Give it to me Raw

I want to start doing it! How do I start?

Here are the details: I live in house with a backyard in Arizona. I will be moving in December so I don't wanna plant anything in the ground. Just pots for now.

Any directions? Is it different growing in the hot desert than it is in more temperate places? I am looking to have vegetables and fruits and herbs as well.

Thanks!

goldendreams- Yeah its too hot to grow right now. I am going to grow seeds indoors though and then around september-october; transplant them.

Angus - good luck with it!

GOOD ON YOU ALL - WHO GARDEN FOR FOOD. Just keep reading and searching google and swapping tips.

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO BE REALLY SUCCESSFUL GROWING WATER MELONS.
Apparently they need loamy, sandy soil and love pot ash.
I have clay soil which is bad for drainage etc... so i think i'm going to have to bring in some loamy soil and sand.

i made a box garden that has worked well. i put a sun shade over it, and that has helped a lot. the monsoons have torn it up lately though. :( but i would love the put in an additional box garden soon. i recommend waiting until maybe october when it is a little cooler in order to plant.

Maybe you could put a ad on craigs list that you are looking for vegan compost or soil. Organic usually means cow manure. You could hook up with some other cool vegan gardeners that way too.

Thanks for the neat tips all! Brooke, I will grow them from seeds; that does sound like it would be very rewarding watching them sprout and grow. I'll start small with a couple and go from there. Should be great fun and a new hobby and another way to connect with nature as well...

Check out a local nursery - they will be able to point out which plants grow better in your climate and offer tips as well. I grow quite a bit in pots (in Cali) and pot growers (hee!) need to remember that plants grown in pots dry out much quicker than plants grown in soil... good luck and happy gardening!

See where you can source some good quality seeds and start working on growing seedlings to get ready to plant once you move or into pots, I find gardening so much more rewarding (and cost effective) when you grow from seed. Can be a bit technical, you'll need to learn a little about soil pH and nutrition what the needs of individual plants are (water, light etc.) and ofcourse compost, I love compost! I started by growing just one or two things at a time and really aquanting myself with them. I eat many beetroots and carrots so I started with them, got pretty good and added green leafys, now herbs. Such a worthwhile and rewarding thing to do. Good Luck.

Have you heard of hydroponics or aquaponics? This would be a really good method for you if you don't want to plant anything in the ground since the plants don't grow in dirt. Also, the plants tend to grow a lot quicker and it saves a lot of space depending on how you set it up. Just this past weekend my boyfriend and I visited an organic hydroponic farm and it was quite amazing! If you haven't already looked into it you might want to give it a chance. :)

Good luck!

I ust bought some humates for that purpose. It ws 3.00 for a small bag. Yu're supposd to use a teaspoon per smallish pot. I think it depends on what you want to grow lik cucumbers need a lot of water but like well drained soil. Tomatoes like to be planted next to basil in moister soil. You could do baby lettuces and spinach in pots.

Mulch on the top keep in moisture is important and watering early in the morning or at night is better.

Sounds like an awesome project!.
