Cuba - A peek into our future?

Kudos to Joel for bringing this to my attention!

Summary:
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.

I'm a historic preservationist with a huge interest in sustainable design/eco-design especially utilizing straw bale technology to existing building sites. I'm curious how on earth would anyone get a job doing this or should I just do this as a side hobby?

This is an excellent video. It is so true but we won't respond to it as well. There will be riots here because of the huge economic gap and huge amount of homeless. It will be mayhem.

Pangaia raw permaculture community on the island of Hawaii is offering to share ownership with 4-6 other co-owners. Take a look at our luscious oasis at www.pangaia.cc or youtube "Fruit of the Land"...We really dont want to loose the place and have to sell it. It has been such an important place for thousands of people in their seaerh for the raw permacultural experience. Aloha, Olu

Thanks for the comments folks. Brad, I'd recommend you find someone that's doing it for a living and apprentice with them. You could also check out some courses on the topic and network from there. Or just start one job at a time and work from referrals . . . Yeah, I'm all about strawbale. A friend of mine did some on some property I worked on. I love the look and feel. Cozy, snug, natural, efficient . . .

RawTastic. You are right. And unfortunately, we don't have the nice growing climate that Cuba has . . .

Good luck Olucean!
