Give it to me Raw

I had no idea what to title this discussion hence the cheesy title. I have been on several gluten free diets over the past 4 - 5 years. I have to say that each of them had their benefits until I discovered raw food.

I have been taking wheat, then corn, then potatoes out. I took out this and that and pretty soon I stepped into that space where elimitation dieters find themselves. What am I going to eat?

Lisha discovered the SCD diet and the breaking the vicious cycle website. I was on that through all if its stages and it really did well. However, it was necessary for me to visit a doctor and I had surgery last year about this time.

So, imagine it. You have had about 4 years worth of changing diets seemingly making you a sleuth at food labels. Now you're recovering at a hospital where their understanding of gluten free is no bread.

I found myself wondering why hospitals are so industrial in their craft services. Anyways Lisha brought me SCD goodies from home. The nurses were as understanding and caring as they could be. It was just the food offerings that fell short.

So, that was last year. I continued to creep away from SCD forming my own diet for my own tastes. I took out red meat (elimination again). I was probably about 40 - 50% raw at that point.

Lisha again advised that I step it up and join her on the raw foods diet. At this point I was reluctant due to all of the eliminations, but it was all of those transitions that contributed to my bravery to get into raw foods.

It will shortly be my first 30 days on raw. I do have rice paper, but no wheat or corn. It's been a tremendous difference in my clarity, waking up in the morning, and responses to physical activity (walking, exercising, etc)

Also, I don't feel bloated. I don't feel weighted down. I do feel rawgasms. I haven't given up chocolate or nuts. I am using raw to gain weight/mass.

I don't feel sore anymore. I must have been eating inflammatory food. Pain doesn't exist on raw. So, my preliminary experience is a big thumbs up.

I'd like to hear others stories on how they were sprue/celiacs/IBD/chrone's/etc and why they are raw now.

Hey Jeremy,

Interesting story... and I'm glad you've found some success by eating raw!

I've never been officially diagnosed as celiac, even though I can't tolerate wheat (when I took the blood test for antibodies, I was already off gluten... which I later found out can cause a false negative. I'm not about to torture myself to get a positive reading on the test, though!). Gluten affects me more in the brain than anywhere else. I had extreme reactions when I came off of gluten; it was like a drug addict coming off of their drug of choice, and the withdrawal was awful.

I know what you mean about elimination. After going off of gluten (and casein) I was eating nothing but soy products, canned beans, white rice, and potatoes. I couldn't eat corn, and eventually rice started to cause problems. The funny thing is, when I eat raw food, I am able to eat all kinds of things, and my diet is way more inclusive than it was before. When I was eating gluten (and cooked food, for that matter) I couldn't even eat lettuce without getting a stomachache. Now, I eat it every day and I don't get that pain. There was probably some inflammatory response going on there.

The raw diet isn't perfect for me (I've lost too much weight), but it's better than any of the others I've tried (SCD, GFCF, etc.).

Hey - I am Gluten Intolerant, as is my mother. My hubby and I were eating a GF diet up until last year when we began to discover Raw foods. Dood! The beauty of eating RAW is NO gluten! YEAH! My story of discovering my health issues - and multiple autoimmune disorders - spans over a decade. Bottom line - don't accept what your doctor's tell you. My body has experienced a lot of healing thru the 80% raw eating. Now in 2008, we're going 100%!

This groupis a delightful find!!

I have been told by an emergency room doctor (after going to a gastroenterologist for many years) that I had celiac disease. I stopped eating wheat, and felt so much better, that I have never had the "official" test done, as I would have to eat wheat again. In addition to gluten, I cannot eat corn, dairy products, or meat to include fish, chicken, & other things. I was looking at David Rainoshek's juice feasting website, www.juicefeasting.com, and I thought, that would be good for me-looks gluten free. My body needs a lot of healing. Katrina said all the foods/supplements in the juice feasting plan are gluten free. I am pleased about that.

David recommended this website (Give it to me Raw) for juice feasting support, so here I am. I am on my 32nd day of modified juice feasting (detox symptoms are too strong for me to stay of the juice feast).

I am drinking only vegetable "juices" I prepare and to slow down detox symptoms, I am drinking blended fruit (by the vitamixer). I have decided not to eat salads or soups as that increases my desire to eat too much. Four days ago, I thought, since I had been on the modified juice for as long as I had been, I would have less detox symptoms. But today, I went back on the modified juice feast because I am a wimp. I could not stand the pain.

Eating only raw foods is a totally new concept for me-although I have been a vegetarian for several years and have also prepared "juices". I love the support the raw foodists give each other and I love the exchange of ideas (forums).

I am looking forward to reading about all of your experiences.
Blessings,
Khalah

Yes I also love that raw recipes are gluten-free! I have been vegetarian for 14 years, gluten-free for 11 years, vegan for 8 years, and raw for 2 weeks! It has been interesting this time to look back and see the changes I have made in my diet. It was SO hard for me to go gluten-free because I felt such a loss in my life. I have still felt that loss up until now. Going on raw foods has finally made me accept not eating wheat. I feel like I am finally not just replacing wheat with rice, but I am actually choosing the best possible food for myself. Same with soy and dairy. I was simply replacing soy for dairy. For all those years.

I have had chronic pain for 3 years in my back and it has put me on several medicines that are constipating. That is one reason why I wanted to eat more raw. Then, I had low energy and found out it was due to re-activated mono and low iron. I wanted to get more energy by eating raw. I get such a boost from smoothies and raw juices.

Now, I am totally hooked. I was going to do "more raw", then "one week of raw" now "raw until I feel like not being raw anymore". I take it day by day. But I am feeling better and I am finally taking my diet back into my own hands. It is empowering for me.

Hi Hilary. I am so glad you finally figured out what was making you sick. Yes I find being raw much easier to do than gluten-free only. well, and since i was vegan too finding recipes was tough.

i noticed you said you have an emotional relationship with food. i know what you mean. i was in mourning over losing wheat, bread, etc in my diet for a LONG time. I still hope you don't cheat because you will never get to feel like what feeling good is!

take care.

Thank you for sharing your story Jeremy! I know how you feel about that hospital food...yuck! And most medical doctors know nothing of nutrition unless they are holistic. I found that I must avoid gluten after suspecting that it was causing me to have MS symptoms and therefore took the ELISA test for food allergies. I also know how you feel when you say you felt you had nothing to eat after all the eliminations. I have a long list of foods that I have to avoid, so I felt the same way before going raw. But now that I'm a vegan raw foodist, I have more options now than I did eating cooked food (now I make my own bread that doesn't taste like gluten-free processed cardboard..hee hee!) and I feel much better! I've been 90% raw since August 13th and plan to step it up to about 97% by New Year's. I wish you much success with your new lifestyle change. By the way, I don't think the title is corny ;-)

It's very possible. 15+ years in the game, and you learn a lot, like how to reach your audience. You think he'll let me see his home in Hawaii?
