Profile Information

About Me:
We are the land, a group of people, a common vision.

The land here is young, situated on the eastern edge of the volcanic rift zone of Hawaii. This is an extremely fertile area, blessed with showers and sun. Nearby, there are thermal warm water ponds, natural steam vents, black sand beaches, and active lava flows. Just 20 miles downwind from Pangaia, the volcano goddess, Pele, is presently pouring herself into the ocean, creating the newest land on the planet.

Constant change seems to be the theme both on the Island of Hawaii and for Pangaia. Being surrounded by impermanence, we are constantly reminded of our own impermanence, our own fragility. Just down the road, the small village of Kapoho was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1960. As a result of this explosion, 3 feet of cinders fell on the area, leaving the land very rich. The original founder of Pangaia, Manis, a graduate of geology, was serendipitously born in the same year as the volcanic event that added so much fertility to the land he would later call “home.”

Just as the landforms of Hawaii are in constant flux, so the people of Pangaia come and go. Since its inception in 1991, Pangaia has hosted hundreds of visitors and residents, all coming from very different backgrounds with a wide spread of ages.

We envision unity between Earth mother Gaia and ourselves. We seek a full and complete expression of our being through work, art, and play, as well as our relationships with each other. One of the most fundamental goals at Pangaia is to move toward sustainability and harmony with our environment. Through this process, we are discovering ourselves and our nature -- cultivating an intimate bond between soil, plant, animal, human -- and crafting a landscape of harmonious resonance. Inspired by those goals, we are a mainly raw-food community and are living active permaculture.

We welcome guests, visitors, interns, work-traders, friends, and potential long-term residents who are sincerely interested. At present, we are open to potential shared ownership possibilities.

Hi Nicole, We don't need any salt at all, and in fact it's always toxic to the body. Salt is a rock, and no matter how small we smash it, it is an inorganic mineral which our bodies cannot really use. Organic sodium is needed by ever single cell ...
