Want to learn how to make Seed Bombs?

Caroline Kim takes us through the step-by-step process of making seed bombs that gardeners on the go drop into the soil of barren, forlorn spots. Start with organic earthworm castings. Then add clay soil. Mix dry.

Add wildflower seeds to the mixture of clay and earthworm castings.

Next, Caroline adds water and mixes together wildflower seeds, clay soil and earthworm castings into a mud pie-like consistency.

She scoops up little mounds of the mixture and rolls them into bombs, more like balls.

The seed bombs are left to dry for a day outside in a plastic container.

With the seed bombs stowed in her red bag, the stiletto-wearing Caroline takes off on her bike in search of vacant patches of public space. To plant the seed bombs, she digs holes with a trusty tool — the heel of her shoe. “Stilettos work really well,” she says, grinning.

You can do it too! Just follow these simple directions! :)

That's really awesome. I love that she used her heels to dig.

Wow, that's really cool. So the water doesn't prematurely set the seeds to sprouting?

Well good question. I've made extensive use of seed balls, it's the funnest thing, but I always planted them that day or the next day, when dry. I wonder if they would keep a bit longer though? Probably depends on the seed's germination time?

Right--it's good in smoothies too. It's a necessity when there's no fruit in there!

In water with a twist of lemon or lime, in teas, in water (with flavored stevia), and with millet or quinoa.

Hi Lizz, I haven't tried yacon; I think it's still too sweet, technically. I believe stevia is truly the only natural sweetener that is not a form of sugar. When I add vanilla flavor and a little coconut oil to the stevia, it's kind of like maple...
