Give it to me Raw

Raw food and menstruation...

So for us ladies, I've heard some stuff about being raw and your cycle. I've heard differnt things so im going to bullet these things...and then you can give your experience or thoughts...

being raw and your period:

-you don't get it very so often?

but adding my input, i read an article that we aren't even really supposed to have a 'horrible' week b/c in the past women never got it real bad until they introduced meat or cooked foods into thier diet...which made it heavier, and worse.

-eating raw makes your cyle worse?
-doesn't make you get it at all?

there's other things but i can't remember....

but have you seen a change monthy since you've gone raw? do you get as bloated? I haven't yet b/c i just passed mine, and this is my 2nd day raw...

there are so many theories regarding menstruation ... as a schooled homeopath, every teacher had his/her take. in the raw food movement, something of the same.

there seemed to be some coherence in these theories with what i’ve notice > a trend with those people i've worked with. the more toxic, the worse the menstruation and can be more often as this might be some form of toxic release for women. the less toxic (RAW/VEGAN for example who does not smoke, drink etc and lives a more stress free lifestyle/environment) can tend to have little to no menstruations or if they do, they are lighter and almost never know they are getting it or have it except it being there (little to no cramping, PMS etc).

my third generation acupuncturist friend from china (80+ year old delight from heaven) taught me that women detox in three ways...sweat, urine/feces and menstruation (i believe that breath is included in ayurveda).

there is also something to be said for balanced hormones etc with this as well as gabriel cousens mentions cessation of menstruation when a critical minimum of body fat becomes too low due to lower estrogen levels.

so can it be also said in another way that heavy toxic load may disrupt hormone production/balance hence heavy, loss or problematic menstruation?

in simplicity, if one is fairly non-toxic (healthy) and they are assumed to be operating in a fairly optimal manner (mineralized, healthy body fat etc) then this would be a non-issue.

YOUR menstruation will be unique to you. all is and happens as it is supposed to.

so, in a sense, go with YOUR FLOW and INjoy your BEING your lovely self :)

I always had this idea that I was supposed to enjoy the pain and that somehow that it was preparing me for childbirth. Maybe not to the extent that I was experiencing them but in general, but its strange to get away from that idea that pain isn't normal and that its a result of the diet and how stressed you are. But then again, maybe childbirth isn't supposed to be so bad either. I don't know but its kind of confusing, but I don't miss the pain or feeling like death for 3 days.

I guess I was like that with birth. I figured it was a necessary pain, so it's not bad, no relief desired. Some GYN/OB's are terrible though, they don't understand birthing at all, just delivery. Maybe they're better now. I haven't spoken with one in a while.

it is said that people from remote parts of the world never exposed to processed foods birth most easily...in minutes!

weston a. price documented this (difficulty in birth) in relation to SAD (processed food) diet: http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/price/price18.html

there is more info like this regarding diet/childbirth in his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration which can be read online here: http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/price/pricetoc.html

HI,

I have been about 70/75% raw for a little under a year. I think it definitely affects our cycles. But so do many others factors like stress, general life stlye, emotions, thought patterns, etc.

One of the reasons that brought me to eating raw was my hormones. They seemed to be all over the place and I was suffering greatly from pms. I'd be having symptoms 2 weeks prior!
They have become so much better, yet it seems every month is a bit different, though over all -a lot- better. In the last few months, in comparison to how they were, I hardly notice it's coming! Yeeeeeeeeeeeah!!!

I do get them every month but there was a time several years ago when I did not for over a year. Just MHO, but I don't think that it's 'normal' or healthy to not get it regularly. I worked out a lot and probably had pretty low body fat. No one ever could figure out why they stopped. They came back suddenly after I had begun a relationship -go figure.

I do think eating raw definitely helps our hormones and the pain associated with our cycles!!
Here's to Raw! : )

Before going raw my period lasted 7 days, I used to take a day off work on day 2 due to severe cramping and heavy flow (I couldn't get out of bed). I've been high raw for 2 years and my period is about 5 days, no PMS, no cramps, ok flow first two days and very light another 3-4 days. I can definitely tell the difference: the more raw you are, the lighter your period. I used to "feel" my period coming - not anymore. Personally, I can tell the difference and raw is much better :)

I'm having the problem of NOT getting my period at all, because my body fat levels have dropped too low. Apparently maca helps with regulating menstruation?

From my understanding maca can help balance hormones...but be carefull, too much can increase your labido! I've been using it but I only use an 1/8th tspn in my green smoothie for about 2.5 weeks or so prior to my cycle. It's something you need to test out and see how you feel since we're all more or less sensitive to different things. Do you work out a lot? I'm pretty sure that can be a reason to not get it at all : )

yep yep moderation seems to be the key to EVERYTHING!
And yes, I am very active--Jivamukti yoga every day and I walk everywhere.

Well, when I was detoxing on raw they disappeared for about a year I think. After 6 years raw they are much more regular and I don't notice any extreme pms or anything, just a desire for chocolate at various points in the cycle and they usually last about 3-4 days. They are lighter when not eating nuts or seeds. Leslie Kenton did a study on this and found that women who didn't eat nuts or seeds would stop having periods. Not that I'm advocating not eating those foods.

If I eat nuts/seeds during the month my period will require a sanitary product- when I eat light my period requires nothing- I hardly notice it and last month it lasted 1.5 days. Nuts and seeds- 3 day period.

haaa!!! Mine has always been like 2-3 days with the first day being full blown flow! then quickly fades. I noticed that it is pretty much the same ecxept it lingered from nothing to a tiny bit for a ew more days. However cramping is hugely!!! reduced : )
