Hey Catelyn

I dont see a need for you to take the gingko bilboa etc. If you want to keep taking a multi its up to you. Why were you taking the iron, did you have anaemia? To be honest as long as your consuming enough caloires and greens, you should get enough vitamins. And you should get enough iron.

You shouldnt need supplements if you are consuming organically and if you are consuming enough calories and variety. That having being said, if you have anaemia, it can be useful to supplement whilst improving your diet, until your levels get better. 18mg is a pretty low dose for anaemia though.

Have you looked at nutritiondata, com or cronometer to plan your diet properly to make sure youre getting enough of everything you need?

Take care

Hi Catelyn;) I've been studying for years on my own. There are lots of good correspondence courses you can take to learn about holistic health. Clayton College is one.
The East-West School of Herbal Medicine is very good and they are linked up with the American Herbalist's Guild, if you're interested in that kind of thing.

Congrats on finishing your college course early Catelyn. What were you studying?

I dont know about specific raw food retreats that dont cost anything i'm afraid. There are plenty of opportunities, but all expensive :o( You could try contacting Gina Shaw, in the UK. Her website is http://www.vibrancyuk.com/

I know she takes interns I think, and she runs retreats in spring/summer but they wont be for a while.

You could always consider wwoofing which can provide you with free food and accommodation. Fruit farms would be a good place to start. You could go anywhere in the world. It wont provide you with any intellectual knowledge abuot raw foods, but it will certainly provide you with experiential information :o) If you go somewhere near where there are friendly people from here, Im sure they would be happy to meet up with you and help you out.

Freelea, on here, is wanting to start a new retreat centre in Australia I believe, but I think its still abit of a fantasy at the moment. Hopefully it will come to fruition this year though :o)

As far as raw food info goes, I would suggest reading 80/10/10 if you havent already. I dont suggest following the menu plans in the back as they are imo, nutritionally deficient but the book itself is excellent.

My recommendations would be:

1) Make sure you plan your diet carefully in the first week or 2. Many people get overwhelmed by the idea of calorie and nutrient counting, but I promise them as I promise you, it is only for the first week or so, until you get the hang of how much you have to actually eat. Its like everything in life, once it becomes second nature, you dont need to think about it. Very quickly, your brain will be reassured that you can get enough nutrients and you can just focus on making tasty food choices having an unconscious idea of how much that will provide you with in terms of calories/nutrients.

2) Make sure you get enough calories. The number one reason people do not succeed when eating raw is because they think they are eating lots (because raw foods are so high in water and fibre, which make you feel full), but actually they havent eaten enough. Typically women need around 2000 calories, plus 600 for exercise. You can use nutritiondata.com or cronometer to work out your individual needs.

3) Make sure you get enough protein in your diet. Protein is overrated in terms of how we are sold it by western society, but it is still a crucially important nutrient, one which many people become deficient in on a raw vegan diet and experience problems. The reason for these deficiencies are typically because they havent planned their diet and so they are unaware of how much they are consuming. You need about 0.8g/protein for every kg of body weight. In particular, make sure you get enough of the amino acid methionine. You want about 10mg per kg of body weight.

4) Make sure you get enough Zinc, which is the backbone of your DNA, and will help prevent DNA damage to your cells. Zinc is essential for protein synthesis this includes your digestive enzymes to make sure you get the most of your food. You typically need about 9.5mg/day as a female, minimum.

5) Make sure you get enough essential fatty acids. I recommend getting 2000-3000mg/day of omega 3 and 2500-4000mg of omega 6.

6) Make sure you learn about the ripening of fruits. Many people eat fruit before it is ripe and come against problems, however for the most part, people will learn from their mistakes and it will help better inform them of how ripe their fruit really is. For example, Bananas should have lots of brown spots on them. Mangoes should be soft and juicy and sweet, but not so soft that they taste alcoholic smelling/tasting.

Make sure you get enough greens in your diet! Romaine lettuce is a great source of minerals, vitamins, amino acids (ie. protein) and fats (omega 3/6). celery is a great source of organic sodium.

Make sure you get enough fruit for your carbs. This will be the main staple of your diet once you remove cooked starches like potatoes and grains like wheat, oats etc. Lots and lots of yummy fruit.

Nuts and seeds can make a good supplement to your diet, but you should never eat more than a handful at a time. If you find yourself wanting too much fat, either in the form of nuts/seeds or fatty fruits like avocadoes, its very likely you either didnt eat enough fruit for calories, or didnt eat enough greens, like celery and romaine lettuce. for protein, fats and minerals. :o)

Make sure you get enough sleep and plenty of exercise and sunlight.

If you would like any help planning a diet, please let me know. :o)

Take care

I was at a red light. Same thing also happened to me when Rudy Guiliani crossed in front of my car. Hitting the gas did occur to me for a second or two.
