Ayurveda & Ayurvedic Lifestyle:

Ayurveda, The 5 elements, Body Constitutions and Doshas

ALSO: HOW THIS WORKS WITH RAW... I shall post a more detailed article as soon as I can.

INTRODUCTION:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayurveda
(science of life)

In Sanskrit, the word Ayurveda[3] comprises the words āyus, meaning 'life' and veda, meaning 'science / knowledge

Vedas are the oldest source of knowledge. In fact althought Vedas are sometimes type-boxed into being the roots of Religion i.e. Namely 'Sanatana Dharma' so called 'Hindu' religion, when in fact Vedas are meant to teach "The Way of Life"

Ayurveda is the oldest known, documented & practised health and diet science (way of life) that still exists today.

When people in the Indian subcontinent had been using Turmeric and Neem in several dietary and medecinal ways on a daily basis for thousands of years, a couple of US Pharma majors wanted to "patent" these known used products - Until ofcourse Indian Government had to release documentation showing the roots

That is Ayurveda.

FUNDAMENTALS:

As per Ayurveda the body is made up of 5 elements -

Syllable - Sanskrit Name = Common Name / English Name

Bh - Bhoomi = Prithvi / Earth
Ag - Agni = Aag / Fire (The word ignite roots from Sanskrit)
Ga - Gagan = Aakash / Sky / Space / Ether
Va - Vayu = Air / Wind
Na - Neer = Jal / Pani / Water

An interesting tidbit is.. All the syllables make up BhAgGaVaNa = Bha-ga-va-n = God. :)

Getting back to point - As per Ayurveda each person is born with a certain Body Constitution based on the 5 elements and the variation of that gives the various types.

Each Body Constitution type comes with certain Doshas - i.e. Imbalances.

There are slight changes in the imbalances in the body based on weather and other external conditions, but the the KEY notion is to understand the NATURE OF IMBALANCE at ANY GIVEN POINT.

Hence, Ayurveda does not see things as DISEASES or ILNESSES but as IMBALANCES in the SYSTEM that EVENTUALLY MANIFEST as EXTERNAL SYMPTOMS that we identify as diseases.
( I am writing this verbatim from stuff I have read & heard so there might be some lack of accuracy)

How Allopathic science looks at symptoms and tries to cure the symptom, Ayurveda instead hones into the ROOT CAUSE of RESTORING BALANCE by taking care of the DOSHAS (IMBALANCES) so that the body heals.

There is also strong notion of how "Foods" & "Imbalances" affect EMOTIONAL states & well-being. Probably the only Health Science that has this documented TO THE DEPTH.
In short: Satvic, Rajsic, Tamsic (Look it up)

I am glad ... I live Ayurveda methodically since three years in being under the treatments and studying ... but LIVE_LIVE , I did always in an intuitve way... so it was not difficult to go into it ... on the contrary it was a catalysation ...

My Teachers_Doctors on this always say how they are sad because people - normally west , of course - are NOT able at all to grasp , decode , absorb the meanings ... they do not have the mental background to it and begin to do it mechanically ... to their bodies only , as some do the sacred Yoga ... or because they ae bored ...

Ayurveda requires a whole engagement ... in all the levels ... besides the background which is inborn . And then , cultivated .

The only thing that ' cuts ' certain things I need - sometimes only - is the lack money ... even in having a good salary ... because it is blocked by some Burocratic Issues ...

But thank you for this idea ... I hope it will not be banalized , profanized ... Ayurveda is sacred ...

Light ,

I am not an Ayurveda practitioner but I practice what Einstein said "Question everything".. I question it from deep inside me.

But, I'm learning more and more everyday from Ayurveda Books, Practitioners, Experts and will share what I find out.

Rest.. I share,, You try for yourself :)

Yes , I do understand ... I practice the philosophy of it . I do not cook , and never did , or so ever . But since three years , I do steam rice ... and eat oat meal , when I feel it is necessary to my Psyque ... under guidance ... once 100 % RAW to Vata is not constantly OK . Some ' healing periods ' are necessary ... and the results are super OK , as well ...

Thank you ... :)

hi stacey, I was doing Hatha Yoga, that involves asanas, prayanama, bandha and mudras. Apart from yoga we were taught Anatomy, Psychology, Philosophy etc., so that the students of this course could teach yoga and take it as a profession later.

I distinctly remember feeling the exact way. I had the Nesco dehydrator before, and it stunk (it didn't work well). LOL The Nesco dehydrator is made in a circular shape and it would take doubly long to dehydrate, and food was often very moist/chew...

I think the green is more "leafy" tasting (which I don't mind) but doesn't have the same long-lasting aftertase that the white does. I love the Wisdom of the Ancients green stevia liquid. I've finally made friends with stevia, LOL! I get it from V...
