Reetz

Yet another new beginner wanting to know if this stuff is ok on raw

Soooo, i'm only on my third day of doing the raw thang....and as much researching and youtubing and raw food sites studying....wanting to know if these foods are ok....

hummus (from supermarket)
Tank Juice Bar juices..
OKF brand, Aloe Vera Juice?
Tins of tuna?

Heck oh heck, i am seriously diggin Seaweed, and i've had hummus in that with avacado and alfaalfa sprouts, capsicum, etc... sooooo tasty. :)

hummus from super market - no (unless specified 100% raw ingredients)

tank juice bar - i don't know what tank juice bar is...but if it's not freshly squeezed, right there,in front of you...forget it.

aloe vera - anything bottled is almost always pasturized...check it. if it's pasturized or processed it's not raw.

tins of tuna - not raw...it's cooked. if you want to do raw meat. the meat better be fresh and very high quality to avoid perasites, other wise stick to raw veg (which includes raw - unpasturized organic dairy) or raw vegan (no animal/fish product what so ever)

i recommend getting some books:

sun food diet success system by david wolfe

raw food detox diet by natalie rose

the china study by t. colin cambell

of course the university of google is a great place to learn a ton for free!
don't forget to experiment with this diet and find what works for YOUR individual body.

much luck and health to you

none of that is raw... but you can use it in transition if desired -- if it helps you avoid other SAD food. (SAD = Standard AMERican Diet)

For transition foods, you should opt for something like a lara bar or something.... but fruit is always the best choice no matter what! =)

You NEED to buy the book 80/10/10 by Dr. Douglas Graham. It will totally change the way you think about food! It makes so much sense... its about our biological diet as a human species!!!!!! ITS SO WORTH THE MONEY, you can buy it from www.foodnsport.com

Hope this helps!

I agree that 80/10/10 is the ideal diet for humans but I also think it might be a little intense for someone just transitioning to raw. Definitely inform yourself about it but don't stress if it's too much for you now. Just going raw will make a HUUUUGGGEEEEEE improvement in your health. Good luck with everything! :)

80/10/10 was the first book I bought as a raw foodist and even though I didn't follow it completely when I first started, it gave me a goal and an idea about what I was thriving for... If you read 80/10/10 first, then you won't get too caught up in the "raw food craze" of high fat raw treats that people eat on a daily basis... (Again, fine in transition but if your goal is health, then the gourmet raw foods should be a bare minimum, you know?) But eating gourmet raw sometimes causes people to fall off the raw wagon because their bodies want FRUIT, but they give it fancy high fat nut dishes... you know?

I think every raw beginner should buy 80/10/10 no matter what... even if they don't decide to do raw foods in that way, it is the most informative raw food book I have read.

Good luck with everything, Reetz, and if you need anything or have questions, please comment me!

Sweet thanks guys...I will check out the 80/10/10 book, I read that somewhere else, but automatically assumed it only meant being 80% raw ,then 20% something else, where as although I'm transitioning, I really wanna head towards the 100% raw thing, to totally reep the full benefits of raw stuff. :)

SO far my transitioning foods are scroggin, although I think thats fine, sultanas, mixed fruit, and nuts, but just a handful on a daily basis I think i've read.... having hummus, but will have to check out the ingredients, to see if its raw stuff used.... and Lida Bars..which are Vegan. I know its only 3days...as of tonight....but even this morning was SO much easier to get up....so now i might ACTUALLY get up at 6am when i set my alarm to do a hour of exercise, rather than re-set it every.single.morning, for 730am, when i HAVE to get up. :)

I'm in New Zealand, but totally get what you mean by SAD Foods...yuck. But dont ya just hate the people who can eat that 24/7 and not gain a GRAM...grrr...although they must be pretty sick on the inside....

AND tank juice, yupyup, must be a go-er, cos they squeeze that juice right in front of ya, fruits and veges, and you can add shots of about 10 different things if you want..protein shots, guarana shots, wheatgrass shots....rocks my world. :)

You guys are legendary, i'm sure you'll find me on here alot, asking lots, and what not for the next lil while...i'll invest in the 80/10/10 book and let you know how im going.

and sorry, you'll find i bla bla bla on way longer than i actually have to....close to a novel each time, when i respond. ;) ;)

ta again

The hummus probably isn't raw unless you made it yourself or it's marketed as raw hummus, the garbanzos are usually cooked. Again though, it's probably fine as a transition food. You will learn so much through your raw transition. It's really an eye opener about where our food comes from and how it's prepared. Your juice bar sounds great! The protein and guarana shots are probably not raw but wheat grass is awesome!

Also on a bit of a side note, I think Badash Climber makes a good point. I'd advise you not to get caught up in the the raw food fad or be stressed out that to be a raw foodie you have to buy an expensive Excalibur Dehydrator (or any dehydrator for that matter), fancy super foods etc etc. It's all about SIMPLICITY and sprinkling in some fun gourmet stuff here and there if and when you feel like you need to. Good luck with everything!

Tank juice bar is ok if they are juicing the produce in front of you. I have seen them use bottled juice in their smoothies before. But most juicebars will do fresh juices.

Hummus no, the chickpeas are cooked to make hummus.

Tuna - I don't do any animal products but I'd stay away from anything tinned anyway.

Aloe Vera Juice from the health food store is probably ok, but the stuff from asian supermarkets often has sugar in it.

And seaweed, I love that too, but most nori sheets are toasted, I get a brand here called mitoku from commonsense organics in Wellington. They have raw nori on purewellbeing.com too.

You can always make a raw version of hummus if that's what you're loving. There are some soaked almond versions or some made from zucchini. I think the zucchini recipe is on the renegade health video blog.

Store bought items in packages are usually pasteurized, which applies heat to food at about 165 degrees (and higher) in order to prevent it from oxidising. Enzymes usually do not survive heat above 118 degrees for prolonged periods of time, and thus this becomes the temperature that separates "raw" from "cooked".

Fermented items do not have to be pasteurized when bottled (though some may be), but those that are truly raw will say it on the package. Kim-chi, sour-kraut, kombucha, rejuvelac, and some nut butters are truly raw when bought in the store.

Great questions!

Ian

Well we are not early man. Sitting on the computer typeing isn't natural. Not sure what being natural has to do with working out. Jumping rope at a moderate pace seems okay for someone out of shape or for a warm up. If you want it to be an effect...
