heard about the dangers of india, a woman in the news today just came back with TB or something, im sure you should find plenty of delicious fruits and coconuts that have natural packages, stay hydrated, plenty of coconuts and even bottled water finish this before you eat not after or during, dont worry about greens you can go for months without you might come across something parasite free though like leaves off a tree after a rain there are some interesting tropical greens. appreciate the simplicity of delicious fruit monomeals tell us about the mango varieties and all
i have recently been to india as well. heres something i have posted to another friend who is also visiting india soon.
it was a little hard for me to stay raw in india, my major source of raw foods was from fresh fruits and juices, i strongly recommend taking your vitamix or other fav blender of yours, for your green smoothies (i regret not taking it with me). i felt really sick eating all the heavy Indian foods even if it was occasionally, so i started preparing steam cooked food and take it with me where ever i go. i hope these tips help you with your trip. do let me know if you have any other tips on staying raw in india. oh also there are fruit stalls almost every where in the place where i was, so i would just stop the car and drink as much juice as i can.
some best fruits sources are tons of coconuts, mosambi, pineapple, sugarcane and water melon. if you are going for a short trip try taking some dehydrated crackers with you, as well as larabars.
I'm heading to India too in a few weeks, so I've been thinking about this too. Right now I'm Juice Feasting and will continue to juice in India too. I spent the last couple of years in Auroville, near Pondicherry, and I've seen so many things around in India now, that I feel quite confident about staying high raw out there.....
Like Nimisha said, I think its a great idea to take a blender with you - if the Vitamix is too big to take, maybe you could manage a small personal blender, will help you do single smoothies, juices with the help of nut milk bag, nut milks, raw soups etc - and when you feel like spending time in the kitchen, you could also use it for making pates, pesto, dressings, sauces, deserts so on........
Fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available in India, just need to peel when you can and thoroughly wash them or soak them in simple bottled water and vinegar mixture, that will do the job.......so very easy to do all kinds of salads......
Depending on where you are heading to, there are organic health food shops too where you can stock up on all kinds of goodies, from nuts to seeds (flaxseed - which is called alsi in hindi and gujurati too, sunflower, pumpkin etc) to tahini, spirulina, almond butters, buckwheat groats, wheatgrass powders, flaxseed oil, etc......
Coconuts are a great food too, and very cheap.....
Then again like Nimisha said, you could always take some dehydrated crackers, bars, chips, etc with you, they won't last long but will be great when you are moving around......
It all depends on where you will be and what you are going to be doing, how much time and focus you can give to staying raw etc - then also, if you are not into 100% raw, you can always add a little steam cooked veggies or dals, on the side.....
Its not easy to cope with family and friends where food is concerned - my intention is to be able to say NO without struggle, with self-observation and sometimes to be able to say Yes too, without self judgement and with lots of compassion......
I hope you'll have a great time out there, I look forward to reading about your experience :-)
i was in beautiful kerala for 3 weeks in dec/jan and didnt stay even high-raw for most of it.
by 2 weeks into my holiday i felt awful - heavy, sluggish, overweight...
i was staying in homestays where they feed you, lots of times a day, home-cooked food that the women have made with great love and skill.
It is tricky to not eat without causing offence.
I never deal with lentils well (even the sprouted kind) and after a week, i just had to make a committment to stop eating any dahl or papads, or dishes/breads containing lentils, completely. Immediately this lifted my energy levels.
BUt the days i stuck to fruit only were the best and happiest and i FEASTED on fresh young coconuts (something we just dont get in the uk) that you can get anywhere... I love tropical fruits!
also the bananas are just like you will never taste; honey soft sun-ripe yellow flesh with paper thin skins...
I was too early for mango season, but did enjoy amazing fresh papaya juices.
fresh lime and ginger is pretty amazing too!
in my last week I was in a guest-house and able to take greater control of my food. i had fruit only during the daytimes, and every day I swam in the sea, did a yoga class and had an ayurvedic massage. I returned home feeling more like me... but it had been a struggle.
I was however glad to have tried the cooking because i came home inspired to try to re-create raw versions using the same combination of spices and vegetables with sprouted pulses.
(for a week after i became totally addicted to a successful raw version of 'thoran' using grated parsnip, plaintain and coconut, with mustard and cumin seeds.
was so sooo delicious and sweet! My Dad was totally taken and he is a SUKD indulgent foodie.
with regards to the water, i had a little bottle of grapefruitseed extract with me. i always put a few drops into my bottle of water each time i filled it up. It kept the water and my belly parasite and bacteria free. i believe. cos a friend of mine who travelled with me, drank the same water didn't use it and came back with giardia lambia! yuk.
I will also travelling to India shortly and would love to hear how you managed to stay raw in India. I'll be going during summer season so it will be great since there will be so much variety available for fresh fruits and veggies this time of year.
Where did you go and what did you find yourself doing to stay raw?
I'd love to hear how things go for all raw foodies who visit India. I was there years ago, before raw, and I felt that having pineapple juice is what kept me so healthy and strong while I was there. I didn't have any of the stomach/intestinal problems everyone always talks about. While drinking the pineapple juice, I intuitively felt like I was keeping myself healthy and clean. It was heavenly!
I'm looking forward to hearing how things go! The next time I go, I'll be taking lots of dried raw snacks and green powder with me.
I just came across this group- I recently left a similar post on the Raw in India Group message board. Do you mind sharing how your experience staying raw in India went?
not me neither, for one no tv here, two I remember the last time that dull show was on and boring as hell( and I heard it is just as bad as last one ). Plus I am with Barron, I watched enough of shapeshifting Bushes, Clintons, Gores, Gulianies, to...
I need a mango now more than ever.
This year has been the worst mango season I've ever seen :( Honey mangos were sad with light colored flesh that held little flavor...Kent mangos...don't even make me go there.
Last year was an AMAZING mango yea...
This was the one in the Santa Ynez Valley, which is near Santa Barbara. I did have a wonderful time! Met so many amazing people! I didn't volunteer though. I actually took a plane from Toronto by myself, but synchronistically met a lot of amazing ...
hey im just wondering if anyone has suggestions of names for a raw cafe. i plan on owning/starting up a cafe/restaurant in the future but i have no idea what would be a good name.

LOL- yes, I meant blood vessels. I must've been typing in a hurry;) The spleen (in Chinese medicine) holds things in their place, like blood in the vessels, and organs (keeps them from prolapsing). I wonder if you had a spleen issue back when the ...
I don't have TV anymore, but I used to love watching Biggest Loser while I was in the cardio section at the gym. Talk about motivation and inspiring people!!!! I love that show :)
