Give it to me Raw

I am wondering what is the best way to put on or keep on weight on a raw food diet. Prior to going raw about 3 - 4 weeks ago, I was at an average weight for my height (5' 7", 140 ilbs). Of course, eating raw, weight drops. I think this is great for people who are overweight and want to lose the extra pounds. I've seen the beautiful transformations of those who have.

For myself, although I didn't 'need' to lose weight (and now my clothes are hanging on me a bit), I do feel lighter and sleeker. It feels good. However, I am very recently experiencing feelings of doubt as a spin off to the weight loss. Even though it isn't extreme (but is noticeable), a few people have said: "You've lost weight ..." but there is sometimes a question or concern attached to that comment. (e.g. "Are you getting enough nutrition? Are you going to make yourself sick? etc.) Yesterday was the first time the 'you've lost weight' comment (the ultra-concerned-bordering-on-worried way in which it was said) made me doubt myself and the raw food diet. I began to wonder if I would continue to lose more weight and 'become sick' (as one person suggested) and if I really am getting enough of the nutrition needed. I being to wonder if I would have to eat cooked foods in order to keep some weight on me and 'be healthy' ... but the thought of doing that didn't appeal. Of course I know it is possible to be 100% raw and look and be healthy. After all, that's what it's all about and many people do it. Rather than run to cooked foods as a 'solution', I want to learn and understand how to keep eating raw and have the right fat and protein in my diet. I looked it up online but the main advice I'm getting is to eat nuts and avocados. But how many nuts and avocados can I eat?

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? What have you found works for you?

Thanks.

E.

I havent tried this because Im still at the "overweight level" but I have once heard that its normal to get really skinny and even a little bleek and tired looking till you have really gotten rid of the toxins in your body ,,then after that your weight normalizes and you start to look beautiful and healthy,,So you too have to get on the "other side " of the detox phase and because you are already slim you might just look a little underweight for a little while....as for slowing down the process stay raw !! but add more advocados and bananas and nut milk..
You might find that your "natural weight" once detoxed is a couple of kilos below what you previously thought..

Hey Elspeth..I have been raw going on 5 years and people are constantly telling me "your so thin, or your too skinny". (I dropped 30lbs in the beginning...went from a size 13 to a 3!!) .it gets a little old...but they are just not used to seeing folks silm and healthy....with raw food, there are those that with time can actually gain back some weight as their bodies adjust and get healthy...
One of my statements I make often when teaching is.."don't worrry about the weight, just get healthy and your body will get where it wants to be"...there are folks that have been all raw for 30 years and are thin but healhty..you are a small person to begin with so, it is expected for you to be on the thinner side...

couple tips for keeping up the weight besides avos (may favortie all time food!! ...) and nuts is your virgin oils, olive/coconut/sesame; hemp seeds in nut cheeses and smoothies have good protien (so does spirulina) which helps build muscles; and green/ blended drinks!! The Green Smoothie Book by Victoira Buretenko as a testimony from a man that was raw but could not gain weight til he began green smoothties!!

one other note...eating a small percentage of cooked veggies on occassion is not a terrible thing...check out www.hacares.com who promotes a 15% diet of whole veggies...
hope this helps...

Thanks, Kim. It's true - the body gets to where it wants to be.

This is a great question and I'm really glad you posted it. I'm trying to go mostly raw myself, taking small steps in to it, but about to take the plunge any day now. Weight loss is not my reason at all (I'm also 5'7 but I'm not sure how much I weigh since I never get on the scale anymore. I go by how my clothes fit, but average between 147 and 155 lbs.), but I have no doubt it will happen when I start to eat healthier than I ever have and have thought of how to deal with the questions of 'are you OK?'. Even when I started as a vegetarian at the beginning of this year but didn't lose weight, my friends were saying things like 'people who don't eat meat look all sickly and gross'. I just ignored it, but never had to deal with it first hand since I maintained my weight (compensating the meat with a LOT more dairy will do that).

I'm sure I'll probably say something like 'I've never felt better' or 'this is the weight I'm supposed to be', something along those lines. I'm sure our bodies will put us where we need to be as far as weight. I'm a bit curious of where that is for me since my thinnest was 119 when I was 20 years old. I'll admit, that was skinny for me, but I also was a bit depressed at the time and know it wasn't a healthy weight because I wasn't eating right at all. I'm going to do it right this time!

Good luck in your journey and I'll be joining you real soon!! :D

Right--it's good in smoothies too. It's a necessity when there's no fruit in there!

In water with a twist of lemon or lime, in teas, in water (with flavored stevia), and with millet or quinoa.

Hi Lizz, I haven't tried yacon; I think it's still too sweet, technically. I believe stevia is truly the only natural sweetener that is not a form of sugar. When I add vanilla flavor and a little coconut oil to the stevia, it's kind of like maple...
