Raw Food & Your THYROID..??

Hi everyone : )

So Ive been mostly vegan for most of my life and then in January of this year, while at the Optimum Health Institute, I discovered the power of a raw food diet. At the time, I was super sick and exhausted from Adrenal Failure and Hypothyroidism, after many years of stress... But after 1 week on wheatgrass, I felt better than I'd felt in 3 years!

So my question is -- can raw food heal Hypothyroidism?

Because there are many studies that show that RAW broccoli, kale, cabbage, spinach, yams, and a few other cruciferous veggies actually SUPPRESS the thyroid gland... Soy and all oils also do, except for extra virgin olive oil, and coconut oil -- which actually stimulates the gland..

I'm currently treating my Hypothyroidism with acupuncture, yoga and a prescribed medication called Armour from my Integrative Physician.. Im not into taking pills, but at least the Armour that I'm taking is the natural alternative (it's pretty much dried thyroid gland from pigs), as most people take a synthetic version.

Id like to get off the medication totally and Id like to know if there are other natural ways to heal myself...

I'd love to hear your thoughts, input....

Thanx!

Jade

I've read that there really isn't conclusive proof about goitrogens, except maybe for soy. I'm still choosing to eat them in moderation. Have you ever had an iodine excretion test? I had one a couple of months ago and my levels were very low. The experts in this subject say that over 90% of their patients test low. It's a HUGE deal!
Apparently the RDA is set way too low and most of our topsoil is stripped of iodine. Our RDA is 200mcg. - Japanese people consume an average of 8-12,000 mcg.'s per day (that's 8-12 mg's).
Also, many of us have toxic levels of fluoride, chlorine and bromine in our systems, all of which compete with iodine and clog up the thyroid hormone receptors. These issues are often not being addressed in thyroid treatment. Here's a website where you can read more about it:
http://www.drbrownstein.com/
Please read his blog archives. His books on iodine and thyroid disorders are great- I learned so much.
Also, you may want to read "Adrenal Fatigue" by David Wilson. Hypothyroid and adrenal fatigue go hand-in-hand.
Here's an interesting chart comparing thyroid and adrenal symptoms:

I do believe you can heal your endocrine system with raw food. That's why I'm doing it. I've started acupuncture, also, and I'm adding maca and a couple of supplements from Quantum Nutrition -the Adrenal Formula and the Xeno Detox (to detox the receptor sites and supply iodine). Gabriel Cousens uses these supplements in his practice. I trust the quality.

Thank you so much. I thought that Dr Rinnd chart was no longer available. I needed it to help someone the other day. I'm bookmarking it to show them.

How would one know if their adrenals were shot? Would I have to go to a doctor? I went to one who said my thyroid was low, but I don't want to take their medication(Armour). I'm trying to avoid going back to doctors!!

Here's a chart of symptoms:
http://www.drrind.com/scorecardmatrix.asp

Some of the major signs are:
low blood pressure (feeling dizzy or light-headed when getting up from sitting or laying)
Sensitivity to bright light and sunlight
hypogylcemia
fatigue
Heat intolerance

Here's a nifty test you can do:
Get a flashlight and a mirror go in a darkened room. Let your eyes adjust to the dark. Next, look in the mirror and shine the flashlight into your eye from the side. Now, watch your pupil contract. If your adrenals are weak, your pupil will begin to open back up a little and then try to contract again. It will sort of go back and fourth, opening and closing.
A healthy person's pupil will hold the contraction for at least 40 seconds. When the adrenals are weak, the iris weakens and can't hold a proper contraction, so the pupil starts to open back up. This is what causes the light sensitivity symptom- the pupil opening back up and letting a little too much light in.

Thyroid problems abound in my family. I had some issues with mine as well when I started raw, but after visiting a Chinese doctor who told me what was "hot" and "cold" (in the chinese way) I started to eat mainly "hot" things such as spices, ginger, durian, avocado, and so on. I am not sure how "scientific" all of this is, because it is not based on technical studies, but basically I am much more balanced now. Now that my lymph system is healed I can eat pretty much anything raw again.

Just thought I would share my thoughts. A lot of my cousins are on thyroid pills too and it's no fun.

Durian and avocado, I with I had your Chinese doctor. Mine is afraid of raw food, but sees I make 'unusual' progress on it, so can't do anything to change my diet. It's a shame the cooked idea has been so indoctrinated to so many peoples and professions.

I just started going to an acupuncturist, and, as she's Chinese, I don't think I'm going to tell her that I'm eating raw. Luckily, she didn't give me a hard time about not eating meat, like one I had in the past. Oh- here's something interesting- I have a fab book of Chinese medicine and I was looking up food cures for anemia and hypothyroid and they were both listed under the same organ deficiency (kidney-yang, if anyone cares)- I knew they had to be related! Anyway, one of the food cures for both conditions is walnuts, which I've been craving like craaazy! Our bodies really do know:)
BTW, some of the other food cures for hypothyroid were cayenne, nutmeg, fennel, white pepper, clove, dill seed, pistachio, and raspberries. I left the other "goodies" like sparrow and air bladder of shark off the list, hee hee!

Gimme some of that air bladder, as long as it's raw. Actually I tried shark last year, and it turned out to be one of the few animals I will not eat again :{

Well, headaches can come from anemia or hypothyroid, so why not?

I love cloves, walnuts and raspberries, you're right. I think my thyroid broke down from raspberry deficiency.

Raspberry deficiency- nice! I think I have that too:) I just thought of something. Walnuts, according to the doctrine of signatures, are good for the brain, which is indicated by their resemblance to the brain. Well, they also look like the thyroid (butterfly shape) when I think about it. I looked up a picture of the adrenals to see what food might resemble them (since I also have adrenal fatigue) and they look like raspberries! Adrenals are part of the kidney system in Chinese medicine, and like I said, I was looking up hypothyroid cures under the kidney deficiency category. Makes sense that all these problems stem from a similar cause. Maybe there IS something to those food cures!

I love raspberries. I was thinking of eating some the other day. I love walnuts too. Maybe, listening to the body is key. This discussion has been very informative.
