Magnificent mangoes

Yes, the title sounds corny but I couldn't help it. It is mango season now and over the past few months I have been in awe of all the huge, flowering mango trees all around city and country. Once I heard that mango trees have a special sort of energy that can even replenish and cure a dying person if you hug them a certain way. I don't know whether it is true or not, but they are certainly have a particular kind of presence I can't exactly put into words. For those of you who never saw one face… Continue

JF days 15-17

Day 15 was a major detox day, both physically and emotionally. I woke up with pains all over, as if my bone were poking me from the inside out. I had been feeling a little of that for a few days already, but that day it was full-blown. Intuitively, I juiced some aloe from my herb garden, along with some cucumber. It tasted awful (well, not the taste so much, it's just that I hate that gooey texture!), but in a few minutes my body was tingling all over and I started to feel better. Afterwards I d… Continue

And now what?

I had planned a short, 10 day juice feast because we will soon be traveling to Canada - I thought it would be too complicated to maintain the JF while traveling by plane, etc. Well, the 9th day arrived and I felt lost. I KNEW I would probably start binging on my favorite Brazilian foods. I KNOW I want to change and grow beyond this point. On the other hand, several things scare me. One is that I'm afraid of getting too skinny. High raw brought down to my "ideal weight", but I think I look weird… Continue

A raw carnival day (JF day 8)

I did it! I spent a day at the local (Olinda) carnival festivities while raw and survived!!

Honestly I expected more to it. I thought old, bottled-up feelings would surface (as I've said before, my dad died right after carnival, 15 years ago), but nothing happened. It was actually a pretty bland afternoon, at least emotion-wise. Besides, although this is a situation where there are many people that are all about being happy and dancing, there are lo

Juice feasting and carnival

Carnival is here. It is a huge thing in Brazil – not only the samba from Rio, but so many different sounds and rhythms, especially here in the Northeast. In fact, my city has the largest carnival parade in the world, which gathers about 1.5 million people every year (I’ve only been to that one once or twice! Too much of a crowd for me!! :))

JF days 4-6.

I can't believe I just started my 7th day!! I feel so good sometimes I wonder if I'm really detoxing... :)

Let me describe what happened during the last three days. On days 4-5 I went on a short trip with a childhood friend and her younger siblings, to a nearby city/beach. I didn't take anything along and drank a lot of rejuvelac before leaving. The first day we spent mostly at the beach, so I drank fresh coconut water all day long. In the evening we went to the house of my friend's aun… Continue

Juice Feast - Day 03

This is how my first day out of home looked like:
- Lots of water (still very thristy all the time)
- 400 ml spinach-basil-pumpkin juice
- About 600 ml fresh coconut water
- 1.2 l orange juice
- 400 ml pineapple-mint juice
- 800 ml rejuvelac

Slept six hours and woke up late (did not exercise in the morning).

Detox symptoms: itchy scalp, a bit of a runny nose, a bit of diarrhea.

Had some cool dreams before waking up in the morning - things are s… Continue

Juice Feast - Day 02

Woke up feeling no hunger at all and debated whether I should go out for my morning bike/walk. I like to do this around 4:30 am when this part of the world is still asleep. Everything is dark and silent and there's a whole different kind of energy. Then all the birds start celebrating the day and the sun starts to come up and everthing changes.

I drank some of the leftover water with lemon juice and honey and then biked for a half hour and walked for another half hour. On the way back I… Continue

Juice Feast - Day 01

Day 01 was great! During the morning I felt quite euphoric. Then later I had some mood swings and felt a bit irritable. By evening I was feeling sort of... weird (in a good sense), like I was a bit drunk or something like that. A lot of thoughts going through my head, but not too coherent - maybe I needed more juice. Another strange thing was that I was thristy all the time, even though I had all that liquid!!

Exercise: 15 min bike in the evening.

What I drank:
- Water from… Continue

It's finally time to juice feast!!

Ok, this is my first blog post here, finally! :)

I just read Heidi's (Raw Food, Right Now) post on her juice feast. Then I looked at the fresh organic produce I just bought and thought... tomorrow I will begin!!!!

The truth is, it didn't really start that way... Ages back when I was a teenager and had never even heard of raw foodism, I discovered a book that had been my dad's, called "The Juiceman's Power of Juicing". It talked about juicing and brought several recipes, etc. No… Continue
