Give it to me Raw

Hiya. About a year ago I was experiencing some major It band pain during my runs. It was suggested that I be fitted for orthotics. I was skeptical, but the problem disappeared within a week. No kidding. Anyway, now the pain is back on my left side!
I think what I'm not doing is enough stretching, which I was doing for a while, before I got busy with work.
The drag is that I haven't been able to go with my partners on their marathon runs.

I tend to run 15-20 miles on the weekends and two, eight mile runs during the week.

This is, by the way, less of a discussion posting as it is a chance for me to whine and fish for sympathy.

Hi Zooey, I only just joined this group and am checking out the discussions, so sorry this is so late. Anyhoo...

I've been a runner for about six years. My first year of running was injury free. I joined a running club and about six months after, once I'd got all my new kit etc, I experienced my first 'overuse' injury. I've since had every brand of overuse injury - in the last episode, nursing tight IBs led to a broken ankle. Ouch.

Earlier this year, when going through the 'conditioning' stage after the injury, I red Christopher McDou(gall? onall? Mc Somat)'s book Born to Run. I am now running injury free for 8 months, the longest spell that I have experienced since before I followed all the expert advice regarding shoes... and I mean free of injury - no 'niggles', no tight hip flexors/ IBs, no slight inflammation of knee or ankle when I've done a long long run. If you have a long term running issue, I can highly recommend his book. His basic argument is that you are adapted for running, and it shouldn't cause you injury. 'Overuse' injuries are in fact 'misuse' injuries and you can learn to run without causing them. I'm seeing great results having read the book and followed the advice - it may be worth your time if your IB is a problem and your Othotics bill is also slightly painful.

Hope you are well and enjoying your runs,
Evie
