If you want some rockin' raw chocolate and you also want to eat mono and totally unprocessed.
- How about giving the Chocolate Sapote a whizz ?
Chocolate Sapotes, also known as Diospyrus digyna, grow in warm climates.
They are native to Mexico and Central America.
The Choc Sap needs to be eaten when nice and saggy baggy.
This fruit is not very often found in Supermarkets, because many people do not know how to eat it. It is sold under ripe as when it is ripe it does not transport- so squishy is it!
Then if it is eaten unripe (like the Astringent Persimmon to whom it is related) it tastes awful!!! Enough to put you off for life.
To understand just how toxic it is unripe, when unripe it is used as fish poison in the Phillipines.
Maybe better to go vegan and save the Spaotes 'til they are ripe!!
Chocolate Sapotes are just coming into season in South East Queensland; we are fortunate to have a friend who has a small orchard of this delicious fruit.
My four year old boy has had two for his breakfast this morning!
