Give it to me Raw

UGH I'm feeling so defeated today. I have a feeling this has a lot to do with my period- it's really kicking my butt, and I didn't want to take medicines anymore, but I HAD to take ibuprofen to get me through my work day because my low back pain was just too intense.

When I came home from work, I was just hot and tired and cranky (it's over 100 here today and my a/c broke in my car) so I took a two hour nap. When I woke up, my pain had returned FULLY so I took some more ibuprofen and after taking my little doglet out, I sat down to look at my new book my great friend Cyndi gave me, Raw Food : 100 Recipes to Get the Glow by the people that own Pure in NYC.

The photos looked so great! The salads especially were calling to me, but I didn't have any lettuces in the house, plus some of my essential food making tools were over at Cyndi's. It was too hot to go to the store or go pick up my equipment. I decided to make a soup in my food processor.

I had been planning this soup for a while- like a gazpacho, with red peppers, juicy tomatoes, and a bit of cauliflower, topped with corn, green onions & avocado. Sadly, I was out of avocado so I substituted raw cashews. I took one bite and... BLEH! It just tasted so watery and bland. I think this had to do with the produce... I got it at the Asian market and it just seemed a little flavorless this time. Also, the garlic & ginger were way too strong. Yuck. I don't like to throw things away, but after a few bites, I thought my stomach was going to rebel, so I poured it down the disposal.

Maybe a nice juice for dinner, then. I munched on some cashews while I made a juice with the rest of the produce- a Fuji apple, an orange, 1/4 of a lime, half a bunch of spinach, a little ginger, and a tomato. Again, BLEH! Maybe my period has my taste buds off! The ginger was overpowering again, the spinach tasted too green for me (which isn't usually the case), the apple was watery and I could barely taste it at all. I feel so defeated.

I drank half of it, and the other half is sitting here, giving me the stink eye. My appetite has all but disappeared since I starting eating raw, and I don't know what that's all about. I don't think I'm getting enough to eat each day and after days like today I don't even want to do any more experiments. Sometimes I've been dizzy or "weak" feeling. I don't want to confess this to any of my friends or coworkers because they all already mostly think I'm crazy.

I hate to sound so negative because I really am loving raw but I guess I just need some nice go-to things to whip up on a weeknight. I just got tired of munching on broccoli & cauliflower florets with carrot sticks. Probably should stick to some of those nice salads I saw in my new book- the dressings look flavor packed. And I'll definitely get my produce from the farmer's market next week- it's bound to be more flavorful.

I'm going to go see if I can save this juice by juicing another orange into it :)

Lizz- Thanks! This is great information, I didn't know. :)
Renee- Thank you, that's exactly what I'll do from now on! I made sure to have all my favorite salad ingredients on hand today :)
Sara- Thanks, I will definitely do that, I know there is a market near me during the week, too. And you were right, today was better! :)
Liam- That's a thought! I think you're right. We're just so programmed to think we need to eat every four hours or we will die or something! Hehe :)

You have the right idea by keeping your kitchen stocked with all the good, healthy food you love ... try to get to a farmers market as soon as you can and try schedule time to shop (if your work schedule permits). Check out your farmers market association online and see if/where there are other markets you might be able to get to on other days of the week. I schedule a visit to my aunt (who lives in the next town) on days when I know their market is going, so I can shop 2 days a week instead of just one.

And then there's the old adage, "Try, try again..." Best of luck to you - today is a new day...

Stick with it, I feel your pain! I second Lizz's comments 100%. Maybe you could try just staying stocked on all your favorite salad stuff and use that as your base to begin with; let your experiments be the bonus/side dishes, and you could even make them right after you have eaten so that you don't find yourself starving with a less than favorite new recipe. You're doing great!

For one, you should feel delighted that you are getting your period at this time, as the full moon was yesterday, which means that your body is becoming synced up with universal rhythms. Also, it is very common to loose ones appetite during your period because the body wants to use its energy during is greatest time of cleansing. As womyn, we are so lucky to have an extra cleansing process at our disposal. Don't stress about taking the pain pill. Keep with eating raw foods, and living in a meaningful way and in time, those period pains will be a thing of the past. Hang in there!
