Safest Non-Organic Foods for my Budget

I'm collecting unemployment right now, which means I earn about what I'd be making if I worked a minimum wage job. I have to really watch my pennies now, so organic foods are not at the top of my grocery list these days. I've read several articles about non-organic produce that don't retain as many pesticides, making them safer bets for penny pinchers like me. This Creative Commons-licensed list ranks produce by the amount of pesticides found in them. The topmost foods have the most pesticides w… Continue

Being a Fool in 2009

Are you familiar with the Fool of the Tarot card deck? The Fool represents new beginnings unfettered by the past. The Fool has no real goal and no preplanned route- in fact, in the Ryder-Waite deck, he's about to unwittingly step off a cliff. OOPS! In some ways I see myself as the Fool for 2009: I want to step off the cliff, because I want to leave behind my old baggage of judgments, ideas and analyses, falling into a new world that I learn about as I experience it. In this new world I have no… Continue

Ode to my Raw Twitter Buddies

You make me laugh when I'm feeling blue
You applaud my silly raw twaikus
You read my blogs and make comments
About my newest raw experience

And when a tear or two I've shed
You point to better days ahead
You do funny things like impersonate Spock
You crazy Twitter friends sure do rawck!

You make up silly words and sounds
And post the best juice recipes around
You send me links to funny videos
That make green smoothies squirt from my nose… Continue

Hypothyroid: Some Raw Foods to Eat and Some to Avoid

I've been researching vegetables to avoid if you have hypothyroid or low thyroid levels. Vegetables that have goitrogens can inhibit thyroid function. It's important to note that most doctors don't recommend tContinue

Started My Modified Juice Feast Today!

Well, after a lot of planning, preparing and talking, I have finally returned to 100% raw by embarking upon my modified juice feast. I am very excited about using all that I have learned about raw nutrition and my own health issues to explore a raw diet that works for me. I sti… Continue

16 Cups of Green Juice a Day- Quite a Goal!

I've been re-reading the juicefeasting.com site and realizing that I really need to step up the amount of juices I'm drinking daily to be prepared for when I start the program. As of last week I was drinking 2 cups first thing in the morning, 6 more at work, and 2 more at home. I've just added 2 more cups before going to bed. Now I just have to squeeze two more in. That is a LOT of juice. I wonder if anyone else is drinking more than 2 cups at a time. That's usually all I am hungry for at any ti… Continue

I Need Help! My Green Smoothies Ain't No Nectar of the Gods

Today's smoothie had celery, fennel, carrots, apple, pear, ginger, romaine, chard and spinach. I don't know if it really tasted better than yesterday's smoothie or if I am just tolerating green smoothies better, but I actually drank two mason jars full. I couldn't drink the last one again - I copped out and had a sandwich for dinner!! But hey- I'm getting there. One day at a time, they say.

I did discover a third trick (the first was adding fresh squeezed lime juice): adding cold water… Continue

LaLanne+VitaMix+Veggies+Fruit=Abundant Health!!

Photobucket This morning I used my juicer to prepare radish juice. Radishes are supposed to help balance out thyroid levels, and since I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I figured I should get into a half-cup-a-day radish h… Continue

Bought the VitaMix Today & Saved so much I got a Juicer, Too!!

I am so excited- I have been saving for a Vita-Mix for a while. I wanted to get it two years ago but never could afford it. Finally they came to Costco. I spent 200 dollars less than I'd planned, so I bought a juicer, too, for $100. I got the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer. I wasn't too worried about it being centrifugal (I think it is, at least) since I will mostly be making smoothies and getting lots of nutrients that way. If I were only depending on a juicer I would have gotten the masticating kin… Continue

Juice Feasting is More Expensive Than I thought!!

Yikes- I spent more than the predicted $9 a day for my test run at the grocery store! I got about 3.5 lbs of greens, 1 organic cucumber, a tiny piece of ginger, and some radishes for $13.50- and I still hadn't bought everything I needed for one day of juicing or smoothie-making. Please tell me it gets cheaper as Spring and Summer approach!........................... http://blog.rawodyssey.com Continue

Eight More Days to my VitaMix

I'm so excited! In 8 days I plan to have my arms around a VitaMix 5200! I'm going to start my version of juicefeasting ("smoothiefeasting") when I finally get it. Today I bought a couple of items to prepare for that: an apple corer and something to strain the smoothies so that I can make the juices too, for variety. What I really want are those nutmylk bags for straining- I hope I can find them at Wild Oats or Whole Foods. Will cheese cloth work if you bundle it up? Anyway, I'm so excited about… Continue

SO Excited About My New Raw Gadget!!

Today I put my new vegetable-chopping gadget to use: the Vidalia Chopping wizard. I'm so glad I got it!! Yes, this is a shameless plug for it, even though I'll make no money from it- haha. Anyway, I made Israeli Salad and I so thrilled that it took a fraction of the time to make the salad than it would have to chop up all that stuff with a knife and cutting board. Please check out my blog Raw Odyssey at http://blog.rawodyssey.com/ to see the product review and photos (I just moved my blog to its… Continue

Already Seeing a Postive Effect of Eating Raw

Today I had to participate in a two-hour meeting at my job. This is nothing new- I work at a creative place where we have many meetings, many of them three or four hour affairs, so this was a short one. The trouble is that when we start during or after lunch, I usually find myself nodding off, losing track, daydreaming, yawning, and otherwise suffering. I would chug coffee or other caffeinated products to no avail. Sometimes the effort of fighting my tiredness… Continue

Applying Lessons from the Past to my 2008 Raw Diet

It's been so wonderful reading all of the stories and comments people have been posting at GITMR. This community is very open-minded and welcoming, which is a blessing. My raw odyssey has been an interesting one, but thanks to the internet, it doesn't feel so strange anymore, as I see that many people have jumped on and off the raw wagon, tried different percentages of raw vs. cooked foods, and tested various permutations of a raw diet. I think most of us have concluded that there is no one raw… Continue

Hello, My Name is Allison, and I Keep Falling off the Raw Food Wagon!

Hey, I'm testing this blog application on Give it to me Raw- seems pretty cool. Might as well use it to shout that I have lapsed again on my raw journey! I have a tough time with staying raw sometimes, but I never allow myself to become totally estranged from the raw community, and that allows me to hop back on that saddle repeatedly. Being amongst other raw foodists, even virtually, is very helpful as I wind along my topsy-turvy raw odyssey. Thanks for being there, everyone!

It's actually surprisingly easy once you get the hang of it. No machete required. Shave off the husk at the pointed top close to the shell. Then poke the point of a knife in about 2 or 3 cm out from the centre and wiggle it about until it pierces ...
