nyu celebrating earthweek:

so last night i had dinner out of a garbage with adam, spokesman of the freegan movement. vegan chili and steamed veggies (i'm still alive). i also picked up three kumquats and a banana at trader joe's. and a lot of tomatoes at gristede's. free strawberries somewhere else too.
when we lined up all the good produce we had found: 8 artichoke hearts, bags of baby carrots, heaps of cherry tomatoes, broccoli, really good pain quotidien bread and bagels from bagel bob's, a dented box of cereal, onions, shallots--i felt it was a bittersweet moment. on the one hand, i'm sooooo happy that it's free. but on the other hand, why is this beautiful, unblemished produce being thrown out? animals killed for no reason, trees cut down just to be thrown into a landfill? most of the time, it's because they don't have enough room on the shelves.
stores overbuy for the illusion of abundance. and big chains often throw out more than they sell. conclusion: if you are buying your food, you are paying too much!
