Hooked?! (Like We Need Another Group!)

Ok I think it's funny all these groups we create. But what is the most important thing here?! Hooking up- Of course!! I would love to hear about people who have met other raw people through this site or other raw networking and have hooked up!!

Thanks for creating that discussion Ken! Yeah that's exactly what we need! The next thing is getting people together by linking them to - maybe this group-

What I have found is there is a lack of linking- like I was looking at an intentional community website. How can we get them linkedto us more effectively? I am sure there are a lot of opportunities through places like that. Then there is woof, facebook, couch surfing, etc. But to a certain degree these resources seem nebulous- either too big or random. How can we make things REAL like this?

I hope people will take this seriously and offer suggestions if they have them.

This kind of "hooking up" is really important!

I agree, a lot of the promise of interconnectedness of the internet, is blocked by its inclusiveness and excess of information and "broken links" oddly enough.

that is just my snobby opinion. heh

I am starting to think there are no raw vegans on this site. I assume everyone here is, but later find out they aren't but would like to be. I'd like to fly.

I had my first raw food class and pot luck that I personally hosted in 2 and half years, but most of the people I knew from the other pot luck or were already my closest friends or were invited by them. Not much raw networking on this island. I need to promote my events more to get more people to attend next time. Maybe I should post the event here.

I keep joining meetup groups and so many gatherings ask for money. The problem is because of my current financial situation I would be a lot happier if I just met a couple people to go do activities that cost very little to no money like going to the park and playing bad mitten or walking and hiking or drawing etc.

Yeah I wondered about that- why do they have to ask for money? I mean the name potluck is supposed to be people just getting together. There is a lady charging $20.00 here in Santa Fe if you don't bring food and $10.00 if you do.

If anyone hears of get togethers where they aren't charging that would be good to know.
Ken Comment by Ken on March 22, 2009 at 6:08pm
well, some meet ups actually cost money/effort to run. potlucks I think should be different. and I think lecture prices are ridiculous enough that I've pretty much never been to one. Generally things should be affordable, by donation only, but people should have to contribute SOMETHING. Help set up or break down etc.. its only good measure/support.

I'm thinking of starting some events in NYC, mostly exercise/yoga/meditation related. and outdoors. probably charge $3

One of the problems is that meetup.com is not a free site to use and can cost the organizer $70 per month to run. I just set up my own ning group for my local classes, potlucks, and nature walks. I charge a small fee for the class, but the potluck and walks are free for anyone to participate in.

Using the Ning platform my members can fill in their profile, add photos and videos, reply to and start discussions, chat and more. That's all I wanted and needed. I also post upcoming events and invite people from my ning group. It seems better than using evite so far. Much better.

Another problem is that the space used for gatherings may have a lease fee or rent on it and the organizer needs to recoop expenses or make a profit from the events. I have my events at a free location so I don't have to transfer the expenses onto the people attending. Some organizers sell products at their events, which can be a good thing for them and the guests.

Thanks rawtastic, ken and kiani. I didn't want it to come across as if I didn't want to contribute because even when the events are potlucks I bring generous amounts of food or I help out a little. Its just right now my hours are being cut and I can't afford to go to an event that costs $20. I'll keep in mind free events and ones that cost under $5. I'd love to meet other new raw foodists and make new friendships and have fun but it puts a dent on one's social life when money is an issue. I don't know. I'll try the ning platform and see where I get.
