since all my family lives on the east coast i have to travel by airplane a lot. i really would like to pack some fresh food to take with me but those darn regulations are really restrictive. has anyone tried to get a doctor's note to get permission to bring a cold pack on the plane?
or, how long do salads last? i could bring a salad and some frozen fruit that would keep it cold for awhile.
also, i hate the water restrictions because then it is $3 for water in the airport.
Wow, I was just coming here to bring up this very topic after I posted on my blog about it. Maybe we can come up with some good ideas. I will be flying internationally, with my family of 6 (kids are from 8 years to 9 months).
The liquid restriction is 100ml max in a bottle and it has to be in a clear plastic bag no bigger than 20 cm by 20 cm. You can put as many containers as will fit into that one bag. Here in Austria, you can get plastic or glass containers that small in the pharmacy. Plus, with travelling with a baby, I am hoping to get a bottle of almond milk on board. Worst case, I have to leave it, but will they really make me leave baby supplies behind since the plane doesn't have any on board? Hmmm...
Other thoughts are fresh fruit eaten whole, just eat simply while travelling. Use a salad spinner to dry your salad and it stays fresh longer. Put dressing in a small bottle (less than 100 ml!) and only pour on when ready to eat. Trail mix. Raw muesli bars and cookies. Raw cereal to be eaten like trail mix instead of with milk. Fruit leather.
It is my understanding that you can take any food on board but the liquid is restricted. If you have other info, please let me know!
Hope this helps...I am looking for better ideas, too!
Oh, and bring an empty water bottle with you. Once past security checkpoints, ask a restaurant to fill it from the tap. I know, crazy that we can't bring our own...we have drink tap with who knows what in it or expensive bottled water from toxic plastic containers that are also just extra trash. Pick your option!
We flew from the east coast to the west coast last December. I packed one rolling carry on suitcase full of fruit (apples, oranges, clementines, dates, raisins, trailmix, and some nuts.) I was allowed to bring one personal item (i.e. purse, laptop, etc) with my carry-on. I opted for a small backpack instead of a purse. I put the essentials from my purse into one of the pockets, then I filled this bag with ripe bananas. They were the easiest fruit to peel and eat on the plane.
I would also follow Stephani's suggestion and bring an empty bottle in your carry on and then fill it after making it past security. We also did the same. I was able to carry a salad on the plane for my return flight. If your fruit or veggies are fresh, you won't need a cold pack. It won't hurt them to be at room temperature until you can eat them, or arrive at your destination and put them in a fridge.
i flew from spain to portugal a couple of weekends ago and brought a salad with dressing in a separate container, it was delish. but they took my fork!! so you have to bring a plastic one or chop sticks or something, depending on what you're eating, although i'm not sure that they wouldn't take those away, too. (am i really going to hijack a plane full of people with a pair of chopsticks?!) i just got a plastic fork somewhere after i passed security.
That's too funny. I've brought plenty of food in my luggage with cold packs, I just explain my medical situation and I've always gotten through. I've always brought raw nuts and dried fruit with me on planes even when I was SAD. For the flight I brought manna bread and fresh fruit or a chunk of raw cabbage even when I wasn't raw. I don't think I'll ever try to bring raw dairy on a plane, they'll really think I'm a terrorist then. The empty water bottle everyone's talking about sounds great. I will do that next time.
