Give it to me Raw

Last week, I spent 4 days suffering from the flu. It might not seem terribly newsworthy to most, but it completely shocked me as I am naturally very robust and get sick VERY rarely (years).

In fact, my whole family (who are generally as robust as me) were sick, and it taught me some really valuable lessons for which I am very grateful.

1) I learned what it might be like to walk a few paces in the shoes of someone who lives with sickness on a regular basis, and how I must practice the art of understanding and empathy a little more.

2) I got a huge whallop of appreciation for the great health I enjoy most of the rest of the time.

3) I've developed an even greater sense of appreciation for the vast knowledge my body has to know what it requires to heal itself.

and... I lost weight (not the best way at all, but we have to find the good in all things), now no more weight loss please!

Does anyone else find they learn lots from episodes of vulnerability?

I am grateful for my sickness.

I am also grateful for the months/years on and off I spent in hospital growing up, because I'm sure through that is what's formed my passion and compassion towards people with sickness, now that I'm older. It's what breaks my heart, and because I've been through medical stuff myself I can understand so much more than someone who hasn't suffered medically. So through the struggles comes the understanding and compassion, and connecting with people on a deeper level who are/have done sufferering as well.
This could be the same for people who have gone through divorce, and can now sympathise with others who have been through the same thing, or a loss of a loved one, etc etc.

So yea, totally agree with learning and gaining through espisodes of vulnerability. :)

Glad ta hear your over your cold :)

Oh it was the flu, nasty with fever and bone ache and everything!

We are currently the swine flu capital of the world here and some really nasty variants of the normal flu have popped up and hit the very healthy. Half my work was away when I returned to work, and I still have this weird rattling in my lungs, it's disturbing!

I too was sick as a kid (though only in a short stint). I think being sick as a kid really impacts on our eventual personality, usually in a good way, we get some patience and learn stuff while sitting in a hospital bed eh?

Yes, we got sick several weeks ago too. I am grateful because it reminds me of what I need to be doing/eating/etc.

it was this awful chest thing where it sounds like you have a gallon of gunky fluid in there. It got in my head too, like a cold, but after the chest stuff. It was truly awful, and I also wondered what the swine flu symptoms are. If they try to force vaccinations I'll just say we already had it. :) This stuff lasted over a week, and I haven't been really sick for a couple years. The kids had it too, and the healthiest one of them had it the worst. MAde me wonder...

I am grateful for the reminder...sometimes I forget why I'm on this path, and get way off.

Ah the southern hemishpere winter bugs! Warning, warning, mutating swine flu!
Sydney is the whooping cough epicenter of the world, I saw one US travel website recommending people get vaccinated before travelling to Sydney. Melbourne seems to be the swine flu capital.
Glad to hear half of your work was actually staying home - it's the silly ones that go into work regardless of how ill they are that are the biggest carriers of whatever..

I have a wonderful, close friend and we like to go out and talk over dinner, just the two of us, as they say. He can handle drinking. Last time, I had one 16-oz organic beer and I was hung over all the next day till 7pm. I see why they call it ...

Angus, It may seem like a piddling point, but I think it's important that we don't call theories "laws". And thanks for the clarification on this one. ----tele
