Give it to me Raw

Hi, everybody. From May till a cold snap in October, I never wanted anything cooked. I was at least 90% raw and felt amazing. The last month that's all changed. All my instincts say "Soup!" "Chai!" "Chili!" But following your instincts is supposed to make you feel good, and I feel awful, even though I'm still eating about half raw. I want to be mostly raw year-round, but I get shivery-cold, my toes are so cold I'm wearing skiers' toe warmers, and I just don't know how to get through till next June without losing all the benefits I gained from being high-raw. I know the suggestions -- room-temp foods, herbal tea, wearing layers, eating more fat, doing exercise and deep breathing, and using warming spices (but I'm unclear on what those are: some people say cayenne is warming but Ayurveda says it causes the system to cool itself). I've come up with some of my own rules, i.e., not eating out where it's cold but rather coming home and warming up first. But I still want hot food and hot, creamy drinks. Well, part of me does. The better part of me wants to be raw. Help!

Hi Victoria,

I can relate to what you are going through. I live in a fairly mild climate but I have typically always gotten cold easily. I also am on a very severely small budget which forces me to bundle up in my home rather than turn up the heat. bbrrrrr~!! Top that off I have a young son to take care of and keep warm and healthy.
I like just sitting and holding a hot cup of tea or lemon water and I still drink a home made chai tea with just a touch of hemp or nut mylk for silky smoothness.
I can tell you that the more raw foods I eat the less I feel I have problems adjusting to temperatures in either hot or cold extremes. I also notice since I've upped my intake of maca and essential oils (omega's, and I take an extra Evening Primrose supplement) my body has been able to adjust much better to climate conditions.

Do what you feel is right for you but listen to your body. Perhaps eating high raw but still having tea? Whatever works best for you.
Here is some good information from chef Dan;

I hope any of this helps. At least know you are not alone. :)
Best of luck!
Namaste~

Thanks, Renee -- I appreciate your post. The quote from chef Dan didn't show up, though -- I'd love to see it. I'll add the maca and essential oils; thanks for that. Yes, chai-like drinks are pretty comfy. They're doing something at Quintessence called ginger latte: ginger juice and hot cashew milk. If I were rich, that would be my winter diet: three raw meals a day at Quintessence with ginger latte.

Following your instincts can be great in guiding yourself however, if you have lived 30 yrs and you've been on raw foods for 1yr your instincts are still going to be fairly corrupted by the 30 years of indoctrinated habits you've picked up or been trained in.

Cold fingers and toes can be a sign of poor circulation, if you have a juicer (best yield comes with non centrifugal) then try juicing ginger root and adding it to either warm or hot water to drink. I use use ginger and cayenne a lot especially in winter as the are both circulatory stimulants and therefore good, among other things, for boosting blood flow to the extremity's (fingers toes etc) Juiced ginger and lemon in hot water upon waking will not only help kick start digestion but also help warm you up, as will even a few minutes of cardio such as rebounding. Remember when we sleep our core temperate drops so upon waking we will always be that little bit colder and in need of warming up cardio, will raise the bodies temperature faster.

If eating cooked foods try to search out the easily digestible options, the easier it digests the more energy you will have as its less of a drain on your central nervous systems energy. Low residue foods like baked sweet potatoes will pass quickly through your body (quicker than many raw foods) they taste sweet warm and amazing and will provide many calories with most coming from carbohydrates.

Getting more calories from fat in winter will deplete how vibrant you feel as things like nuts and seeds tend to take quite a bit of energy to digest and so people (myself included) tend to feel sluggish and tired when consuming them. All fats are more energy demanding to break down, but avocados are said to be easier to digest due to being more like a fruit than a fat due to the higher water content (I've personally found myself less drained with avocados than with nuts and seeds, that and most store bought nuts tend to be cooked even when listed as raw).

A final point to note is most raw fooders male or female end up holding very little body fat after a while. It's great in the summer but in winter it leaves us with very little insulation and such such, whilst the more "rounded" members of the population can get away with t-shirts or coats, we need layers and insulation from external sources.

I hope you find that of some help, should you have any other queries I will answer and help if I can :)

Once you already have a cold, the best way to deal with it is to eat as little as possible and get as much rest and sleep as you can.

The best way to prevent a cold are to eat foods that are minimally toxic. That means eating mostly fruits and vegetables. Organic if possible. Raw. Fresh. What also helps is getting plenty of rest and sleep. As much as you need. And then all the...

I believe that the natural state of the body is health, and that it is always trying to get 'there'. This thread makes me think of "The Right Use of Will" series by Ceanne DeRohan. Anybody ever read any of those books? If you have, message me......
