And does anyone know what questions one might actually ask themselves to find out what their "spirit animal" might be, in accordance with the original tradition (which I believe is Native American in origin) of this concept?
Mine is a red fox. I always laugh about this because I am a cat person. My fiance, who does not know that my spirit animal is the red fox, always calls me his "clever fox" or his "wiley vixen". I always think that's funny.
I went through a series of exercises with a shaman to discover it over the course of several weeks, at which point I started seeing red foxes everywhere...confirmation, I think. One used to sit in our back yard and watch me on the computer.
I also have strong associations with peregrine falcons.
As to how I found that out--sweat lodging, lots of sage, vision-questing, and again, confirmation because after I did so, red foxes turned up everywhere I looked for a while.
Wow... Here are some pics for you, Alicia! We spotted this wild red fox while driving through Nova Scotia a few years back. He was so cool looking, I just had to stop and take his picture. About a week ago, I thought of him and set the top one as my computer wallpaper. So, here's the fox looking right at us:
...and here's him walking away:
I'd considered whether he could be my spirit animal, too. But, I've always felt particularly fascinated by crows -- huge black crows / ravens, etc. Maybe he is some sort of important totem animal for me, though.

I have journeys with many animals, but the dolphin and coyote, and .... it's funny, just while I was typing this, a spider appeared right in my hair! A tiny little one. 8 legged creatures (or tentacled) like spiders or octopus have been near me as well recently. I don't *know* my spirit animals or walk with them with the same depth as many others... but I'd like to get closer.
i had a similar experience a few years ago when i tripped mushrooms and had a vision of a dragon in my third eye-it was very intense. i've also been told that i have lion, flamingo, and dolphin. i used to get really into that stuff, but not anymore, though, i remembering loving to guess other people's spirit animals.

I'm not sure, but I often see crows. Crows are sentinels- they give us a heads up about things to watch out for. They often warn other animals of danger.
