Give it to me Raw

Today, I realized that my past failures with weight loss may have a lot to do with my intentions. I noticed that every single time I've decided to start a detox or new fitness regime, my reason were always something like me wanting to look so good that I turn heads, or because I want attract the man of my dream, etc. Never has my reason been purely for the sake of doing something good for my body. Imagine that... to desire to be in the best health/fitness level possible simply because I love myself... What a concept.

I was reading a post by Dhrumil where he featured the video of Jill Bolte Taylor's stroke experience. I thought it was so inspiring that I've decided to post it here. If you haven't watched this video yet and you have about 20 minutes to spare, then I invite you to kick back, relax and enjoy. :)

I live in Southern California where the emphasis on the superficial (fake books, lips, etc) is MUCH higher than in other places I've lived and visited. On the one hand, it makes it easier for me to create a healthy/fit lifestyle. On the other hand, I'm constantly battling to keep the appearance-oriented attitude from infecting my daughters, and sometimes even myself.

We are all, to some extent, the product of our cultures, I guess. I doubt I would've caught my boyfriend's attention if I met him at my heaviest weight. But frankly, I didn't deserve him at time. I was at my heaviest weight BECAUSE I wasn't loving myself--no way I could've loved him.

I wish you more and more success on your journey. You're well on your way just by being more self-aware than the average bear.

Hi Ashley and Wisdom, thanks so much for your comments. :)

Ashley - that is a great idea.... I need to find something other then food that I can focus on or have a love affair with. I tend to be a Jaqueline of all trade, so it's a matter of figuring out what I'm most interested in.

Wisdom - I'm right there with you. I look forward to when good health will become a familiar presence in my life.

unable to see the film at work and my home computer is deceased. Loved your blog though and I too am a flirt with raw food. Looking to develop a love affair with health and drop the love affair with food.

I grapple with this so very frequently. There is absolutely no reason that we are not able to love ourselves. I believe that I am, and I am sure that you are, a good person who deserves self-love. And part of this self-love is physical nurturing, I used to think this was eating cake because I deserved it. It's tricky to reframe it in your mind that cake is really just toxic and that there are non-toxic cakes, they are just a little more radical and a bit trickier too! But they are a gift to your body and soul. I have a personal and familial history of obesity and I think some people take easier to raw when their relationship with food is more straightforward. Mine is a torrid love affair, and I feel like you might be able to identify with this concept. Maybe finding another torrid love affair is helpful - a new reading obsession, music obsession, raw cheffing obsession (but do you think a food-related one is counter productive? Likely, eh?), a being-active obsession. If you are a naturally obsessive and "100% all the time"person when you find something that fascinates you, I think using this personality trait to our advantage is really key in raw. Become a guru, if not to others than in your own head, it can never hurt. And gurus have a lot of love, for themselves and for each other. dig?

I think there's something missing here lol. Eating well and taking care of our body is important, but if our merit runs out and our negative karma takes over, it doesn't matter how well we eat. Anne Wigmore was a long time raw foodist, and she died…
