The Beauty of RAW in 300 Words: A Writer's Cry for Help!

So, I've been asked to write an article about raw food for a local entertainment magazine. I was so excited about this and had so many ideas running, and then, they let me know, it was only 300 words. 300 words!!! How does one capture the idea of raw living in only 300 words? The editors want me to cover the following: List anything you think are the most interesting aspects about the trend toward going raw. Talk about why some people have started the diet and why others should start. List an… Continue

Why have I succumbed to the negativity of the dollar?!?!

So... Life's been pretty tough lately. I've finished my student teaching (which was non-paying for six months) and now due to Washoe County's budget cuts, they're not hiring any new teachers at all this year. I have gone around schools and most administrators think they'll be two years out before hiring any new teachers. I've been working toward this for so long and have sort of hit a wall. So, I've been job searching all over the place from bartending to copy editing to restaurant serving. Non… Continue

My third day of the raw challenge in Reno!

Day 3

Mmmmm today was a good day. Breakfast was a green smoothie consisting of apple, maca, coconut water, kale, and kiwi. I had some avocados with sea salt along with a TON of blueberries for lunch!

When I got home this evening, I made some flaxseed cracker mix. Here is a picture of it before it went into the dehydrator:

Then I decided to make a delicious spicy avocado soup. It

Reno's Raw Food Challenge- Day 1

Three amazing communities-- The Yogic Lounge, BohoCrush, and Võd are hosting a raw food challenge for the month of March in Reno! I've taken my time with transitioning--three months to be exact--because I wanted to slowly introduce my body to raw food. I am a food FANATIC and knew this was going to be especially tough if I just jumped right into a solely raw diet right away. Three months later, here I am, about 85% raw, and I'm making the plunge! My goal for the month of March is to make the s… Continue

Flush out the flu with lemon water?

Fever! The aches!! Cough! Stuffy nose! Thus is my current state of health :-( This couldn't all occur at a worse time either! I went into Võd today (the raw deli in Reno) and asked for some advice. I met Ben who works there, and he told me to eat much much less and try to predominantly live off of water with cayenne, ginger, and lemon. He said that the body will then flush out the toxins much easier and more intensely (meaning you may feel worse initially but the "bug" will go away much fast… Continue

Kelp Noodles

The Whole Foods in Reno doesn't sell them! I ordered them online, but for only two small packages it ended up being almost $20 including shipping. Is this a typical price for two 12oz bags? Does anyone have any ideas of cheaper ways to acquire these delicious morsels? (Teriyaki kelp noodles are my favorite!) Thanks and love, Kate :-) Continue

I'm in love

Okay, so I've tried soooo many different green smoothie variations, and to be honest, I haven't really found myself falling for any of them. I went into Võd today ( an AMAZING new raw food café in Reno!) and asked for a green smoothie. The owner Schall made me a smoothie that was the most vibrant green I had ever seen. I asked myself, why have all my green smoothies looked so dark? As soon as that smoothie hit my lips, I was in love. What could she have put in this to make my taste buds dance… Continue

I'm a little sickling! Boo!

So.....I've fallen quite ill with a bad cold and a cough. This is perfect timing, of course, as I start student teaching at a local high school bright and early tomorrow morning! Does anyone have any recipe suggestions (besides the obvious Vitamin C choice straight from our friend the orange) or any other healthy remedies that don't include taking any form of prescription drugs? I'd rather get healthy the natural way! Thanks and much love! Continue

My first dehydrator experience

Well, I've got my life back on track and tonight attempted my first bread recipe. It's in the dehydrator at this moment, and let me tell you, it smells delicious! I am one of those carb-loving folk, and knew it was going to be really tough to give up bread. Though I've heard that many raw-foodists may not own or don't find the need for a dehydrator, I knew it would be valuable so I could get my bread cravings satiated! If anyone has recipes or suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Much lov… Continue

I am Rawjuvenated!

I've always been a person who has never worried about what I ate. Growing up, I ate junk food, fast food, ice cream, you name it. Even through my college years, I drank frequently and ate anything that pretty much was set in front of me. No, I'm not obese, and I've always considered myself a relatively healthy and active person. Suddenly, however, once I reached my masters program in which I'm pursuing my dream of becoming a high school english teacher, I really started becoming more conscious o… Continue

It's very possible. 15+ years in the game, and you learn a lot, like how to reach your audience. You think he'll let me see his home in Hawaii?

I've met some hit chix on GITMR. Not satisfying in the least. Just the opposite. Most communication is self-defeating, accomplishes nothing. I would love it if people would leave me alone when I'm out and about. Anybody else?
