Give it to me Raw

Hello,

I like to make raw flapjacks, so I go through a lot of oat groats. I was therefore slightly perturbed when Grassroots told me they have stopped using Damhead as a supplier, which is a bit pants as that is where my oat groats come from.

But then! Aha! Damhead have a website that you can order from. You can get all manner of lovely things, from fresh fruit and veg boxes delivered to your door, to organic face and body products and of course oat groats.

http://damhead.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&...

Hope this is helpful. I have ordered a ton (almost) of oat groats and will be happily eating flapjacks to my heart's content. Yumbo.

Hi Lucy - I get my oat groats from my local greengrocer, who vacuum packs small bags. He has to buy larger quantities from the wholesaler, but it lasts well in the vacuum bag, but can go rancid quickly if not used/sored in vacuum. Flapjacks are great - lemon peel is nice, cocoa nibs, dried cherries/strawberries, nuts - my mouth is watering ! Are you using Kate Woods recipe ?

We have been trying to decide between a few different organic farm suppliers and Damnhead look like one of the better ones. I fancied trying one who let you pick the exact fruit and veg you want in the form of an online tick box but the only ones I can find seem to work out more expensive?

Hey Gail
I used Grow wild for a while and they were excellent. I kept phoning them up to tell them what I did and didn't want depending on whether I was doing high greens or fruit or whatever. The quality and service was great. I think I paid about £12 a week for a small box? Must start it up again.

Hi Emma,

Yeah I think Grow Wild looked the best for that but also was a bit more expensive on some items? Will have a squiz again as sick of relying on stupormarkets and would much appreciate a lovely delivery to my door every week! On another topic..sure I read that some of you are getting coconuts from coconutty.com. I wouldn't mind joining in with you all on that!

Yeah a box is so much better than the supermarket although I do go on about how wonderful tesco's organic stock is but only if you go to silverburn (best ever tesco). I might start up grow wild again when i move house plus i'd like to get in to picking wild food over the summer.

Yeah we did do a box, I'd be up for getting one again. Will see if Lucy and Cat want to chip in. It took me about an hour to figure out how to open the damn things! Plus nearly lopped off my hand in the process :)

LOL...yeah, think I'd need to buy a much bigger knife for coconut opening! We do most of our shopping at Silverburn but have just found (since Kev decided to jump into Sainsbury's one day on the way home from work) that Sainsbury's are alot better on some organic things. For a start, the Rocket is WAY better quality and alway's in stock! There is much more in the bag too and they have been doing buy one get one half price on Rocket,Watercress and Spinach! Def worth a look! Their one down side are the bananas..they are tiny compared to Tesco. ;)

Oh wow I'll need to check that out - I love rocket. Need to scope my nearest Sainsburys - there used to be one at Shawlands but it shut down... boo :(

Yeah it's a bummer...Kev works in Edinburgh hence the stop at Sainsbury's one day on the way home. There is one next to the B&Q in Darnley. Not sure what organic stuff they stock though since it seems to depend on the size of the store for most supermarkets. Rocket has become my favourite green for using in smoothies at the mo! Must find more greens to rotate better..there is such little choice in shops. Would love to learn more about foraging wild greens!

Oooh rocket in smoothies is a bit intense for me just now although if I wasn't on a low fruit raw diet I'd probably bear it a bit better. My faves are spinach, kale, parsley and coriander. Tesco also do organic mixed leaves which I chuck in too for a bit of variety. I love lambs lettuce but have never found it organic...

I don't think sainsbury's home deliver do they? Mind you, I much prefer choosing the food myself, reaching waaaaay to the back for the freshest things!! :)

Not sure if sainsbury's do delivery? It is better picking yourself it you get the time. My last delivery from Tesco came with really old carrots which was a bummer as I'd bought the ones with the tops to use in Smoothies which were too wilted and dry by the time I got them! :( Off topic, How are you finding a low fruit diet and why did you choose to eat less of it?
Yeah I got some past the best avocadoes from tesco one time but I phoned up the customer service and they reimburse your card straight away which is quite good. Yeah definitely better to pick yourself though, comes back to using your senses to guide you I suppose.
Yes the low fruit thing has had it's challenges. I'm doing it because if I eat more than one piece of fruit I breakout in spots on the sides of my face, my jawline and forehead, pretty bummed about it. Hoping that after a few months and in the summer I can start experimenting with fruit again. I really only have berries and if I do it's in green smoothies to balance out the sugar. It's going ok though because I'm very much in to my green salads, smoothies and also curries and soups - they are my staples! Oh and booja booja and raw cake from cake magic :) yum!
Damhead are great, we visited them once and they have a lovely shop. Well worth a trip to buy some bulk goods.
