Profile Information

About Me:
I think it began some time in 2007. I started off as a pescetarian for about 2 years.
I stopped eating at fast food places. I avoided meat and poultry, then I eliminated dairy products. Later on I eased off of baked foods and anything with refined flour but I continued with whole wheat flour occasionally (whole wheat bread, steamed dumplings, pharmosa). After some time, I managed to ease off of white and whole flours though I may still have some once in a long while. I also stopped eating rice (probably the hardest thing to do as a raw Middle-Eastern!)

While moving to a healthier way of eating and learning more about cooking I avoided frying and used baking or grilling instead. Soon after, I began to favor steaming over other cooking methods. Nowadays if I'm cooking I mostly use steaming or very low heat cooking.

After finishing grad school (thank you overpriced education) and moving to Saudi Arabia in June 2009, I'm gradually adopting a more raw and natural lifestyle. This has proven to be much harder to do in Saudi then back home in the USA. I'm not really trying to go for 100% raw. I'm happy being a high-raw pescatarian: I have my raw foods (fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, sprouts, grains and legumes) with the occasional minimal cooking. Yet I refuse to give up seafood so I enjoy my sashimi.

I don't have a dehydrator but I make use of my blender, mixer, & chopper tools. It would be nice to get a spiralizer and maybe a vita-mix wouldn't hurt (hint hint). I may not have the fancy raw kitchen gadgets but I make use of what I've got. ^_^
How can the community best support you in your journey? (moral support, transition advice, fitness tips, etc)
I know I'll need plenty of transition advice, tips, and tons of support since my family and the people around me don't really understand or support my lifestyle decision. Everyone in my family thinks I'm a strange little Health Nut (which is true!) especially since their diet relies on daily meat consumption and heavily fried foods. Over the course of my transition the weight dropped quickly and I became much thinner. They criticize and ridicule me for being underweight and for not eating what they call "real food" because they find this lifestyle to be too extreme and restrictive especially in social situations (eating out, social gatherings, parties, etc). I try not to let their comments bother me. As an Arab-American, it's not easy being raw or let alone vegetarian/vegan or even pescetarian.

Hi Nicole, We don't need any salt at all, and in fact it's always toxic to the body. Salt is a rock, and no matter how small we smash it, it is an inorganic mineral which our bodies cannot really use. Organic sodium is needed by ever single cell ...
