I'm very interested in the idea of zucchini hummus but haven't tried it yet because recipes I've seen include a cup of tahini and half a cup of olive oil for two zucchini and that's a LOT of fat. I'm on low-fat because I'm recovering from diabetes and have to clean the fat out of my cells to restore my insulin sensitivity so a cup and a half of pure fat is a way big no-no right now.

Do you know if zucchini hummus has to have all that fat in order to work? I was able to make chick pea hummus without added fat and it was really tasty when the chick peas were cooked. Pretty tasty with the raw, sprouted chickpeas but way hard on the stomach. So I'd love to try the zucchini hummus and may do some experimenting next Summer when zucchinis are cheap again to see if there's a way to make it without so much fat.

sparrowrose - I think the butter and oil are to help bulk up the hummus. Zucchini on their own have a MUCH higher water content than chickpeas, hense less of a need for fats/oils with those. HTH! :D

Any ideas on how to bulk up a zucchini hummus without oils?

I've figured out how to make veggie pates without seeds and nuts so I have a sense that anything is possible if I ask enough questions and experiment enough!

Hi, James. I've never used a kit, so I can't speak to which is the best. I just use a collection of regular hosuehold stuff: colanders, bowls, jars, etc. One place to get good information about how to sprout (and to order awesome sprouting seeds) is www.sproutpeople.com - even if you never order from them, read their site: it's very informative. And one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get started is your own mason jars plus the screw-on screen lids sold by sproutpeople.

My intention is to get into growing pretty much an indoor garden of baby greens. Not sure how far I can take it but what the heck. I starting off reading as much as I could. Trying things on my own. A friend invited us over to watch Michael who runs the greenhouse form Hippocrates Institute. Very informative DVD. I highly recommend it. Right now I'm sprouting wheatgrass, barleygrass and sunflower sprouts. Production is pretty good right now. I fun to share them with friends too. I recycle my plastic containers that had my organic baby greens which use to go into the recycling bin. Now I get a a few months of additional use out of them.. One container is enough to make about six oz. of wheatgrass juice. Growing it is getting easier as my skills are getting fine tuned. First thing I do is soak the seeds for about 8 hours or so. Rinse them out and put in the contain with about two inches of organic potting soil. I cover it with a non-bleach paper towel which I keep moist.. Keep them covered for about three days. When I see little green shoots I open it to the air. I water once a day and maybe mist it later in the evening. I water very lightly since I prefer not to have holes in the bottom of the containers. Ten or so days later. Boom. They're ready to squeeze the juice out. In the case of sunflowers sprouts I add them to my green smoothies and salads. They are so awesome. I pretty much put together my own system but www.wheatgrasskits.com has some good stuff. I'm impressed with their information and products and service. I been using their seeds which I just bought about 30 pounds the other day.

I'm Not sure why my sunflower sprouts have not been sprouting the way that they used to? usually I would soak them overnite then put a cheese cloth over them in a glass jar then when they sprout put them in some organic soil. I do not know if its the seeds or if the temperture in my house is not warm enough?

Hello,

Can anyone please give me some tips on sprouting. I tried to grow my own wheat grass this week, and it's starting to mold. I don't know what I did wrong.

Please help

hi sparrowrose....2tbl of flax meal w/ 4 tbl of water may work in place of oil. It works as an emulsifier and then you get the fiber and omega-3's.

If mold appears you probably put to much water and there was not good drainage in your trays. You can still use the wheat grass even if there is some mold on the bottom of the tray

I think this will be my last question on growing wheat grass....After I cut and juice the wheat grass...the grass keeps growing. Can I just keep cutting and regrowing in the same tray or should I toss it and start fresh after each tray is done.

Thanks Nichole
