Yeah, those are swipes at vegans...and pretty irritating, coming from someone who seems to change his mind with every new "teacher" he comes across.

I really resonate with Anthony Anderson's sincerity. And I agree with his politics. I've seen so many films answering and dealing with issues the media won't. Anthony's very grounded, indeed, seems to me. Just last week I saw Fabled Enemies, charg...

I agree with Zoe. I find a feeling of unease in the UK. Where I live anyway there aren't really any Vegetarians let alone vegans or raw vegans! I'm still insulted by some people even now about how I should eat meat...so you can tell why I'd like t...

I would look at trying to grow bilberries. They grow very well in moist shady areas.

Does this make anyone hungry (warning, graphic vole carnage, for the squeamish it's a vole killed by a salad harvester). The overall level of suffering on your plate has only a little to do with whether you are a vegan or not. As an agronomist ca...

I don't know. I fish with lots and lots of people of all ages and backgrounds and none have an issue with killing and gutting them. These same people, I would assume, would have a problem doing the same with dolphins. I guess my point is that the...

That's the Faroe Islands, technically part of Denmark, but it's own language and culture closer to Icelandic. That pilot whale kill thing is sad for many reasons. Those whales are full of mercury and other heavy metals, leading to a high rate of b...

About Me:
I'm an advocate for local foods and you can often find me at the farmer's market, but I will admit an undying love for coconut and papaya too. I like to eat from an evolutionary perspective and learning about hunter-gatherer diets.

People deleting their accounts...

Really sad! All kinds of info have been lost because intelligent people have been scared away by the drama. What does animal rights drama teach us about health? I am here to learn about health and to support others on their health journey, not to bash meat eaters.

The world is a complex place. It's pretty hard to say which diet causes more "pain" to the world. Where was your food grown? What was cleared to make room for the cultivation? Did they use animal-based fertilizers? Traps? Pesticides?… Continue

Raw Science: Is bee pollen a good way to get protein?

Microspectrophotometric evaluation of digestibility of pollen grains

G. G. Franchi1, G. Franchi1 Contact Information, P. Corti1 and A. Pompella2

Received: 28 June 1995 Accepted: 28 October 1996
Abstract Digestibility of pollen grains of poppy (Papaver rhoeas) and hazelnut (Corylus avellana) subjected to a human-like in vitro digestion with pancreatic enzymes was evaluated. Pollens showed different types of walls. Digestibility was determined for total protein and insoluble carbohydrate… Continue

Raw Science: what do YOU want to know?

Ever saw an awesome article online that you couldn't read because it was in some expensive journal? Ever wanted to know what studies say about your favorite foods?

Well, my time as an academic is coming to a close for now, but before my subscriptions expire, here is an opportunity to pull out any info you want from nearly any journal.

Fire away!

Raw Science: Rancid fats...scary!

So far I've been delving into the science of fat rancidity. It seems like this is an area of lipid science that doesn't get enough attention, but I've found some interesting things.

Rancid fat: Rancidity is caused by oxidation or hydrolysis. The main gist of the process is that these generate highly reactive molecules and destroy vitamins. Fats with lower free fatty acid content keep better because the chemical structure of them is less easily degraded. Highly rancid fats taste unpleasant, but… Continue

Diet these days

Breakfast: Rhubarb crisp with berries, coconut, walnuts, and a dash of honey. Bee pollen shot.
Lunch: Power smoothie with berries and greens...maybe half a banana. A salad if I have time...which I usually don't these days.
Snack: Coconut chai with a dash of honey. Maybe a slice of carrot-coconut-banana-vanilla "cake."
Dinner: another power smoothie, big giant salad (70-100 grams of greens + oil + homemade vinegar + some nuts + grated veggies) and if I am really hungry a raw soup
Snack: cucumber… Continue

Well, I can relate with most of that as well. I havent been able to work for 2 months, lost my foods assitance benefits from the gov't and have serious medical debt pilling up (from hospitalizations for depression and outpatient/rehab programs). I am luckily out of my alcoholic familes house now and staying with my boyfriend. He helped buy me food today, I was so grateful... but had to make it strech by buying things like rice and beans in bulk. So, my raw is gonna be limited for a few weeks. But hopefully I'll get this job at McDonalds, just so I can feed myself and buy more amino acids for depression. :/
Sounds like you are just as determined as I am to find peace and well being :) Its a lot of work but eventually we can rewire our brains to think positively! I listen to The Power of Now a lot... and need to get back into CBT.
Right now I'm quite down but I'm accepting it and rolling with the punches. But anyway, tonight when I'm in bed and doing my though "May _____ be free of suffering and dispair" I will think of you! Feel free to message me! <3

I was just reading the raw vs. cooked discussion. 1st, I would like to say that I respect that you apologized and recognized something you need to work on. I have been raised to think negatively and act agressively and also trying to change this. It's difficult too, when you're hormones are out of balance! 2nd, you posted something about loss of libido and period. I have similar problems and attribute it to a low thyroid. Are these things that were exemplified on a particular raw diet?

I hear what you're saying. I can't think of anything in my post that 'attacked', although have to assume it's the phrase 'murdered animals' that was the problem? Equally, I should be allowed to use the phrase 'murdered animals', as that is, after all, what meat is (when I did eat meat I was always quite happy when people used it). Was it those words that were the problem?

Mellifera, I'm not sure much can be recovered from this, but...you never know. Perhaps in ways that aren't apparent right now. Thank you for the message.
