The definition of a REAL detox...and how to know you are successfully cleansing

We've all seen them, tried them, heard about them. You know, those wonder detox pills/packages/programs that will help you lose weight and increase your energy. They advertise the benefits of living off of certain foods or liquids for anywhere from one day to a few weeks and talk about how you are ridding yourself of old toxins that could be ruining your health/waistline/energy. Some of these products and programs can be helpful, however true detoxification occurs only when waste is not only stirred up by leaving out damaging foods or taking herbs, but when it is eliminated and removed from the body. How can our bodies actually detoxify i.e. rid themselves of toxins, unless the toxins actually leave the body? And I'm talking actually visually seeing it come out...that's right, down the toilet bowl.

If you are not seeing huge amounts of waste come out of your body, especially through your bowel movements, you are only experiencing a potential detox or potential cleanse. Waste might be getting shaken up inside your body and getting ready to leave your body, but unless it does physically exit your body it is still only a potential cleanse and not a real cleanse. Once the waste actually leaves your body you have achieved detox!

The problem is that years and decades of old gunk that has been sitting deep within your tissues does not always easily exit the body naturally through the elimination channels. In fact, the waste can be so old, so toxic and so heinous that we need to do everything we can to assist this foreign matter to be removed from our bodies, leaving your body cleaner, more pure and a whole lot healthier than before. Once this is achieved the weight loss, increased energy, glowing skin and an improved sense of wellbeing can follow. If we manage to stir up the old toxic waste through a cleaner diet or by taking herbs but it is not removed from the body, it will only be reabsorbed into the tissues potentially causing mayhem in the form of unpleasant symptoms while it is circulating the system, and it will then resettle deep within the body. Naturally this does not improve our internal terrain at all and in fact only causes unnecessary discomfort. What a waste of time, effort and discomfort for nothing!

So how do you ensure you experience REAL body detoxification? By doing what I have already said and employing any methods available to help your body get the junk out through your elimination channels. The bowel is your number one elimination ally. If you are on a detox or cleanse, or just cleaning up your diet consistently as a lifestyle change (the latter being the ideal as it is long-term results we want), you want to be paying attention to your bowel movements. If you are not having big eliminations and more of them than before cleaning up your diet, then you need to consider what you can do to support your bowels to get the rest out. And I assure you that even if it's not coming out naturally it is still there - it just means it's waiting to be released or re-absorbed. I know which I prefer to happen! This is where bowel cleansing in the form of enemas and colonics comes in and why these tools are so beneficial and even vital in a cleansing regime, particularly if you are committed to leading the healthiest and most vibrant life possible. The sense of wellbeing you will gain from a series of colonics is undeniable and well worth getting past any initial mental blocks you might have against the idea of bowel cleansing. As a colon hydro-therapist myself I can tell you that it is becoming more and more the "in" thing as people from all walks of life are wising up to the benefits!

Other ways you can support real detox is through dry skin brushing daily, deep sweating through exercise and/or saunas (especially infrared saunas as they penetrate much deeper into the skin layers and pull out the toxins), Epsom salt baths and plenty of deep breathing - the lungs are one of our main elimination channels after all.

thanks for this post! I agree...as soon as I started doing distilled water enemas I started feeling even better and look forward to getting a few colonics as well to deep-clean my system. I'm not sure I will ever get into all the herbal cleansing as I feel that it's just adding more "junk" to the system. Right now it's my opinion that the best way to assist our bodies in cleansing is merely physical - colonics and enemas.
