Good morning John and Spencer:

Couldn't help but notice the communication between you and Spencer and wanted to chime in briefly.

Spencer makes a good point about listening to your body and be willing to experiment. I've found that since going raw (I'm not 100 percent raw and I won't be), I've learned to listen to my body more. He's right about how many people will have different opinions about different things and if you heeded everyone's advice, you'd have nothing left to eat.

The key is to have fun with this. Certainly read up on what others have done but take it with a grain of salt and experiment because your body "knows." The longer you clean yourself internally with a dietary changeover, the more in tune you will be with your body's wants/desires/needs.

The final thing I want to add is not to beat yourself up if you eat something that's not raw or whatever. For instance, I'm at my brother's house for the holidays and his family is very into meat and potatoes. They accommodated me rather well, providing fruits and vegetables. I even brought my Vita-Mix (I'm now an affiliate with them offering free shipping through my blog if you're interested www.adversityuniversityblog.com).

On a few occasions I had what they were eating in very small portions. Yes, I had some meat. But I did not beat myself up. I was surprised that I did not get sick because I had not eaten a "significant" portion of meat since Sept 08.

When I get home, I plan to do a 5 day juice feast to "clean up" again. I did one for 3 days and was amazed at the results.

Bottom line? Go with your intuition - take what fits you and leave the rest.

John,

I'll try to keep it simple, albeit long, per your request. Here's what I've found after two years:

1.) If I actually listened to every claim about certain raw foods being bad for me, I would have no food left to eat. You've got to listen to your body, forget the dogma, keep a food-log if you are willing, and consider how YOU feel after eating certain foods. We don't know enough about the body yet to actually coach others in the specific foods they should be consuming. The goal in all this is to get people off of the obvious junk so they re-calibrate the mechanism that directly communicates with them whether a certain food works. I heard about the spinach thing last summer. I cut it out for a month. Didn't notice a difference. I put it back in, and actually felt better, my teeth got stronger from the minerals. I eat spinach often. Test on yourself.

2.) Make low-sugar, low-fat foods the mainstay of your diet. This was how I really started to make insane leaps in energy. Sugar and fat both have obvious effects on physiology; one makes you extremely alert initially, the other grounds you initially, but both result in a wave of energy that changes over time. Definitely eat sugar, definitely eat fat, and see which one your body likes more. But I can't think of any reason why high mineral, chlorophyll rich celery, tomato, cucumber soups or green smoothies and juices would not be the ideal foods for us. Grapefruits are on there too. They don't give us any up/down trips, they are loaded with water, minerals and nutrients, and they don't pull us to overeat because they don't trigger insulin reponses (yes, fat can do this too). When you make these the mainstay, you have a better base upon which you can decide what will fuel your workouts. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against eating solid quantites of fat and sugar if one is active enough. But I make sure I've put the minerals in first to see if I really need it, because often my body doesn't crave calories, it craves water and nutrients.

3.) Get into monomeals and food combining. If I ever eat fruit before a workout, it's a monomeal of melon, bananas, or apples. Food combining is as important if not more important than what you eat. I personally (not everybody!) would eat a boiled sweet potato as a mono meal without any salt or spices over a raw vegan dessert of dates and cashews blended together. Sugar and fat, when mixed for me, stay in my body for a long time, and from what I've heard, it does NOT go well for most people. The fermented and putrified matter sit in my digestive tract for days. However, had I eaten a mono meal of dates, followed by a mono meal of cashews, I would have had no problem with elimination whatsoever. Simpler is always better, especially with fruit.

4.) During transition, your digestion is not as sensitive, your metabolism is still fired up from SAD, and you may require heavier foods and even some cooked root veggies to ease the detox. Don't be hard on yourself, again, just listen to your body and do what it wants within reason. As long as you're staying away from cooked and processed dairy, meat, refined sugar, refined starch, etc., a few steamed veggies or boiled yams and sweet potatoes won't do too much harm. If you don't need them, don't eat them. But if you find the detox is too much, that would be the first thing I'd use to take a step back.

5.) Get a source of Zinc somehow. Pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, okra, whatever. It's vital for many functions, like testosterone production and muscle building, and there aren't many sources. Make sure you eat the above often.

ALRIGHT, forgive the short novel, just had a lot to say. As for your cramping, get on more minerals like the celery, cucumber, tomato soups, and you should see those clear up. And muscle breakdown, get on more greens like swiss chard, spinach if you're willing, arugula, romaine, whatever, and keep resistance training. If you don't use them, your muscles will atrophy, regardless of the food you eat.

My grandmother turned me on to this one. What about that little rock poppy segment in the middle that doesnt quite fit in with the rest of it? Its beautiful though, 80's ruled the world of great sappy songs.

We know the holiday season can be busy, with lots of parties and gatherings. Most of these events serve up sugary, artificial, and/or unhealthy foods making it especially hard to stay with a raw or vegan diet. So, come and celebrate the holidays ...
