Fit and Raw

The lemon is both a small evergreen tree native to Asia, and the tree’s yellow fruit. The fruit is used for culinary and non-culinary purposes throughout the world – primarily for its juice, though the pulp and rind are also used. Lemon juice is about 5% to 6% (approximately 0.3 M) citric acid, which gives lemons a sour taste, and a pH of 2–3.

The average lemon contains approximately 3 tablespoons (50 mL) of juice. Allowing lemons to come to room temperature before squeezing (or heating briefly in a microwave) makes the juice easier to extract. Lemon juice is also used as a short-term preservative on certain foods that tend to oxidize and turn brown after being sliced, such as apples, bananas and avocados, where its acid denatures the enzymes that cause browning and degradation.

Benefits of Lemons

  • Lemon leaves off alkaline residues in the body, making it useful in all symptoms of acidosis.
  • Lemon contains citric acid, which can be effective in treating acne. The vitamin C found in citrus fruits is vital for that healthy glowing skin while its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria known to cause acne.
  • Lemon balm has a calming effect and therefore may be able to help remove fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, anxiety, nervousness, and tension.
  • Lemons contain healthy amounts of minerals like iron, copper, potassium, and calcium. Potassium in an important component of cell and body fluids helps control heart rate and blood pressure.
  • To remove tough food stains from plastic and light-colored wooden cutting boards- Slice a lemon in half, squeeze the juice onto the soiled surface, rub, and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with water.
  • Whiten fingernails- Rub a wedge on the surface of your nails.
  • Shine the interior of copper cookware- Sprinkle a lemon wedge with salt, then scrub.
  • Brighten laundry whites- Add 1/2 cup lemon juice to the wash cycle of a normal-size load.

I recently tried some Meyer Lemons ....all I can say is wowzer :)

They're a cross of a mandarin orange an a lemon .... they have a wonderfully complex flavor.

Cool beans. Lemons are useful little fruits! The rinds are also great to use as a deoderant and for cleaning your bathtub :)
