Give it to me Raw

GI2MR Weekly Theme 2: November 4th

Raw Food not only changes your relationship with health - it also changes your relationship with money. Raw Food and holistic education starts to make you really present to where your dollars are going and what impact they have on people + the planet.

Question: What don't you spend money on now that you use to? How have your dollars shifted since embarking on your health journey? What business do you support and not support?

Specific examples would be fantastic! We want to learn from your experiences.

This topic was inspired by a post I recently wrote titled Everyday is Voting Day.

I no longer spend money at local liquor stores buying candy. I no longer shop at walmart. Read the Walmart Effect. I no longer buy any fast food. And I support local health food shops like Mothers, Trader Joe's etc. What a blessing! I'm buying and reading more books as well as supporting the local library.

I do not even go to the different isles in the store - except fresh fruits, veggies and bulk food.

I shop more often to the local farmer's market and make sure i buy local food, i support small companies, private family business and artisans for things other than food. I buy cheaper clothing and more simple things, brands do not matter much for me - comfort, natural fibers are what i look for - sometimes things are not cheaper but feel right.
My relationship with money did not change much but i allocate my funds differently.

No cable TV. No fast food. Much less clothing and I'm more aware of where clothing is coming from. Less furniture. Still driving an old car rather than replacing it. Very little plastic items. No nail polish. No cheap jewelry and basically nothing that is likely to break after a few minutes! No CD's in plastic cases. I've bought a few with a paper cover but typically MP3 rules! I plan on getting a Kindle soon which will also cut down on paper books.

A lot has really changed. To give you one example:

I used to buy the cheapest food at the closest store. Now I only buy organic from an organic store that ensures that no products have been shipped by air freight.

Boy, that would be a pretty long list - LOL!, like many people here! Way before going raw, my husband and I have been on a life simplification path, like for the last 20 years or so! I would say that since going raw nearly a year ago, I spend way less money on commercial skin care(which wasn't extensive to begin with). My whole being has gotten sensitized and gotten the message to simplify so that I only use natural things now, like shea butter and coconut oil. No cosmetic dermatology, even at my relatively advanced age of 61. Needless to say, my purchases of packaged foods are nil, and I don't spend much on beauty treatments either. My one splurge is getting a decent hair cut for my naturally-curly hair twice per year, maybe(letting it grow, as I had it short for so long). I don't buy magazines or subscribe much either. I do have a sub to Vibrance(was the Living Nutrition magazine). Fashion mags have dropped off the map, although I'll look at some at Borders or something since I do still enjoy stylish stuff. But I tend to wear comfortable natural clothing anyway which is a bit outside of the fashion world, and I like to define my OWN look, not what someone else thinks I ought to look like(which for mature women tends to be deadly dull and generic, IMO). Mostly I spend my money on food, a few supplements, a few supplies for natural skin and hair care, and some second-hand clothes(I still look for quality though even there). I've gotten increasingly discriminating about what and how much I buy, and people are amazed that I can be happy buying so little! When I was first starting with raw I was spending more money on food, but over the last year, my diet has gotten simpler and I don't have to eat as much to be satisfied, a good thing!
I don't spend on entertainment either - my husband gets freebies almost every week off of the cool college radio station here to go to hear music which I enjoy doing.
I would say that pretty much I don't buy into most consumerist stuff, and am perfectly happy outside of that whole racket.

No more health insurance, life insurance, drugs - alcohol, tobacco, caffiene
Done with it all, now I'm free from it.

Thanks for raising this issue. It was very positive to reflect on this - especially since as a recent raw food transformer, I sometimes feel like I'm spending more money than before, on fruit 'n' veg, books, superfoods, supplements, etc.

In fact, I'm not spending more money. Sitting down and running the numbers on how much I used to spend on alcohol and eating out, there NO way I'm spending as much. A raw food lifestyle has rendered these things unsuitable and downright undesirable now.

In addition, I'm making what I feel to be better choices about how I spend my money. Like other folks, I'd say organic body products, less detergents (soap pods for washing clothes are a wonder!), and more money into the hands of farmers at the co-op are better destinations for money that is spent on the same categories of products I bought before going raw.

I dont spend money anymore on....
mineral- and vitamin-additives, much less herbal teas, I dont need them I feel good.
I changed my washing powders, just organic now,
Less water, cause i got liquid from fresh food.
No nail hardener anymore, it just grows hard.
And I have a new cleaner: water, lemonjuice, olive oil, little bit of salt.....makes your appartement tasty...
Less electricity......i dont cook anymore.....
No self-help books anymore, the last one bout raw food apparently helped....
I support PETA financial every month, and offered - to be a PETA-activist with uncooking for PETA-activities
I support my greengrocers.
I support some sanjasins, by buying raw pralines from them.
I not only threw out the food I can hoard, I threw out a lot of things that I was hoarding - in my body on my hips, - In my appartement everywhere, - in my life people that polluted me emotionally, - in my mind the thoughts that made a negative manifestation spiral.
I guess there´s a lot more I´ve forgotten, cause it doesnt fit into my life anymore and I dont even think about it anymore.
Thank you GI2MR for your inspirations

I have learned to hold out for the good stuff, which is nutrition for me. I keep my needs simple and if there is $$ left, I stock up on raw products. So I guess you could say that I support the health food stores and organic products.
But I also share, surprising family and friends and paying for someone who is next in line at the store! YA! I luv to help make people's day! What a kick!
What I don't spend $$ on is when I'm about to buy something or lQQking for some specific and someone is pushy or has a biggger-than-thou attitude, or can't be bothered, I walk right out! I know I'll find it, I lQQk at it as a treasure hunt!
I also have a medical condition that needs medication, but w/ the help of my doc', I'm weaning off them as my raw journey marches on!
; )

hi everybody nice to meet you all.i buy soap nuts which can clean everything from clothes to hair to home. i am aware of wasting electricity. i look at peoples baskets in shops and notice now that its more than 90% rubbish and i feel great sadness for their children.i have always eaten a fairly good diet i thought but nothing like i do since becoming 95% raw almost 5 months ago.we care for two grandsons 10 and 6 and they benefit , the 6 yrs old will not touch any meat since he saw the peta videos.we drank diet drinks until i read about aspartame and now we only drink the filtered water and fresh juices.every time we go to put our hands in our pockets we think " what fresh food would that buy and do we really need it? " i used to buy loads of cartons of so called fresh squeezed juices until i learned the enzymes were dead. my whole way of looking at things has changed and although i have been bed and wheelchair bound for around 10 years i know i can get better.

This is a great thread. I have grown increasingly aware of my monetary karma, if you will, in the last year. I'm proud to no longer spend money on Shampoo/Conditioner (I use baking soda/vinegar), tampons (Diva Cup!), processed food of any kind (meaning no money going to large food corporations), make-up, perfumes, restaurants/going out to eat. I'm sure there's more, but that's a good start :)

is the no poo thing doing your hair better? am constantly curious as i see more and more raw divas turning away from shampoo. i use herbal powder mixes(amla, shikakai, etc.). so no chemical shampoos really!
how do you use the vinegar/baking soda connoction? might as well use an alternative!

Thank you Wrenn that is what I thought too and your comments are very helpful! I think it would also be cool at $.99 for 5 TOTALLY new raw recipes and then it can be a series of them at $.99 each...thanks for your comment!
