put them on a no fat diet LOL...... watch what happens.
I'm totally irked by these one size fits all diet plans as well written under a cloak of *scientific* authority.
I agree with Gabriel Cousen's , AV , Budwig, etc; raw fat is different.

I think this is the first time I've ever heard someone be so aggressive towards leaving out natural fats completely. Its a comfort to know I'm not alone in thinking a modetate amount of fat is needed (if not at least to make life more interesting!!).

My experience shows we can not only need fats, but some can possibly need to eat more fat than a "normal" amount. There's nothing wrong with needing something. If there was, by the time we're in our thirties many of us have one need or other, maybe Logan's Run would be in order then!

Logan's Run- ha ha! My timeclock would be red by now and it would be off to Carousel for me;)
I have to say that I'm more than a little sick of hearing about 80/10/10 too! I have a feeling that my big, strong kapha/pitta hubby would do great on it, but vata me? Probably not so much. I do fine on a moderate fat diet- although somedays it might be on the higher side. Too high and it doesn't feel right, because I have a vascular condition and if my blood gets too viscous and thick, my leg starts to hurt a little.
I've noticed that I feel better with some fat in my green smoothies (I know this is supposed to be a no-no, but I suspect it works for those of us who burn through sugars like mad).

I think there is a time and a place for oils, esp. with inflammatory conditions. I've had so many of my customers with joint pain do really well with flax oil on a Tb for every fifty lbs. of body weight. Usually within a month, they feel a lot better. Once their levels are up, they can use less. If they went raw, they probably wouldn't need such high doses. When my mom takes it, her skin looks amazingly better.

My skin is much better when I eat fat too (evens out skin color and evens out skin temperature).

I have a little experience with people with diseases like ALD, ALS, MS, Gran Mal Epilepsy, Petit Mal Epilepsy and the like, fat? Very needed. Without it they go into convulsions, spasms, crippling pain and it just gets worse then.

I think they partially increase the fats for fuel Nigi, as carbohydrates seem less tolerated. Yes, I do fully believe with all my being that raw fats would actually help nourish their nerves and heal the nerves and get rid of the scar(s) little by little. Too bad they don't seem to have made that jump yet. I don't think the FDA would ever allow it anyway.

In my experience, fat is absolutely necessary. Whenever I (accidentally) eat a very low-fat diet, my skin gets dry and flaky, my nails get soft, and my hair is dull. I know that sounds vain (and it is), but it is also a way your body is trying to tell you that you are missing something important. I try to eat 1 source of natural fat (e.g., avocado, olives) everyday. I don't do too well with raw nuts (too heavy and hard to digest), but I can take a tablespoon or two of nut butter (go figure). I try to minimize oils, but I do use good EVOO for salads and whatnot. Seems to be working well for me, but everyone is different!

It's not vain. If your nails are soft then it's hard to work or play with them. If your skin gets too tight and dry, it may be hard to move those areas. Some people can't handle nut fiber (when it isn't broken up), so the nut butter makes some sense, I've seen that.
