Cuba - A peek into our future?

Kudos to Joel for bringing this to my attention!

Summary:
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.

Raw permaculture is here at Pangaia on Hawaii. Welcome. Pangaia day coming up again soon... permaculture land tours, meals and evening concerts. Look at us at www. pangaia. cc or on youtube by the name "fruit of the land" Thank you for openning this group. I didnt realize that raw organic food wasnt already permaculture until I tried to go to a health food store. Ive come out empty handed the last five times. I have everything I need growing on the land...

Thank you and welcome to the group. Permaculture is definitely very vast and involved. Very cool. Will have fun looking through your site more.

Unfortunately, jet travel isn't sustainable *wink*. (for me at the moment financially anyway ;)

P.S. I like the quote on your website. Will repost here for the sake of those who may not have read it:

"Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order."

Thank you for the reminders. Alot of folks do come here on boat finding crewing positions on sailboats from California or Mexico. When first moved here I sought to fullfill all my dreams and decided that I should be able to find it all within a bicycling radius and did, Permaculture school and Watsu training... but then I took off on a plane after love...but even that was to be found there I discovered at last. I encourage you all to find the bliss and fullfillment in your zone as well

Now that would be fun. Sailboat right :)

Actually, I really want to do that. I'm thinking teleportation is more practical though :)

Yeah, I actually live on a bike myself. My car is in a different state (well, needing repair is a state too I guess). It's tricky though to grow all your food in a climate that is a zone 4-5. You have to do preserving which of course isn't all that ideal. Drying is the way to go as far as energy and raw go, but boy I miss the water content. I'm thinking we really have a lot to learn, or we just really weren't meant to live in non-tropics :)

I love practicing permaculture. The best thing I have ever done is stopping mowing the lawns. The wonderfull so called weeds are now my food supply and make me feels so alive.

Yeah, the weeds that popped up around my garden made me wish I had planted them in my beds instead of produce. They grew a lot easier and didn't go bitter. And in a smoothies, you can't tell the dif.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

I've just finished watching a fantastic doco called Establishing a food forest the permaculture way (2008) It is by Geoff Lawton. He runs a permaculture school in Australia. Basically you can create a bountiful food forest on ANY land including desert. Good watching highly recommended.
