Give it to me Raw - Raw Food Community

France

Hey everyone,
I am going to France in a couple of weeks and obviously I cannot take my blender with me to make green smoothies or my own huge salads. I know there are plenty of open markets and juice bars -- in Paris at least. I was planning on getting my green drinks in via juice bars at least once a day. However, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for like one or two supplements i should take with me. I already have my stash of MSM ready to go and I know spirulina would be good, but I don't want to take like five million bottles with me. So either one or two that are the most important or a comprehensive one that would give me a good shot of everything. Hope this is clear! Thanks.

P.S. Does anyone know the raw food situation in France? I haven't been to Europe in years and when I did go I was on a SAD diet and all I basically ate was french fries and steak and salad. oh and copious amounts of real spanish hot chocolate.

Thanks!

As far as I am aware, there is not a big raw food scene in France, but yes, the markets are amazing! So much good quality fresh produce.

Orkos are based in France, the instincto raw food company http://www.orkos.com/home_EN.php (They sell tropical fruit plus lots of not vegetarian things!)

Hi Zoe,
Do you know of any raw restaurants in Berlin? I'm going there in about a month and can't seem to find any online.
Thanks for any help or advice you can give me!

No idea about Berlin. Although the Germans are al about beer and sausage, there is a very vibrant holistic health scene in Germany. Why not start a thread here and on goneraw, I am sure there will be some German rawies who can help you. Also why not try emailing the more well travelled raw gurus, they may have been over there, or have contacts there which they could give you.
Good Luck, I hope you don't have to eat the sausage!!

If you can read German, see http://www.die-wurzel.de/ - it's the website of a German raw food magazine, and it looks like they have a shop, maybe you could contact them to see if they know about an restaurants.

I really have nothing to contribute to this thread, but since French menus are known to have cheese in most dishes, I wonder if they have some good varieties of nut cheese. Let me know when you get back.

I also don't have anything particular to contribute - just wanted to say that I am also going to France (on Friday!), and I'm really nervous about getting food.. I am going to be WWOOFing (working on several organic farms in return for food and shelter), and I'm a bit worried about getting enough greens and such.. but yes, good luck!

Farmers market and produce are abundant there, so you should have no problem finding good food.

A little about the culture: take your own bag and expect to bag your produce yourself. When I went last, there were no bags at all provided at the check line. Everyone brings their little baskets or has boxes in the car.

Taking a blender would do you no good. It's a different type of electric current and the plugs are also different. If you want, you can probably by one there is your stay is long enough that you feel you need it.

I took some green powder that I mixed with water in a glass every morning. Not my prefered option, but it worked.

I did not go to Paris, I stayed in Brittany, so I cannot speak to big cities. I found the green selection to be less varied than what I can find here in the States. Again, that was country side. Paris might be different.

Also, everyone was absolutely charming except in the business sector. People do not have the service mentality that you are acustomed to here, so be aware. Cashiers are not there to insure you a pleasant shopping experience, they are there to check you out and take your money. I'm not being mean, I am French and grew up in that culture.
Like I said, people outside the immediate service / business industry are charming and pleasant, including anyone related to tourism.

Another thing -lunch time is sacred. If you must disrupt someone's meal, you better be apologizing or you'll get yourself told a few choice words. ;-)

My family and I had a great time. I hope you enjoy your stay as well.
