Give it to me Raw

Hi Everyone!
What supplements do you take on a daily basis? I see that many people on this site have great knowledge about supplements and raw lifestyle and I would appreciate any input from you.
I am one of those folks who thinks that unless I take a mega multivitamin daily, I won't get enough vitamins and minerals; yet, I realize that those are made in a lab, no matter what the company says. So, even those food-based multivitamins (like Mega Food, Synergy Multi, Dr. Holt, Garden of Life) are synthetic vitamins with added food stuff to them. Garden of Life came up now with "raw vitamins" but it's still synthetic stuff with added raw components. So, how do you get the OPTIMAL levels of all the vitamins and minerals? I don't believe you can get those levels by just eating raw organic produce.
I take green powders and other super foods like Maca, Hemp, Goji berries, Acai, sprouted flax and chia, Reservatrol, and herbs.
Thanks for sharing!

I have vitamin/ mineral deficiencies, so I take several seperate high absorption vitamins. Be careful of mulits though, most people have issues with reactions to them as they contain so many things. Also, a lot of the multis (that contain E) are toxic (the vitamin E in them that is)

chlorella, digestive enzymes and CoQ10 (ubiquinol)

Forgot to mention, I took a spectracell test to determine what I was lacking. Here are a few excerpts from the site...
Q: Is SpectraCell's MicroNutrient Testing different from other tests?
A: SpectraCell’s tests are more clinically useful than standard serum tests. Standard tests only measure static quantities of vitamins and minerals present in serum, primarily reflecting dietary intake. But, with our patented technology, we assess long-term intracellular requirements using each patient’s lymphocytes. Under a variety of nutrient depletion conditions, we measure the growth response of these cells to mitogenic stimulation. This determines functional intracellular deficiencies, which might not be detected by standard serum tests, and provides a powerful clinical assessment tool.

Q: What is a Functional (or Subclinical) Deficiency?

A: A functional deficiency encompasses any of the factors that reduce the efficacy of a nutrient. Thus, a given nutrient may be present, but it may not be properly activated, appropriately localized or have sufficient cofactors to function at a normal level of activity. No matter what the cause, the result will be a defect in the biochemical pathways that depend upon that nutrient for optimal function. A deficient or defective pathway may operate at a sub-optimal level for many months, or even years, before a clinical symptom becomes apparent.

Q: How do lymphocytes provide a nutritional history?

A: Most lymphocytes obtained by venipuncture are in a resting state in terms of cell division. Since they have a 4- to 6-month lifespan, the nutrient levels accumulated in these lymphocytes represent a history of an individual's nutrient status. This situation is analogous to using HbA1c measurements to approximate a diabetic person's glucose levels over the months preceding a test. Thus, lymphocytes provide a history rather than a snapshot of nutrient intake.

Resting lymphocytes can be stimulated by a lymphocyte-specific mitogen to undergo cell division and grow in culture. The degree of growth that the lymphocytes can maintain is directly related to the nutrients they have available. Thus, our MicroNutrient Testing provides a functional intracellular assessment of nutrient status accumulated in human lymphocytes over their resting lifespan.

I used to spend a huge amount on superfoods, green powders and such a few years ago thinking I needed it. I was also concerned with having deficiencies. I remember paying $60 a bottle for a month's supply of green powder, not to mention the other stuff. It got pretty expensive and I wasn't really seeing or feeling the benefits. So I stopped all supplements and decided to focus on eating the best fruits and vegetable produce I could find instead.

Haven't touched any supplements or superfoods in over 3 years. The only foods I focus on getting lots of are lots and lots of raw fruits and tender leafy greens. The best vitamins and minerals money can buy in their whole food form the way nature intended.

I feel and look the best I ever have.

How much on average in a month do you think you spend on maca, hemp, green powders, goji berries, acai etc...? If it's anything like what I was doing it's probably a lot. I'm glad I'm saving that money now.

Hi Cam,
Yes, I am spending quite a lot; on average about $100 a month.
I was especially obsessed with green powders: you know, all those fancy ones like Vitamineral Green, Synergy, E3Live, Green Vibrance, Boku, Field of Greens, Macro Greens, Amazing Grass, Greens Plus, even Yuvo. I am thinking about cutting down because of the cost and lack of good results!
Do you make fresh green juices daily, including wheat greass juice?

Hi Mary,

I used to juice years ago including wheatgrass but now I find that eating the whole food works better for me. I think juicing for a short period of time if you have digestive disorders and can't deal with the fiber of whole foods is ok. Otherwise why not eat the whole food.

No wheatgrass for me anymore. Can't stand the taste and don't like eating grass. I leave it for the cows who I think enjoy it more :)

I do eat a lot of celery and romaine lettuce though. They seem to give me lots of the minerals I need.
Sometimes I throw them in the blender with some fruit. Yum!

Hi Mary,

If you have a Trader Joe's near you the Green powder is $10.00 (their brand)... I get my Acai' and/or Gojii juice from puritan.com that comes out to about 13 bucks a month (I buy in Bulk and its the cheapest I've found) I swear by this stuff. I moved from the east coast to the west coast and started loosing my voice ALOT and I talk for a living so that wasn't an option. Due to the juice I have not been sick for three years AT ALL.

Something I need to look into since learning about different vitamins is to stay away from Synthetic vitamins. It actually stop absorption in your body - a huge negative effect.

One of the quickest ways to get your body to an Alkaline State where Disease and Sickness do not live is Healthy water which doesn't come easy! I just found a cheaper way to raise your (already filtered) water to a PH of 7.4 by adding baking soda. Cheap Cheap Cheap!

AVOID Arm and Hammer (ANY PROCTOR AND GAMBLE PRODUCTS) due to horrible animal testing on their skin and go for the store brand. This web page above gives you all this and more to read up on!

We still harvest our own wheatgrass but I think you get the same benefits from healthy water. We use the Litmus paper urine test we get from the pharmacy to make sure we are living an Alkaline life. No prescription needed but you may have to ask for the strips from the pharmacy. If you get the strips cut them in half to make them last twice as long - another money saver :-)

I take alot of vitamins but I'm not at home with them infront of me ... but what I did share is a huge part of my state of health! I take a multivitamin, calcium w/ magnezium and D, niacin and biotin for skin and hair (Dr. OZ suggestion) 1000 mg Vitamin C , extra magnezium, 400 E ... thats all I can remember off the cuff.

I am about to start using coconut oil for my skin... and if you have a gym membership an awesome detox is the sauna for 20 to 30 minutes a day!

Blessings love and light,

Wendy

I haven't taken any supplements in several months. I'm living on 100% fruit'n'greens, and feel and look amazing. My athletic performance is through the roof, I feel musically inspired, and excited to be alive. I'm also saving hundreds of dollars on nasty smelling powders that I can spend on delicious juicy fruit instead!
