Didn't see a diabetes raw food group so I created one :-). I'd love to meet any others out there living a Raw Food lifestyle and share experiences and stories.
Feel free to join, say hi and give an intro for yourself.
So to give a little about me, I'm Marston and I've been a Type-1 for 16 years. I'm also the founder of SugarStats.com, an online diabetes management website. I started that initially as a side project over 2 years ago but it has since grown like crazy into our full time business and passion. I've been taking insulin injects many times per day during this time and currently I'm on pens (NovoRapid and Levemir).
I've been 100% Raw for about 2 months and was about 50% Raw 3 months prior to that. My blood sugar has regulated more than I could have dreamed without a pump and my medication intake is down 60%. I've never felt so joyous, vibrant or had more energy in my life and it is nothing less than amazing.
Thats a basic overview and I'm sure I'll be meeting many of you as time goes on and sharing recipes, notes and experiences. Drop me a message any time.
Hi Marston A, I just wanted to echo what you're saying about raw foods. The healing powers of the body are supercharged when it's given what it needs. Many folks have been lulled into thinking that some big conglomerate like ConAgra, Nabisco, or Kraft knows about nutrition. HA!! I can't think of anything more ludicrous when compared to the facts. Our bodies were designed and optimized by Nature. To give them anything other than natural foods is pretty narrow minded. Unfortunately, we have been brainwashed by big foods, big pharma, doctors, nutritionists, and any number of "authorities", into believing that manufactured foods are "good" for us. Don't even get me started on milk. There's some pretty compelling evidence that milk actually causes diabetes.
Now, as for me.... I started going raw in Dec. 2007. By the 13th (lucky me), my blood sugar was down into the low eighties and upper 70s (I'm a type 2). So, I stopped taking the Metformin. Since then, my sugar has stabilized and my fasting numbers are usually between 70 and 100. My post prandial numbers rarely go over 120. This isn't rocket science, folks. Think about it... (for creationists) our bodies were designed by the Almighty to live off the land... or, (if you're a natural selection subscriber), we evolved around natural foods. When our bodies are deluged with refined carbs or farm raised saturated animal fats, our cell walls clog up with CRAP!. Once our bodies are purged of this unneeded garbage, the cell walls become more permeable and things begin to work as originally designed.
My name is Cheryl and I am new to this site. I am also type 2 and I wanted at ask you if you just stopped taking Metformin or did the doctor take you off the meds. I am a lover of cheese and anything creamy, and your post is very interesting on the milk theory. My voice has always been a little sultry, but over the past year at time I barely have a voice. I have been raw for 4 days and my voice has actually cleared up a little. Did you start out 100% and what’s your diet like? I am just trying to get some food ideas.
LOL.... I love the Mr. PReachy.... because that is exactly what I am. I've learned to not listen to doctors. You can learn more about type two diabetes in a few weeks than your typical M.D. More than any nutritionist, dietitian, or even an endocrinologist in just a few months. It's simply a matter of watching your blood glucose levels closely as you adjust your diet and exercise levels. The milk thing is hardly a theory. It's a proven fact. The human body is simply not designed to utilize cattle milk. No, I'm not 100%. Maybe 90 to 95%. The whole secret to controlling type two is keeping the fat off and giving the body the necessary nutrients for it to do it's job the way Nature intended. Hint: Nature did not intend for us to consume bear claws or Marie Callendar stuff. Get the idea? Our bodies were optimized for NATURAL FOODS. Not manufactured crap. The more we adhere to Nature's ways, the more likely we are to avoid the chronic diseases that plague modern society. I am very happy that you started this site. I have type 1 diabetes and was on the fast track to type 2 if I didn’t make some serious changes. I am a newbie and this is my 4th day of the raw experience. I see that you did 50-50 for 3 months before switched to 100%. What type of things did you eat on the 50-50?
I had a piece of baked fish and some raw veggies for lunch, now I feel like a trader. I’ve had a killer headache for the past couple of days and thought that I wasn’t eating enough
To accompany the meds. I also suffer from high blood pressure so I got nervous. Any tips on food would be helpful. I will check out your site as well.
Me too! That's almost exactly my story and the doctor told me full-blown diabetes is inevitable, that I can postpone it with diet and exercise but not completely stop the progression. I refuse to just believe that and give up. I saw the trailer for Raw for 30 Days (still need to see the whole movie) and decided to try the raw lifestyle.
Hello there all. I don't have diabetes myself but 2 of my 3 children do. They both have type 1 diabetes and are on insulin injections that i have to administer for them. They are 7 years old and 5 years old. They are on a high raw living life giving diet and i do the best that i can for them. They are on low doses of insulin depending on their food choices. I am greatly inspired by the work of Gabriel cousins, Dr david Jubb, Annie padden Jubb, Dr robert Young, David Wolfe and Nick Good. I would love to meet people with type 1 diabetes to exchange knowledge and information to help my kids in any way....
Much love to you all and may the bright light shine.kate.x.
Glad to see others with sugar imbalances on here. I'm just beginning my raw journey and am interested in learning how to eat raw with diabetes. Do we not eat as much fruit, etc?
I eat plenty of fruit... a banana in the morning, snack on apricots throughout mid morning, an apple at lunch, and as many tomatoes as I can stand throughout the rest of the day. I'd much rather get my calories from a fruit with it's fructose (requiring much less insulin), than from typical carbs like potatoes, flours, pastas, rice, corn, etc. There is far more nutrition available in an apple, for example, than from a potato with twice the calories. These nutrients are absolutely essential for a type two diabetic to keep their insulin resistance minimized.

Hello Marston and everyone
I've been 100% raw for more than 6 months now. I don't have diabetes but I'm doing my thesis on a related subject. Nutrition is not part of my research sadly, I became familiar with this amazing lifestyle only recently otherwise I would have dedicated my work on this subject. I am trying to shift it now to topics related more to diet. I would love to hear about your experience with this diet. I will try to keep you in touch with the current state of research about diabetes.
I have a question for ya'll. Okay. I did a 30-day juice fast and 100% raw foods for a couple months. I was able to stop my short and long term insulins as well as my oral med (metformin). My fastings got down into the 120's. Not perfect, but great for no meds.
My cravings for bread, sweets, cakes were gone. I could look at a hamburger or cake and be like, yuk, I don't want that. BUT I did want fruit. BADLY. So I re-started the metformin. Now I'm getting hair loss from the metformin as well as cravings for all things carbie. Now I don't even have to see it to want it, it just pops into my head - like, wow a fresh baked cinnamon roll would be really nice.
So now I have to decide - do I want to give up the fruit and stop the metformin...which will be REALLY hard because I think my body craves the nutrients from it. Or should I keep the metformin and tough out the all-carb cravings. Either way I'm going to be craving something. I can't make up my mind.
Any of you have any advice or tips? Have you been through the same thing?
ALSO, I started a Rawbetes community. And I'm getting a lot of newbies coming in from my DiabeticMommy community. They are starting slow and have tons of questions. Plus they have special conditions and medications they are on that need special consideration. I am more than happy providing a place for them, but I am by no means an expert or guru. If any of you would like to share wisdom, you are more than welcome to visit or join. The link to the community is on my blog: http://www.bjaysblog.blogspot.com
I am going to have an actual site up soon which will be connected to the community forum page.
Hi Lizz,
I haven't tried yacon; I think it's still too sweet, technically. I believe stevia is truly the only natural sweetener that is not a form of sugar. When I add vanilla flavor and a little coconut oil to the stevia, it's kind of like maple...
