Greentantra ECOSEXY tip #24 -Recycle Your Plastic
1. First and foremost, I recommend that we avoid buying plastics whenever possible since they are not recyclable in the same way that glass, metals, and fibers are. Those materials can be recycled over and over, theoretically staying out of the landfill forever. Plastics, at best, can be turned into only one other product, which must be landfilled at the end of its life. :O ( The plastics industry has put a lot of money into marketing plastics as an earth-friendly choice, but has backed away from actually using recycled plastics in their products, unlike the glass and metal industries. Wouldnt it be great if we could encourage the plastic industry to put some of their money into actually using our recycled plastics in their products!
2. When recycling, get to know the plastic numbering system.
3. If you are going to recycle plastic, make sure to rinse out and sort properly. The best recycler is a good sorter. :O) A factor that that complicates plastic recycling is that many different types of plastic are used in consumer packaging. Each plastic behaves differently when you try to recycle it, and some plastics can't be recycled at all. For these reasons, plastics must be sorted by type before manufacturers can use it again to make a new product. The plastics industry uses a numbering system to group plastic packaging into seven general categories. Of these seven, only #1 PET and #2 HDPE narrow-necked bottles are commonly collected and recycled into new material. (95% of the bottles in California are #1 or #2 narrow-necked.)
4. Contact the manufacturer if you are ever unsure of how to properly recycle a plastic item.
5. If you do not have a recycling program implemented, contact your local city hall to request to have one implemented.
6. Spread the word about the plastic numbering system and encourage others to reduce, reuse, and recycle!
7. Together we can all make a difference! :O)
To recycle or not to recycle?? Well by now, I think we know the obvious answer -- I like to recycle to make try leave our planet in better shape than it is today for our children. Thank you for helping us make all make a difference, together!
